Liow: Doctor, specialist fees to be revised up by 14%

KUALA LUMPUR: Doctor and specialist fees in the private sector are likely to see a 14% increase if approved by the Cabinet, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the ministry carries out the revision every five years. It is now finalising the dental fees before a new structure is presented to the Cabinet for approval.

“We hope to bring it to the Cabinet this year,” he said after the ANOC Neuroscience and Orthopaedic Centre launch.

Liow said the fees were revised to make them competitive as the fees here were low compared with other parts of the world due to Government controls.

He said currently, the main complaints were not on doctors' fees but the exorbitant hospital fees which the Ministry was working on resolving with the private hospitals, insurance and managed care organisations

You have been conned la TS.

Just to let you know, if I have flu, fever, sore troat, running nose, I won't even go see doctor because is useless. These are nothing to me. After 1-2 weeks should be fully recovered.

I can easily get these medicine for free if I just ask someone to get.

The medicines you got plus consultation the most also RM50. Not more than that.

You just need to drink more water, honey + lemon, barly and rest. Cough just take lozenges la.

Don't listen to the doctor saying each capsule cost RM5 each.. It's a lie. Each cost maybe RM0.50 - RM1.

If you can claim is ok, if you can't then...

QUOTE(drpaulchan @ Feb 24 2012, 04:34 PM)
Anybody that feels that the charges by either hospital or klinik in the private side can forward their complains directly to the MOH.

If really the doctor is overcharging the MOH can do something about it. However bear in mind the following

1. MOH/KKM regulates ONLY professional fees (that is doctors charges)
2. So if the doctor charges too high on medication, we can only forward the complain to the consumers side of the ministry to give them warning letter
3. Only fees problems are handle by me. But if you're unhappy about services or you feel that the doctor is unethical, you can also email directly to me so I can forward it to the correct  department for action.
4. If you are the complainant, the rules and regulations 'says' that you need to meet up the doctor for 'grievance procedure'. so if you want to complain but remains anonymous, it is much more difficult to take action, since part of the investigation of the complains will 'dig out' your case files. However, all investigation will be strictly confidential between MOH/complainant/premise.
5. If you can, provide evidence bout the alleged doctor. for example, if you feel that you're overchaged, asked the doctor to give you itemised bill. It is by law that they have to. If they don't want, then it's MMC that will take action.

hope this help

The price of each capsules is cheap because I spoken to this doctor telling him to prescribe me some medicine. Outside selling damn blardee expensive. Some even cost RM50 - RM100 each. They mark up way too high to consumer.

He gave me this medicine from Aussie cost RM1 each. Same effect and quality. And those medicines at pharmacy all gimmick one la. All for show only to make you scared.

The Antibiotic Cedax is an original medication that are quite expensive since it's a 3rd generation Cephalosporin. I don't know the actual price but you can try to ask in some pharmacy. The rest are cheap medication.

It's better you work out how much you can bought these medication outside and add doctor's consultation fee and MC's price before decide if it is overcharge or not.

Be careful when taking strong antibiotics, it creates immunity to your sickness in future. You might get well fast but next time if you're struck again it won't be easy to get well fast and might become worst.

The best? It depends on the bacterial susceptibility. I do believe it is one of the strongest available antibiotic available orally.
The key is how much is one tablet Cedax 400mg cost? It may cost more than half of your RM 238 medication fee.

2010 chinese new year,

my brother said his heart was beating very fast, and he experienced cold sweat.

he should be experiencing heart attack. then my dad and sis brought him to some government hospital. i am not sure which one.

tested all, no result.

one week later he went to play futsal with his colleagues. from his last sms from his phone, he thinks he is sick so need to exercise.

so he went to play futsal and felt tired, and rest on the bench, then he bye bye already.

his friends brought him to clinic nearby, the doctor say die already.

then bring him to assunta hospital to certify death. i was not there, i was at kampar.

the post mortem came back like 3 months later. saying his organs all were imflammed.

my mum and dad was devastated, saying we should have been to specialist instead.

Yes, you can do that actually. Just keep on complaining to the nurse about the high price and eventually the doc will drop it. It works.

Has this got anything to do with the 14% private doctor fee hike thread I created a few days ago?

Are you a 1Healthcare or health insurance policy holder?

You wrong. Dokter also get very lucrative commision on selling drugs. Got at least like >30% profit margin + further incentives by medical rep for helping to push the drug if sales is good.
So consultation fee is free money for him.

Even if the doctor don't charge you his consultancy fees, his ubat sale alone already allow him to make lots money.

That's why some doctors push expensive drugs kaw kaw and he will tell you he will not charge you consultancy fees to make you think he's very honest and generous to you.
Actually money is already made by the sale of the medicine alone.

Excerpt -

In situations of overcharging, the clients may appeal to the authorities in the hospital where the doctor is working, or lodge an official complaint with the MMA Ethics Committee or the Malaysian Medical Council. Overcharging, when confirmed by these bodies, after due inquiry, may be considered an ethical matter and appropriate action taken against the doctor.

If you feel you have been overcharged, you can report.

TS, why did you go to the clinic?

that is a very famous clinic. the doctor is very good. last time i see 3 different doctors before going to see her and the spots i had on my skin went away in just 2 days after her treatment, despite being around previously for 2 weeks with no signs of subsiding. if you not happy with her price, please go to other clinics, there are many clinics in that area. simple things no need to go see her. she is hardly panel because she don't need that to get customers. everyone that knows that clinic knows she is not cheap, but people still go to her.

Why did I go to the clinic? Well captain obvious, I am sick.

I am not local, I just go there because I think the clinic looks old and still can be there, I would have thought, hey, maybe this clinic is like my good old hometown clinic. Which I was proven wrong. And it's near my house.

And from all the feedback I've got here, I do not think his price is reasonable. And I definitely will not go back to that clinic anymore.

kamon laa..common cold need no antibiotic..tonsilitis also doctor shouldnt give 3rd generation cephalosporin for ? viral tonsilitis? all money masuk longkanglah virus gelak je dgn cefipime pown
bagi amox atau paling kuat awal2 cephalexin seems fairlah

Malaysian mentality -sikit2 nak antibiotik..bapak aku dokter dari kecik aku demam tiap2 bulan pun aku tak amek antibiotik..3-5 days settle..skang aku dokter kerajaan antibiotik free pun aku x amek..

200+ for tonsilitis is simply atrocious..go report MMA

pehal bagus sangat dokter tu pon tonsilitis bukak mulut suluh je.. bukannye dia ada mata bionik scan culture+sensitivity terus tau bagi ubat pe.

This is very true confession. 1st time already whack you with powerful antibiotic for such minor sickness when you can still post in forum.

It's not going to be good for the patient in a long run because this will just spoil your immunity towards antobiotics treatment from now on. The next subsequent time you get sick it'll just get worser.

A good doctor will try to avoid strong antibiotic treatment for you unless necessary, but in our case a tonsilitis infection is compulsory.

In future try to avoid strong antibiotics if possible but the only thig you need to bare with is slower recovery. If you can build up your immunity without antibiotics, you'll slowly get less sick this bad after that.

fyi, everybody who is saying all the medications are generic dunno wat they talking about. cedax is original antibiotics and one of the most "powerful" ones available (normal antibiotics u hv to take it twice a day, cedax is only once a day, rite?). and it's expensive.

worked at a clinic before. cedax isn't normally stocked by most pharmacies cause it's too expensive for them to give to any tom, d*** or harry.

about msian drs giving too much antibiotics... i also dowan to comment. we as med students are taught not to prescribe antibiotics too much to prevent resistant bacteria... not because our bodies get used to the antibiotics.

(but if ur dr suspected u have bacterial tonsilitis, memang patut shud give antibiotics. dun listen to ppl here saying it's not bacterial, bla bla bla... nobody here hv seen u or ur throat to say wat is it. otherwise ppl all just hv online consultation. no nid see dr at all)

I don't know the patient volume for clinic TS went. Maybe it was that kind of doctor which tries to make 1 off consultations with customers type. See 1 time never to return that type.
So 1st and last time whack with high bill charges.

iye la medical student..aku tak cakap murah..dah aku mention 3rd gen cephalosporin td kan..
giving antibiotic is fair since the dr the one who check n might be not practical to wait for swab c+s blabla

but tonsilitis can give amoxy / cephalosporin then step up to more potent antimicrobial la y jump to the most powerful one..

Even better say I'll just pay for consultation thanks. Keep the drug and hand me a paper prescription so I can get them at a pharmacy.

To TS,
Anyways each of that Cedax should not be more than RM30. The rest should not exceed another RM60-80.

If you had reacted fast that time, pretend say brought not enough money put on thwe shy face and say I'll just pay the consultation fees, pay it, get the precription on paper and kthxbai.

Never to step in there again.

Suggested retail price or doctor nego price?

TS should find a trusted phramacists friend a close one if possible to do a check on the real prices. Of course he should be careful not tot leak it and trouble his friend's because he might get in big trouble with med reps in future.

yep..tonsil can cause glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidneys)..

the clinic charge could be reasonable with that kind of expensive antibiotics..just take it as a lesson not to take antibiotic lightly also.
its a modern disease induced drugs

i like some article in chrisskresser.com can go read when free.. chow need to sleep nao.hope u get well TS

This is what i hate about Private GP.

You are supposed to write the GENERIC name of the drug on the envelope.
For example: You must not write ponstan/pain-killer on envelope. The LAW says you need to label "Mefenamic Acid with a note Analgesic/Painkiller on it.

By doing so, you can prevent cheating by unscrupulous docs and unnecessary legal issues and liabilities.

All the clinics in malaysia have the same habit of writing trade names on their envelope. f***ing enforcement is really sleeping and and not enforcing anything.

When i was a MO, i threw the case note back into a houseman's face when i see them writing trade names on my case note.

You must remember that no one can question a certified MD's prescription even if you complain to authorities. They will just tell the judge and lawyers if they know more about medicine than doctors?
The price of the fees, you can't challenged them because what they charge you is always industry's suggested retail prices which they've already worked out with pharmaceutical reps.

So where is the con and unethical act involved you might ask?

You see the more expensive the drug is, the higher profit margin the doctors get out of it.
So in this case, what the doctor did was overprescribed and pushing expensive drugs to his patients. You can't say he conned you because the drug prices were suggested retail prices and his consultation fees were all legal.

What he did was hiding behind the name of professionalism. Everything he did was right, selling the drugs at suggested prices, within MMA consultation fee recommendations, etc.
More of an honesty issue.

It's like you go to a shop asking to buy a specific product. There are many brands of the product but you ask him to give you one. He grabs the most expensive one he can find since he makes the most profit out of it and sell you instead.

You still can't do much if he tells you that he ONLY stock branded versions of that particular generic drug. You buy it or you leave it. He's a private GP anyway, he can tell you I only stock genuine brands.

Paracetemol, he gives you GSK PANADOL brand only. <removed> he only stocks Pfizer only etc. (just examples).

What I truly meant when i said generic names is WRITING THE INGREDIENT OF THE DRUG.
Eg: If he gives Panadol, write lah Paracetamol on the envelope.
If he gives Augmentin, write lah Co-amoxiclav.
If he gives Lipitor, write lah Atorvastatin.

I find most GP is f***ing llazy and unscrupulous for not labeling what are they giving.
Sometimes they just give the tabs and label it as painkiller. They are soo many painkillers out there in the market la, mangkuk.
How the f*** are the patients able to identify it.
This is NO DIFFERENT from buying street drugs from dealers. They don't label their drugs either.

In an incident of severe adverse drug reaction, hospitals are NOT able to trace back what meds this poor fella has taken since there is no label or whatsoever. So many drugs come in so many shape and sizes.
Imagine this: Patient comes in with severe toxic epidermal necrolysis or steven-johnson's syndrome, he only shows you a bunch of white color tablet but he dont wadafak was in them.

Private GPs are doing this just to protect their asses. If any ADR appears, they cannot hold responsibility for it since there is no label or anything.

TS should be careful with the reaction of her boss. If your boss start showing sulky face or boh song with your MC. He might start thinking ways of how to get rid of you.

That's what is happening in China and Vietnam where workers rights is low and the employer can fire overnight.

Many workers do not dare take MC because just 1 or 2 days of unattendance will result in your dismissal by employer. Some Malaysian employers might adopt this kind of thing but since we have the workers rights in place, they'll think of ways of getting rid of unresourceful staffs.
