I am of the same opinion as MilesAndMore.

Like I said in my article on Discount for Agoda Rooms Bookings , for bookings up to RM1K, the diff betweeen MBB 2 AMEX (7.5%) less MBB Visa/MC (6.5%) = 1% or for RM1K = RM10 diff. And for above RM1K, better go with MBB Visa/MC.

The reasons I can think off why one would go with PayPay for agoda (using AMEX on weekends for the deposit) is

1. The agoda booking is less than RM1K.
2. Not utilizing the 5% cash back allocation on weekends
3. Has credit in pay pal account and wants to use it up.

It is less than RM 1k actually. smile.gif
Anyway, will book directly with the hotel as the rate is cheaper than Agoda, let me check again. hmm.gif

cheaper after 6% or 7.5% discount? If yes, yah, better book direct smile.gif AND if you check out on a weekend and pay at the hotel using your Mbb 2 AMEX, you can earn up to 7.5% returns thumbup.gif That's what I will do for my local stays, I may book the room giving them my Visa or MC number and when I check out I use my AMEX smile.gif

Hey hey hey, that is what I do too all the time tongue.gif Everytime I go to KL (usually Friday), my dad will check-in first and give his Citibank VISA as room security deposit. Then when we're checking out on Sunday, I will give the receptionist my MBB2 AMEX (or sometimes my mom's if I've maxed out my weekend cash back) biggrin.gif

Extra 3% charge if using credit card and I'm not checking out on weekend. So, I'll pay by cash. biggrin.gif
Thanks for the recommendation. rclxms.gif
If pay by Agoda needs to pay service charge but hotel doesn't charge me service charge. biggrin.gif

ah you paid in RM? Then it doesn't matter. Though Amex cannot be used to pay an RM bill on paypal.

If it is in a different currency the extra 1% forex rate from Amex rate will really make Amex bring in less savings than Visa/MC

1) weekdays (RM)
MBB2 Amex - eff 2.5%
Visa/MC - eff 6.5% (normal). eff 7% (2x pts if considered overseas - plats only)
VI - eff 7% (2x pts), 8.5% (5x if considered overseas)

2) weekends (RM)
MBB2 Amex - eff 7.5%
Visa/MC - eff 6.5% (normal). eff 7% (2x pts if considered overseas - plats only)
VI - eff 7% (2x pts), 8.5% (5x if considered overseas)

3) weekdays (forex)
MBB2 Amex (2.5% forex rate) - eff 0%
Visa/MC (1.25% forex rate) - eff 5.25% (normal). eff 5.75% (2x pts if considered overseas - plats only)
VI (1.25% forex rate)- eff 7.25% (5x overseas)

4) weekends (forex)
MBB2 Amex (2.5% forex rate)- eff 5%
Visa/MC (1.25% forex rate) - eff 5.25% (normal). eff 5.75% (2x pts if considered overseas - plats only)
VI (1.25% forex rate)- eff 7.25% (5x overseas)

So Amex only comes top in one type of transaction vs a normal Visa/MC up to plat level. Assuming MC/Visa 6% discount on Agoda

Fantastic detail calculations on the effective savings and comparison rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif notworthy.gif Conclusion, don't go with MBB 2 AMEX for booking your hotel room with agoda but instead go with the MBB Visa/MC 6% discount smile.gif UNLESS you can pay with your MBB 2 AMEX on weekends in RM.

Yah I always select RM for my agoda using my credit cards. Paying with Pay Pal for agoda booking was a reply to fruitie's consideration in using this option.

As for the second sentence, I got no idea if AMEX can use to pay RM bill on paypay. My Pay Pal account Primary currency in is MYR and I top up using direct debit from my bank account.

i dislike paying in RM on Agoda.. (though they seems to force the option). They offer very poor forex rates compared to booking in the local currency.

if you do credit card linking in paypal, only Visa/MC can be used to pay for transactions in RM.

Agoda always automatically bill our MYR credit card in MYR now even if you view the price in USD till the last checkout page doh.gif

Hi, I just received these cards on Friday. I'd made first swap today. BTW, I got a question: how come my CC account doesn't automatically appear in my M2U (I'd sign up M2U last year when opened a saving account)? icon_question.gif

Of course it doesn't. If it's AMEX, it is very likely that you'll see it in M2U tomorrow after 8am as they usually are very fast in updating AMEX transaction. Otherwise, you'll see it a few days later. However, do note that your available credit limit is already decreased the moment your transaction is approved.
