I'm just wondering if any of you use flashcard apps to help with studying? I would say it's the single most useful tool in my studies but I'm really surprised by how so few people know about this

No. I do not use anki, taekim, core or any other flashcard software. Book is my friend. smile.gif

Have you guys even tried flashcard software? I think it will completely change the way you study. remember more, better, faster. The only thing is creating decks is a bit of a hassle sweat.gif

Tried it. Didn't like it. I like browsing jisho more.
Also, if you plan to become more proficient in regards to sentence structure and understanding slang, I highly recommend reading books to you. Comics, novels, magazines, short stories, articles or maybe visual novels. Flashcards are good in helping you memorize vocabs, but not really sentence structure.
But the best way is, of course, you write everything you've learn so far.

Decide your mind first.
If you want to study or work in Japan (or work in Japanese based company in Malaysia) you need those certs but if you just want to enjoy entertainment, just study the language leisurely without having to stress your head out.

change かわいそう to 寂しい, your sentence would be less awkward smile.gif
It's not wrong though.

Quick question. Which is better for a total beginner, Minna no Nihongo or Genki series?

Little backstory: I just found some journal of my great grandfather, which is in Japanese, dated back from late WW2. I know I could just pay someone to translate them but I want to read it myself. Any starter tips guys?

try taekim
or for long term learning, try Anki flash cards software
