edit:

just do a benchmark on the WD hdd,

Write: 100.0MB/s
Read : 102.0 MB/s

If basic Microsoft office apps only it works flawless and smooth ? Ok thx for the input guys !  smile.gif
*
basic work only should be ok for VM with windows installed, i have tried (just test) play diablo3 inside with everything set to the lowest so far still acceptable. anyway, for microsoft words those there is mac version.
Better use bootcamp if wana use windows to play mid and heavy game / application.

So bootcamp is something like a must if we wan to boot windows in Mac ? haha

Appreciate your reply bro  smile.gif
*
not reli, depend on what you need the windows do smile.gif
from what i know the most stable booting in windows has 3 option:

1. Bootcamp
Pros : your macbook can completely 100% become a window pc
cons : must restart and choose to boot into windows, also means u cant use OS X in the same time until u reboot again.
Have to isolate your hdd in to windows and Mac. example: total 250gb drive, u have to choose how much for OSX and how much for Windows, then both of them cant share the space after decided.

2. VMware fusion
Pros : can use Windows and Mac togather without restarting, can share file at OS X desktop and other drive, use around 10gb space for windows only, good for testing stuff / light software only.
Cons: will have slightly lag when loading stuff inside vm, eats lots of RAM (atleast 3.5gb), can run heavy application but will laggy, not every software from windows support vm (i heard from my colleague which use OSX too, i nvr encounter that yet)

3. Parellel desktop
Pros : somthing like vmware fusion, but this application can run at background of ur OSX, means when u double click .exe those at OS X, it will straight promt out the window base installer etc to let u directly run those thing at OS X.
Cons : I feel abit more laggy when opening and runing software in parellel then vmware fusion, so others i not reli sure..

anyway, above those is my personal experience, doesnt mean all is correct but that is my personal opinion only hehe. u may try ask other and see >.<

I know the files from the Windows partition can be accessed, what I meant is whether the partition can be used to run as a OS inside Parallels directly?
*
i have tried with the parallel but i feel it is making my OS X become laggy >.< but i m not using bootcamp, just installed window 7 inside the parallel n use only

Wah..16GB also not enough to eat mer? aha
*
is not because of RAM is eaten alot (when i open parallel it still have alot free ram there) but i just dont know why i feel more laggy when using parallel compare to vmware fusion >.< when i using VMware fusion and put minimize to dock, the os X is still as smooth as just fresh restart, but when i am using parallel, it will have a little bit of delay or laggy i can feel, maybe that just me tongue.gif you can try to install both and see which u prefer anyway ^^

Yes.
I can run Parellel smoothly on my MBP 2010 with 4GB 1033 Mhz RAM & SATA 2 SSD.
I don't see any reason you can't run it smoothly with 8GB 1600 Mhz RAM & SATA 3 SSD.

My personal experience. cool2.gif

If you are a student. You are already enjoying that much of discount.

hmm i also not sure, maybe i have do it with the wrong setting >.<
anyway, this has noting to do with the RAM and Processor as both i have monitor it, they are like proc just bellow 20%, ram is just used around 13gb only

Another question, anyone running more than 1 virtualized Windows on mac (either parallel or vmware fusion) simultaneously? looking at it for some windows server based testing.

i have tried open both. no problem, even using CorD to remote desktop to another window server smile.gif

QUOTE(merchant9 @ Jul 17 2012, 09:49 PM)
I am using my sister's account to type this, need some help as I am only familiar with PC / Windows.

My sister bought this MacBook Air 13 for personal / business use. She have a particular application which only runs on Windows, so she need Windows.

I would like to ask advise on which is the better option

Option A: Install bootcamp, define 50GB partition for Windows 7 Professional + MS Office 2010 + some of my sister's business application. Install VMWare Fusion and install Windows + Office, etc. This way, she can either boot up as Windows or still access Windows via VM. All working files will be saved in OS X partition and still be accessible through the Windows 7 on VM - not sure if this is achievable.

Option B: Install Windows 7 Pro + Office 2010 and some application on VMWare Fusion WITHOUT bootcamp. Cannot boot up to Windows, will always boot up to OS X and run Windows in VM. Files will be stored in OS X partition and still be accessible through Windows and OS X.

Which is better? With or without Bootcamp?
This topic seem inactive. It only display owner's decal but not tell where to buy them.
Thanks but I was hoping for a Malaysian store where I can actually ask the seller to help me stick them? I'm a butterfingers and it'd probably horrify my MacBook Air if I were to try sticking them myself.
*
since is only document work, VMware should be more then enough for the work. btw, the mb air got atleast 4gb ram ?
and once install the windows inside vm, u need to tweak some "effect" on the windows for it to run smoothly example, disable the aero peak and disable some auto start up programe those smile.gif
do you mind to be more specify which is the most window application your sister use ? if only ms office, there are mac ver ms office smile.gif

Actually, I recommended my sister Ultrabook but she ended up with a MacBook. Now, nobody knows how to set it up so I gotta step in and fill the gap (with some Google and knowledge here, of course!) Yes, the MacBook have 8GB of RAM so should be ok with VM - what are the things that have to be disabled in Windows?

Her office software only works on Windows so she definitely need Windows. Besides that, she need MS Office to do quotation with Winword, data massaging with Excel and presentation on Powerpoint. For e-mailing, I have asked her to use the Mail application in OS X. I set it up with her Hotmail so everything is tested and working fine.

Now she is asking what software she can use to watch movies. In Windows, we have K-Lite Codec Pack but after Google, I noticed OS X only have Mplayer and VLC - which is better?
*
haha, i also a newbie on os X which this is my 3rd week using my mbp XD
from me, i have install vmware fusion, then install windows 7 32bit. the vmware you may create with 10gb hdd space or slightly more if you want, then the ram put around 4gb will be more then enough already. after installed the windows, you may go to right click my compute > properties and advanc, click setting under the performance and u shall see alot setting there, you may disable those which you think you no need. anyway, since you have 8GB ram, it should be no problem even if u didnt disable those smile.gif for MS office, you may ask ur sister install the mac version microsoft office, it is same like windows microsoft office.
For movie, so far i can open most of the format with VLC player ^^

i have 156gb free on my hdd lol, cos once my work done i normally will all dump to my ext hdd. but seriously, if you got the 2k budget, u may try consider the 500gb, although it is expensive but still it can let u do more smile.gif no need always plug the ext drive haha.
