It does, behind private IP, your port might still be translated when passes through Maxis NAT. PS3 and the other end server in PS network will detect that as NAT type 3.

NAT type 3 - behind NAT and ports are blocked
NAT type 2 - behind NAT but port forwarding is done (applies to public IP, could be a problem with private WAN IP since you can't actually do port forwarding on Maxis NAT)
NAT type 1 - DMZ (with public IP of course)

Does Private IP cause lag in online games?
I mean, somehow using Streamyx also have better ping when I play Sudden Attack SEA.. MY server still lag once a while..

I can't even port forward using Private IP to host servers, etc

Maybe I wanna change to public IP but I'm just afraid it might bring problems speed wise, etc.

I also dunno la, maybe just stick to private IP.. not sure!

private ip are used for communication within our internal network devices. while our router has both internal interface (private ip)and external interface (public ip)

our PC private ip can be seen by typing ipconfig (win cmd)
our router private ip (internal interface) can be seen in ipconfig as well (default gateway)

devices in our internal network cannot be seen by Internet as we do not have public ip, everything need to go through router. in some cases we need to do port forwarding so a device within our network can been seen in Internet, for example the DVR for our home CCTV system.

Added on July 21, 2012, 9:36 amso actually all our internal network device behind router would only has private ip whether you are using maxis or unifi. the question is actually should be "can we do port forwarding?" with maxis

Let me explain

Maxis is trying to save IPV4 address , after all we are running out of IPV4 (or already have run out - I need to check). So they came up with two options , Private IP and Public IP option for their broadband.

Now , private IP is not something new. Our routers assign private IP , this what allows us to share 1 Internet connection to all of our PCs in household. What maxis is doing is that instead of you giving a Public IP (an IP address which can be accessed by anyone) they give you their own Internal IP which then connects to a public IP. Something like you are put behind their "router"

They do offer Public IP for those who need it , aka people who want to view their CCTV from outside and other complicated setup. For gamers , we want Public IP - this includes games like COD MW series whereby if you are behind NAT , there is no way on earth you could host a game. For games like WoW , DOTA2 and others (TF2 , basically Source-based games) - its not a concern. However for games that which require you to be the host and want the ports to be opened

Who should get Public IP ?

1. hardcore gamers that host and play games
2. CCTV owners
3. You run your own webserver (aka web developer)/developer

I don't know if Maxis charges you for Public IP

What will happen when I get public IP?

I believe I am using private IP currently. The IP address of my Thomson TG799vn (router) is 192.168.1.254. It is running DHCP server and assigning IP address range of 192.168.1.64~253 to the PCs connected to its LAN ports. So if I request Maxis for public IP, does that mean my Thomson router's IP address will be changed to a public IP address? Will my Thomson router start assigning public IPs for the PCs connected to the internal network (this does not sound right)?

Thank you in advance.

some things everyone should know.
maxis conserving/running out of ipv4 ips is a myth.

maxis has enough in its pool of ips for it's customer.
maxis's conversion to public ip is free, you just need to ask for it.
those who are not tech savvy just gets the default private ip/proxy.
I do not want to elaborate on morality issues here.

TM has public dynamic ips for all it's customers.
P1 even offer to sell fixed ips rm300 for 5 pieces.

now, the conversion to ipv6 ips has been scheduled for as early as end of this year.
P1 has made a media announcement some weeks back.
all isps should and will follow suit by then.

so why maxis sets default private ips thru their proxies?
my guesses are
connections through maxis' proxies enabled it to monitor amongst others:
1) bandwidth usage / throttling
2) website and downloading patterns / blocking of certain file sharing websites
3) time and frequencies of usage / selling block of bandwidth offpeak
4) blocking of sites it deem necessary / babysits
5) Grouping of light users under one proxy and heavy users on another / bandwidth shaping
6) many more

be aware that the thomson router that maxis provides has a backdoor.
maxis can enable hotspots, routing config and whachamalits thru it.

private ips/maxis' proxy can complicate matter like what prasys says:
1. hardcore gamers that host and play games
2. CCTV owners
3. You run your own webserver (aka web developer)/developer
and also
4) all secure logins eg overseas banking transactions might flag you for using proxy
5) downloads might be interrupted as many people are using the same ip
6) one person do, everyone else on the same proxy gets 114a
7) many more

In short,
everyone should request public ip from maxis.

Hah, I think the same, we have been using streamyx / unifi for time where TM provides dynamic IP as public IP, while i like the above said one person do, all gets 114A, BS act.. Haha

Really informative thread.

If public IP, does it make your computer more vulnerable to attacks?

Last time could depend on router's hardware firewall for some protection, but it seems the Thomson router might kind of suck in protection?

what are the impact if we have change from Private IP to public ip? do you facing the routing issue or the slow connection after changed?

I have read the Maxis forum, it looks big fire.
