Thx for your reply ken_wickedboy

So based on ur answer, 1 Forum will use 1 SQL, 1 Blog will use another 1 SQL etc

My another nOOb question is:
a forum with 10,000 forumers will use 1 SQL only? Or each forumer use 1 SQL = 10,000 SQL to be used?
Thx again in advance  smile.gif

One SQL database for one thing
Meaning , one sql database for one forum or one sql database for a blog.
They are seperated.

try these:

www.275mb.com

or

www.tollfreepages.com

Both support SQL, CGI, etc... and has more than 100mb storage (free account)

Don't just look at specs. I suggest you look for support and service as well. Some cheap hosting does not provide you any service. So sometimes when you have problems, you will have tough time trying to solve them if the webhost is not helpful enough.

Narrow down your webhost to a few and then log into their support or customer service to see how they reply questions. It helps to evaluate how good they are.

Also, with such cheap hosting fees, I don't recommend anyone go for free webhosting. These host are very slow and are cluttered with lots of advertisement. Also features are very limited.

abubin you're right, the most important thing for webhosting is fast support and availablity.

If u keep yourself updated, Streamyx can't access US servers consistently well!

I agreed!

Recently I thought my websites were down, but when checking with the hosting provider, they said things are OK and they were correct. My streamyx was problematic - some websites, even BBC was not accessible 2 days ago. Come to think of it, what are the chances BBC is actually down? Not likely!

Maybe Streamyx does have problem to access certain IP blocks (aka web addresses) on certain days. But it's back to normal now.

One more thing I'd like to add here about the hosting provider that I choose.

I've been involved in web design in Msia for about 1 yr now. All these while, I've been using oversea's provider, paying in USD. I get their info from researching online and word of mouth. Their service are quite OK, in some case, like my subscription to accuwebhosting and qualityhosting, these two exceeded my expectation. BUT rather expensive, something like $10-$15 per year for 50-100MB. Do the math.

Recently I purchase a 50MB hosting from sampride (serverFreak hosting, see his signature), for RM20 per year. Cheap and no problem so far. I rely a lot on Google Adsense to make some money, so my website's availability is the utmost importance to me! With some of my other foreign hosting expiring soon, I'm planning to buy more space from serverFreak.

Also I can attest that sampride will answer to your PM or email promptly. Very helpful especially when you are not sure how to set up DNS server, etc.

I'm writing this to share my experience with a Malaysian hosting provider. My first time using. Honestly, not bad at all!

USD3.95 per month is expensive, even though they offer 5GB, I never can imagine needing that much space. Then for 1 year, how much you are paying? USD summore :-) Unless you plan to run a forum, then you *may* need that space.

The biggest space I have is 200MB, even that, it is underutilised (about 80MB used only so far)

I usually go for provider that offer fixed ANNUAL charge, eg $10 per year, or $15 per year. Or sampride's hosting offers RM20 per year for 50MB which is most suitable for web upstarts.

There's a thread about variety of local hosting companies offering from RM15 to RM40 per year. Much cheaper for me. As long as they can keep their uptime and customer support is done efficiently.

TQ!

Remember 50mb includes webhosting and email. If you keep your emails on the server you won't have enough space. Also, if your site uses mysql, most probably 50mb is not enough. It's only for static webpages.

If you also keep lots of photos, you will definitely need more space. 50mb for me is too little. Go for at least 100mb. But, that's my personal opinion. If you just want to startup and learn something, I guess you will need it cheap. You can always upgrade to higher package anytime.

Personal usage meaning?

For example, when I travel to a place for 3-4 nights, take about 400 photos, then select the photos, resize, and get about 300 photos of about 60KB per photo, you're only using 18MB of space out of 50MB.

Mind you, 300 photos to put online is a lot already. Unless you don't resize it.

Point taken. Again, it depends what you intend to do.

One more thing, if you're doing a website, usually you do it on your PC first right? Then from your PC, you will upload the files to the site. In the PC, already can gauge how many space you will need, 50MB? 100MB? Then you won't buy too little or too big.

Emails, for me, I usually download into my Outlook. I don't get too many emails anyway for my sites, maybe once a week got visitors asking questions.

Photo size also up to the person, you can save the photos as medium, or high, or maximum quality. The size will vary accordingly. I'd say if anyone would upload high quality photos, maybe 100MB is necessary.

For web upstarts, usually we don't use SQL smile.gif That's mostly for expert.

In my opinion, if you want to store high quality photo, 100MB is still not enough. high res photo roughly about 2-4MB/photo, so u cant store much in 100MB. biggrin.gif

So according to my44's case, 50MB should be enough for normal usage such as giving out information and some *.GIF pictures which is small size and easy for 56K users to view it. biggrin.gif

So if wanna use SQL then the 50MB wont be sufficient?
