Maybe due to the milk in chocolate. They are lactose intolerant.
Also grapes, oranges and sour apple. |

Read somewhere that too much raisins/grapes will cause kidney failure or something like that. There are too many cases where dogs died caused by this toxic.
Anyone free enough to Google? Raisins/Grapes = Toxic |

Others i know of :
Chocolate = Heart Attack Onion/Garlic = Red blood cells burst Macademia nuts = Muscle weakness Pls note, eating a piece or 2 does not cause the above effects. Only in large quantities. (Experts test with a cup) Also, smaller the dog, less the amount needed to kill. I used to do alot of research on dog health as I took a course. Someone will need to Google to get some proof. |

Cocoa or any chocolate substance are a NO NO to dogs because as you know it provides high energy to us, humans. And with that amount of energy, the dog's heart will pump faster and faster until it fails.

It's true that most owners don't know it but no no for dogs include grapes/raisins/chocolate/coffee/garlic/onions/macadamia nuts/cat food... looks harmless enuff but these can be deadly.
Avoid the sugary/salty stuff as well, it's not good for them. The above are usually life threatening if your dog consume it in large quantities like the whole can of nescafe or a 1kg bar of chocolate. It's ok to treat them with small amounts once in a blue moon... or switch to healthy alternatives like bananas or dog biscuit or ice cubes. There is a bigger list here:- http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cl...&articleid=1030 I hope this helps! edit: BTW feeding too much dog food will also cause problems like obesity and worst still bloat This post has been edited by aaronpang: Jan 11 2006, 06:14 PM |

Dogs should avoid:
Chocolate(Dark chocolates) coz it is very concentrated in cocoa, some dogs can eat a bit of it but some, just a small nibble can cause a reaction and instand death. It contains caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline that can even cause heart failure. Onions are worst! A dog will die from the lack of red blood cells. Garlic, 1cm per 10kg body weight is ok as garlic helps in flea and tick control. Grapes, the toxicity comes from the skin and seeds, your dog will appear fine now but in the long run... it could lead to abnormal death. Fried and salty foods: These are greasy, full or fat and sodium. Dogs cannot take up large amounts of fat and sodium. Why? Coz it will cause a dog to have a fatty heart that cannot work properly, liver disease from the high content. Sodium(salt) doesn't cause a dog to drop fur, it causes a dog to have kidney stones and kidney disease. Oranges causes a dog to pass watery stool if given a lot. Human medication and vitamins can do more harm than good. Always consult a vet. Dogs cannot take in large amount of fruits and veges also. Bones, raw bones from lamb, beef and chicken are ok, as long RAW. Cooked bones splinter in the tummy, can get trapped in the throat and tear the linings of the stomach. Anyway, still best to avoid bones in the end lah cause if your dog is a swallower, then NO BONES AT ALL!!!! |

QUOTE(RheyLin @ Jan 9 2006, 11:33 AM) Chocolate can be lethal to pets because it contains theobromine, which causes increased heart rate, central nervous system stimulation and constriction of arteries. Clinical symptoms range from vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and excitability to cardiac failure, seizures and death. This can occur as quickly as four to six hours after ingestion. Baking chocolate is the worst because it contains the highest amount of theobromine.A potential lethal dose is only one pound of chocolate in a 16-pound dog. Same to the cats that eat fish bones, small, sharp pointed edge flexible bones. We ourselves got into hell of a trouble if any tiny fish bones got stuck in our throat. |

More warnings from wikipedia QUOTE("Wikipedia") * Dogs love the flavor of chocolate, but chocolate in sufficient doses is lethally toxic to dogs (and horses and possibly cats). Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical stimulant that, together with caffeine and theophylline, belongs to the group of methylxanthine alkaloids. Dogs are unable to metabolize theobromine effectively. If they eat chocolate, the theobromine can remain in their bloodstreams for up to 20 hours, and these animals may experience fast heart rate, hallucinations, severe diarrhea, epileptic seizures, heart attacks, internal bleeding, and eventually death. A chocolate candy bar can be sufficient to make a small dog extremely ill or even kill it. Approximately thirty grams of baking chocolate per kilogram (1/2 ounce per pound) of body weight is enough to be poisonous. In case of accidental intake of chocolate by especially a smaller dog, contact a veterinarian or animal poison control immediately; it is commonly recommended to induce vomiting within two hours of ingestion. Large breeds are less susceptible to chocolate poisoning, but still are far less tolerant of the substance than humans are.

QUOTE(ZhaoYun @ Jan 19 2006, 04:02 PM) Add garlic to your dog food. Dogs enjoy the flavor and garlic is a natural flea repellent.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Onion and garlic poisoning Onions and garlic are other dangerous food ingredients that cause sickness in dogs, cats and also livestock. Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger. Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet's red blood cells burst while circulating in its body. At first, pets affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhoea. They will show no interest in food and will be dull and weak. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected animal's urine and it becomes breathless. The breathlessness occurs because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number. The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. A single meal of 600 to 800 grams of raw onion can be dangerous whereas a ten-kilogram dog, fed 150 grams of onion for several days, is also likely to develop anaemia. The condition improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness. I also dont know which one is corrrect? This post has been edited by providence: Jan 20 2006, 09:16 PM |

But if you give your dog a lil bit of garlic, it's ok i think because it'll help to repel ticks from infesting your dog.

my dogs loves to eat rambutans, and they will eat it all then spit out the seed
rice can give but your dog will get hyper as its same effect like when you give human lotsa sugar... so make sure if you feed him rice you burn up his energy otherwise he will destroy your stuff and dig holes, etc... mix oil with their food as dogs cant get cholesterol like humans and its good for their fur. olive oil is the best and tastier too if you wanna give bones make sure that you give it with the meat as it breaks the bones when they are chewing on the meat... be sure thought that the chicken you bought is clean otherwise just cook the meat and throw away the bones...
