one of the first things to do is to contact your seller and update your warranty to 2-years international.

I called up my seller, he said that the whole world Lenovo is giving y480/y580 only 1 year, but malaysia got 2 years, the only problem is that Lenovo web site didn't take this into account and lists all units as 1 year. you have to ask you seller to inform Lenovo (most likely they want the photo/scan of the invoice + item list emailed to them), and then they will update your unit to 2 years:

One thing i'm not sure, they always list the location as Australia. Don't know if it is ok, can we just ignore it?

Anyone has an answer?

windows update after a fresh install takes a long time, and will need a few times, so don't panic. be patient, after a a couple of days your system will be fully updated.

pls click on the "view update history". and show us the item that failed. this screen doesn't tell us enough info.

my suggestion would be:

- restart machine
- after reboot, run win update again
- make sure you are not running any other program, just update.

i experinced similar thing before, if an item keeps failing, i just ignore it, within a few days windows will update itself, and these problems will usually be solved. it just takes time.

hi bro, don't listen to him, for malaysian market, lenovo give us 2 years for y480 and y580, but you have to send them email with the photo of the invioce and the item list (found in your box). or else, you will only have 1 year.

Added on October 29, 2012, 5:56 pmif you are in Klang Valley, can buy from this seller - gn175546, his shop is in Old Klang Road, but he delivers for free in Klang Valley.

you can ask the seller to change your ram from 4 gb to 8 gb (well for my y480 only had 4gb), and if you like to have a pair of better ram like Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz (4gb x 2), you can also ask him to install this for you and ask him to trade-in your stock ram (usually samsung), he will gladly do it and offer a reasonable price for it. and of course, buy the extra 1 year warranty.

hmm, can't help with installment. maybe other folks here can share their experience.

for the ram, yes u'd need to add (just) a little, as corsair is more expensive.

hi, besides devour, there is another seller gn175546 - he provides free delivery in klang valley. maybe both also worth consideration.

3 questions:

1) is your 4gb ram now sufficient for your usage? if your are not heavily multitasking, then 4gb should be enuf. I have 8gb on my y480, but normally the RAM usage is not more than 30%.

2) do you have extra cash and don't mind spending another rm80-90? if yes, then get 8gb la, since ram is so cheap now. or else, just use 4gb until you feel the need to upgrade.

3) have u considered SSD? it will speed up your com better than extra ram.

SSD is Solid State Drive, which is like a new kind of hard disk, but it has no moving parts, so it is very very fast and should last longer. but now still new, and is a bit more $$$ than normal hdd.

a lot of y480 and y580 users here have done this operation:

1. take out the dvd drive
2. move the hdd to the dvd slot (nned to buy a special caddy, cost around <rm50)*
3. put the ssd into the orginal hdd slot.

that way the heat problem is solved, and the start up time is down to below 10s.

i have done 1, and 2, not yet 3, as i have no problem with the speed, and also to wait for cheaper ssd.
