The club consists of a group of individuals who holds special appreciation and praise towards the colossal world of Greek antiquities, primarily legends and myths, and the writings of famous poets and authors. The club admits any individual, under consideration, who have keen interest in Greek mythology and/or literature regardless of that individual's insight regarding the two mentioned subjects.

Members may post writings in any form of poetry, whether authorship belongs to the member or somebody else is not a matter of concern, but it is highly advised that members mention the name of the writer if it was written by another person. It is also recommended that other members take part in the interpretation of a poem posted by a member.

Members may discuss any matter concerning Greek mythology and literature, and should always seek reference to support their assertions, as to avoid any wrong information.
(Greek mythology and literature, not Greek mythology and Greek literature!)

Arion (アリオン?) was a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, published in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Comic Ryū from March 1979 to September 1984. The story follows Arion, a young man kidnapped by Hades as a child and raised to believe that his mother was blinded by Zeus and that killing the ruler of Mount Olympus will cure her.

An animated feature film adaptation, written and directed by Yasuhiko, was released in 1986.

***

Not exactly faithful to the lore, but the arch-types are there. The battle scenes were great.

The movie can be found on youtube, split into 10 minute parts due to constraints.

I can honestly say discovering anime even at my relatively older age is like breathing fresh new air into my perception of entertainment. Especially with today's emphasis on "reality tv" and before that, "shock tv".

There was one relatively "accurate" anime adaptation of Greek myths, one of the earliest animes I've seen.

Hoshi no Orpheus
QUOTE
A magical blending of old and new, with colorful animation and an exciting disco/rock musical score, "Winds of Change" is a re-telling of 5 ancient Greek myths. These delightful cautionary tales are adapted from the classical author, Ovid, with a new character, called Wondermaker added. Wondermaker acts as our guide to each episode's meaning, and transforms himself into each of its heroes. First, he is Perseus cutting off the head of Medusa; then, Actaeon being turned into a deer for spying on the goddess Diana as she bathes; the god Mercury in a tale of envy; Orpheus descending into Hades for his love, Eurydice; and finally, Phaeton wreaking havoc with the sun-god's chariot.

The more recent "Heroic Age" is a retelling with a sci-fi fantasy setting of Hercules.

QUOTE
The story's theme is based on stories in Greek mythology, especially those surrounding Heracles, upon whom the main character is based, and his Twelve Labors. Many of the other characters are also based on Greek mythological figures; characters share similar names to their Greek counterparts, and how their relationship is defined with others correspond with Greek stories. The title of the series, Heroic Age, is also a slight testament to the similarities to Greek mythology, referring to the time of the Heroic Age. The tribes featured in the anime are loosely based on Hesiod's Five Ages of Mankind.

Both sound very interesting, especially when I've only properly read about Heracles' Twelve Labours recently...

I'm fairly into the myth. And I read the whole Percy Jackson book series, which puts a refreshing modern twist to the series. And I was an avid follower of Hercules tv series and Xena the Warrior Princess.

I must say my favourite Greek god is Apollo and Artemis. smile.gif

Imagine what will happen if it was the Titans who won instead of Zeus & co. and how can Zeus's father lose to Zeus? and if Zeus's father is one of the Titans, does it mean that the other Titans were Zeus & Co. uncle and aunt?

I'd think the reason for the loss of the Titans against the gods was due to the aid of the Cyclopes on the side of the gods... (Zeus received a thunderbolt, a helmet of invisibility to Hades, a trident for Poseidon)

Errr I'd answer yes to the question...

I love Hermessssssss, just very sneaky.. There was this story about Hermes, not sure if it is a story mentioned in reliable sources or not..

There was a poor lumberer resting near a river. When he wanted to wash his axe (or something else, I forgot), he dropped his axe into the river, and couldn't get it back. As Hermes was watching, he went to the lumberer, and presented a golden axe to him. Hermes asked if the golden axe was the axe that he lost, but the lumberer answered no. Then Hermes presented another axe, a silver one, and asked if it was the lumberer's axe. To this, the lumberer answered no again. Then Hermes showed the lumberer his real axe, and the lumberer said that this was the axe that he lost. For the lumberer's honesty, Hermes gave the lumberer his axe back, and also the golden axe.

No la. Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Hades falls for her and kidnap her. After much negotiations and arrangements, they decide Hades could only marry Persephone if he let her to go out from underworld every 6 months alternately. So this creates Summer and Spring (when Persephone lepak with her mum) and Autumn/Winter when she goes back to Hades. thumbup.gif

So this creates Summer and Spring (when Persephone lepak with her mum) and Autumn/Winter when she goes back to Hades. thumbup.gif
*
That's accurate but for one little part..
Hades let Persephone go unconditionally, but set a trap for her: he gave Persephone a seed(?) to eat before her leave, and Persephone ignorant of the effects of the seed, ate it and went back to her mother. Her mother told her that after having ate the seed, Persephone would have to return to the underworld for a period of time every year... It's interesting , isn't it.....

I used to create all the olympians in The Sims 3, assign them the relevant traits (example: Apollo was given the Vain, Artistic, Atheletic, Flirt and Brave) etc, then install a mod that generate FB-like status updates as I play the game. Result is damn funny mang!

what goes around comes around i guess...
Cronus overthrew Uranus with the help of Gaia..
Then Zeus overthrew Cronus and imprisoned the titans into the pit of Tartarus.

Funny thing is Cronus was the youngest of Titans same as Zeus which is the youngest of the Olympians ... Both overthrew their father ... LOL

The irony ..

But I'm more interested with Titans such as Hyperion, Atlas, Prometheus, Oceanus, Tethys, Rhea and etc ...

By the way Rhea is zeus's mother...hades and poseidon too

well to me...the titans are kinder to man rather than the Olympians ...
If you look at Zeus's bio...the thing that he does best is fapping greek womeenz and producing bastards ..
cant imagine how can Hera take it all ...

Well Prometheus was a kind Titan who tricked the Olympians for bigger sacrifice and stole it to for the consumption of man.
After that he stole the fire of Olympian and introduce them to man.

Atlas, He was also the god who instructed mankind in the art of astronomy, a tool which was used by sailors in navigation and farmers in measuring the seasons..

Gaia was the Earth ...give food and abundance to man.

The only thing thats synonymous with Olympians are fappin' orgy incest

Norse mythology is grim and dark. Greek and Roman gods aren't "heroic" because they were like spoiled, gifted children and weren't afraid to show off their powers. They were immortal and even in the bloodbath of the Trojan War as told in the Iliad they simply "fled" back to Olympus when their possessed avatars were defeated in the field of battle.

Norse mythology is all about the ending, the gods and heroes already know that Ragnarok was approaching for all of them. All that remained were for them to do mighty deeds so that they could be remembered and be honored before their time was up.

Who thinks the User bar could use a little Greek War phonopoly.

Btw Since we are on Greek stuff, why do you think their culture revolves around homophobia? I came across an article explaining this culture and it was explained by a Spartan. When both men come in a relationship of sorts that involves intimacy, there lies a bridge to pass on the art of war from lover to lover.

In Thebes, the Sacred band consists of all lovers.

I think you got it all wrong..
the greeks encouraged homosexuality especially soldiers ...
They've discovered that intimate relationship between men promotes better reason to fight and they fight well..
even the flower Hyacinths was named after Apollo's gay lover ..

I'll refer to Apollodorus' The Library... since I can't remember every detail...

QUOTE
Theogony
Ouranos, the personification(?) of the sky, married Gaia, the earth, and fathered the Hundred-Handers, and the Cyclopes (Arges, Steropes and Brontes) among others. But Ouranos hurled his children into Tartaros (a place of darkness, as distant from earth as the earth from the sky), and then he fathered the Titans, Cronos being the youngest of all.

Gaia persuaded the Titans to attack Ouranos, having been angered by his action, and gave an adamantine (a mythical metal of extreme hardness) sickle to Cronos. The Titans attacked their father, and Cronos severed his father's genitals and threw them into the sea. The Furies (or the Erinyes) were born from the drops of blood of Ouranos that fell on Gaia. When the Titans had won, they entrusted the leadership to Cronos. Cronos married his sister Rhea, and swallowed his children as they were born (after Gaia and Ouranos had prophesied that Cronos' power would be stripped off by his own son).

Rhea gave birth to Zeus in a cave on Mount Dicte. Zeus was protected by the Curetes and the nymphs. The Curetes would beat their spears against their shields to prevent Cronos from hearing the child's voice. Rhea passed a stone wrapped in fabric to Cronos to swallow (I still remember this one in God of War II(?)).

When Zeus was grown, he was helped by Metis (Metis personifies cunning intelligence), and she gave Cronos a drug to swallow, which resulted in the gods whom he swallowed to be disgorged. Zeus and the gods went to war against Cronos and the Titans. Gaia prophesied that Zeus would obtain victory if he freed those hurled into the Tartaros. So, Zeus set them free, and the Cyclopes gave Zeus thunder and lightning, Hades a helmet of invisibility, and Poseidon a trident. With these weapons, the gods won over the Titans, and kept them in the Tartaros. Zeus then governed over the heavens, Poseidon over the sea and Hades over the Underworld...
Sorry if it looks as if it was copied from a book, because for the most part, it is.

I think you got it all wrong..
the greeks encouraged homosexuality especially soldiers ...
They've discovered that intimate relationship between men promotes better reason to fight and they fight well..
even the flower Hyacinths was named after Apollo's gay lover ..

I should read more on Norse myth... I feel it's interesting, but I'm not sure where to start... Do you have any recommendation of a book?

As for the Norse full text themselves:

Who thinks the User bar could use a little Greek War phonopoly.

Btw Since we are on Greek stuff, why do you think their culture revolves around homophobia?  I came across an article explaining this culture and it was explained by a Spartan. When both men come in a relationship of sorts that involves intimacy, there lies a bridge to pass on the art of war from lover to lover.

In Thebes, the Sacred band consists of all lovers.

You're welcome to make another userbar, the one I made wasn't really planned... biggrin.gif

In some parts of the underworld. Yes you are correct.

QUOTE
There were several sections of the realm of Hades, including Elysium, the Asphodel Meadows, and Tartarus. Greek mythographers were not perfectly consistent about the geography of the afterlife. A contrasting myth of the afterlife concerns the Garden of the Hesperides, often identified with the Isles of the Blessed, where the blessed heroes may dwell.

they dont want old myth lingering ..

they want total control of people beliefs ...

The Edith Hamilton book isn't in poetry and not in ye olde English, should be easier for the casual reader.

Mere pieces of the puzzle under the veneer of worldly myths behind the props...smokescreens holding up the pillars of the cradle of humanity, myths are. Yet more real than the illusions that myths portray. Uncovering the "true" skin of the myths would turn this world inside out and the honchos smile.gif
