standard is extremely limited, with their small card pool available. bcoz of this, there is bound to be a certain type/s of decks that will completely dominate the Standard environment. for example, just not so long ago, Ravager Affinity decks completely dominated the Standard environment, together with Tooth and Nail. Closer to today (before Guildpact), Ghazi-Glare and MUC (mono blue control) and BDW and a few other types dominates the environment. play anything outside that scope, and u probably lose. if u play beatdown, go for jitte. (if u dun, u r losing out). If u play black, u need kokusho and pyrexian arena. (if not, u oso losing out). and it goes on. all expensive cards heheh  cry.gif  cry.gif

with the release of a newer set (guildpact), the card pool goes larger, and the decks get more variety, though still limited.  huh.gif

however, in extended, the large card pool gives u a chance to go rogue. Of course, there r those staple deck types like psychatog, ravager, goblins, boros deck wins. u may think its almost the same as standard, but its not really. recently, some dude modified the psychatog deck, adding ichorid inside (formerly known as a CHEAP rare). this only shows tat u can really go far wit some 1337 deck building skillz  laugh.gif  laugh.gif

of course this does not mean standard sucks, but i prefer extended more coz u can really go rogue in tournaments without ppl preparing their sideboard to anti u. like not so long ago in an extended tournament, i tried out an old black red deck with some dredge cards. though i didnt make it to the top 8 (10th place out of i-dunno-how-much), it was the satisfaction of fighting ppl wen they go "wat deck is this?" and see them ponder hard on wat to sideboard after 1st match. kekekekke...  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

but current standard cause lots of new deck types as ravnica n guildpacts let u mix n match all the colours more... no doubt there are still some staples cards but u can always opt them out for other cards in ur deck place... i'm using a green black deck but without kokusho n arena lol and its still working fine haha...

extended is still fun also as u can pull out more combos n stuff but at times there are some really broken cards...

the worse are the T1 decks as all are way too broken lol...

lots of standard decks are find without those sought-after cards, if played casually or in your weekly FNM. but go to those main tournament scenes, u r really losing the tempo battle without those tempos.

extended hav lotsa broken cards that CAN be countered. huhuuhahahhehheheheh.....

btw, dun talk bout T1. if u dun hav those early, old cards (alpha, beta, etc), better dun play.

the reason standard is so popular oso is bcoz lotsa new players hav access to the newer cards only, and getting those not-so-older ones can be expensive. but just wait, in a few years, Ravnica players wil be the 'old dudes' in d tournament scenes wen the post-Invasion players get all their cards thrown into the T1 card pool. hahaha... for this format now, with 1 rav starter n 2 guildpact booster, u definitely need to build a deck with 3 main color. choose ur 3 strongest color, and include around 14-18 creatures, 6-10 spells(including accelerator/signet) ,and around 15-17 lands(depend on how many accelerator and the bounce land u include).

tip no1- bounce land is good, tat is 2 land in 1 card, in this slow format, the tempo lost is worth the extra land drop will get.

tip no2- u can cut 1 land for every 2 accelerator(bop, farseek, signet)u put in ur deck, example if u play 2 accelerator n 16 lands, then when u play 4 acce, 15 land is sufficient

tip no3- dont bother playing 1 drop except those with decent ability, such as thoughpicker witch or the elvish skysweeper

tip no4- avoid playing card tat will lose u card advantage, eventhough sometime can gain u card advantage, example, gaze of gorgon, and pump spells such as gather courage (edit: if u play it hav to be very careful of when to use it)

if u hav doubt for some certain card's playbility or how good is it for sealed, pls do ask

to be honest i haven't played magic since the 8th ed and during my 2 year stay in magic i've stayed to playing contructed and have NEVER tried drafting or sealed before. since i'm interested in making a return my friend suggested that i join a sealed tournament held locally here in 2 weeks time. so doing a bit of research first lor smile.gif

thanks for the tips, will keep them in mind notworthy.gif i was wondering if you can give me a summary of the type of cards that would be highly playable in sealed. for example you mentioned bounce and acceleration. also, what would be the best 3 colours to choose? or issit dependant on what i get in packs? thanks again notworthy.gif

actually there is no 3 more powerful color, when i say 3 most powerful color means the 3 most powerful color of wat u opened.

but for combination of 3 color tat can be brought together easily is red white green and white green black. normally these 2 combination will be more powerful la. if u do a bit of study on the guilds of ravnica and guildpact then u will know wat i mean

u can always use apprentice to generate a sealed deck card pool and try to build a deck from there

edit: btw i was at ipoh yesterday for a PTQ sealed deck tourney, lol!

the 3 best color depends ur pack that u open (or the 2 main colour in ur theme deck that u picked and 1 colour of ur choice in the packs u open)
i normally go for green in any deckc ause its the easiest to use besides great mana provider to provide u wit momentum for the game...
never use blue as they require too much timing and it is the hardest to use among the 5 main colors...

dun get apprentice...
get MWS it is way betetr
and they got their own server so u dun even need to use the old ip address connect stuff lol...

actually blue is very good, can gain a lot of card advantage, a lot of tricks, but u need a lot of experience n skills to utilize it.

btw i seldom use MWS, hav to try it sometime, and may i know how can i connect to the MWS server?

edit: quite a big news for every1, Grand Prix KL will be coming soon, around June, and the Grand Prix Trial for GP KL will start 26th March. The format is sealed deck with top 8 booster draft drool.gif . Sud practice more from now! gogogo
