where was the focus point on that picture ? are you sure you got a successful AF lock (green rectangle) ? how far was it between camera and the subject ?

shutter lag could be a possibility but looking at this particular picture bcos the ant is moving vertically and you had a stopped down aperture as long as you got it to focus on the branch/trunk distance it should be quite acceptable. unless the trunk is no straight along the same plane but i doubt it's so.

few options to test :-
a. use the center focus point, half shutter press to AF on the trunk (make sure AF locks on correctly, not in front, not at the back) then wait for ant to be in frame, snap.
b. you could use MF and pre-focus then wait for the ant(s) in frame then snap.

the above assumes, you have chosen exposure which determined a (shutter speed) sufficient to freeze movement of the ant. if u used a flash might simplify this aspect of it ...

please also check whether you were too close for the lens (plus any convertors if u used them). according to olympus e-pl3 faq page, With the MCON-P01 attached, the minimum focusing distance of the lens becomes 24 cm. i dunno what is the min focus distance for kit and 40-150 m.zuiko without the addon.

already did tried that too... same...
i knw the issue dy, most of the time if the subject is small, focusing directly at the tele end 300mm, may hv this focusing issue...
if the subject is larger , no issue at all... to overcome, if this happen, focus on to something larger nearby then focus the actual subject...
or, just zoom out abit an focus at the subject, once got focus then zoom back in to tele end and focus again....

Olympus m4/3 bodies have in-body image stabilization thus no IS on the lenses.

so if used on GX1 (which has no in-body IS) ... you basically don't have IS feature.

The Panasonic 100-300mm lens focuses faster on my EM5 than it does on my GH2 (which my mom now owns). I do have the OIS on the lens shut off and I leave the EM5's IBIS on. I had no problem focusing through pine needles at a less-than-5-inch chipping sparrow, through grass blades at a bee, through marsh grass at an egret-in-flight (which would have been a better shot if I hadn't just turned when I spotted it and hit the shutter button trying to quick capture it. Any error there was me, not the camera.) and a yellowlegs through grass. Though I couldn't focus out the oak seeds on a Northern Parula, I did get a shot of him when he hopped to a branch (although he was still in focus behind the oak seeds, so I included that shot if it would you out). The Barn Swallow shot I took while standing in a slow-moving creek bent awkwardly under a bridge at ISO1600 SOOC JPEG, which I could not do this shot with this lens on my GH2. With more practice, my photos will get better though. I generally set the camera to the center focus point on S-AF the majority of the time. However, having those 35 boxes/regions to choose from when I poke the monitor to take a shot through branches does come in handy. GRIN. Does that help to answer your question? (P.S. For the Barn Swallow, it was dark under the bridge and the light you see in its eye is a result of the creek reflecting sunlight at its face.)

bro i dunno whether my experience applies here or not...
but from my experience from using tele lenses on my Nikon....
usually the cheap teles will have this problem...
dure to the small aperture...somehow they are not able to focus as fast or at all...
but once u step into the realm of f2.8....or at least f4...
even at 600mm there isnt any problem anymore....
brows.gif

again i dunno if this problem can be applied in your situation as well...

Yes, firmware updated...
Did u try focusing the tiny subject at 300mm in the first shot before?...
I noticed if focusing on the 300mm, it will hunt...
But, if focus the same subject and distance below 300mm even at 298mm, it bang on instantly...
