I think people use acetone like an etching agent, it cuts into the plastic so the plastic takes the dye easier. But I just can't stand the idea of the PBT getting dissolved by acetone. Yikes! I used salt and vinegar because I thought it was harmless - when you add both these things, the consistency of the solution becomes a little thicker faster. I don't add much water anyway. Using my method, the dye penetrates the PBT quite a lot. I strongly doubt it will ever fade. It's just like dye sublimation - the legends stay on forever. The more times you dye the keycap, the deeper and richer the colour.  It's not like painting, whereby there is a layer that can peel off. You can try without salt and vinegar... just be prepared to wait a looooong time. I believe if you have a lot of patience, you can dye your caps without too much heat and without added stuff (acetone, vinegar, salt).

PBT is pretty durable but it's still possible to warp the thing if the temperature gets too high. So be careful. Done properly, dyeing PBT should not affect the structure of the plastic.

Your theory about the small holes created by Acetone makes sense - once the surface layer of the plastic is destroyed, it may attract dirt and other stuff. To my mind, the dyeing process causes the dye to penetrate the plastic (don't ask me how) without affecting the integrity of the plastic.

iMav gave an update - he's had some serious hardware issues related to the RAM. Not sure when the problem will be resolved because downtime and rollbacks seem to be quite frequent. Posts and PMs are going missing. I don't mind losing posts and I back up my PMs so I still have all the important info with me.

It's quite frustrating with the rollback.
Chip in some for the donation. If anyone uses it a lot, should consider contributing to the geekhack server costs

Flaky hardware has been removed and will be coming back with me tomorrow. Replacement hardware has going through significant burn in and testing to ensure stability.

Definitely some bad ram...not sure what else. I know that this past hardware upgrade is definitely the worst upgrade in GH history.

if I put all the keycaps in a seal bottle with all the dye with salt and vinegar for a month or so, It will stick permanently?

The donation was used to buy the bad RAM. Hopefully it's alright now.

I don't know why you have to be so negative about the donation. I don't think anyone, iMav included, would be pleased with roll back after roll back.

No one who manages their own website(s) wants to see any problem. After you deal with the technical issues, you still have to face angry users (even those who use the site for free). I manage my own VPS, so I'm speaking from personal experience.

why not they just find a hosting company

For the spacebar you already have one, and it doesn't matter it fit or not,
because even for the printed one it doesn't have any printing on it.

@kaysa - I think you will need some heat. You can forget about the salt and vinegar but not the heat... someone once suggested I put the whole lot in the microwave. I told them they can go and try with their own keycaps but I want control over what I do. Even if I spoil the keycaps, it's got to be on my terms.

what is the correct temperature for dying the ABS then?
and for how long? you kept your PBT at 90c for 6 hours?
