Hitzfeld Surprised At Shock Home Defeat Bayern trainer Ottmar Hitzfeld declared himself surprised at the defeat and the level of performance shown by his side. It was as much to do with an overall lack of ambition, as the fact that they simply caved in in the final 20 minutes.

Hitzfeld Surprised At Shock Home Defeat

A wonder goal from Rafael Van der Vaart and another from former Bayern striker Paolo Guerrero have deepened the crisis at Bayern Munich, and improved Hamburg's chances of Bundesliga survival.

The defeat and the subsequent win for Stuttgart away at Möenchengladbach has extended the gap between 3rd and 4th place to an almost unassailable 7 points.

After last week's 2-0 defeat to Stuttgart, a win and a good performance was expected against the North Germans, and Hitzfeld looked understandably displeased.

"It is naturally a huge surprise that the performance of some players was not up to scratch," he said after the game.

"We knew we found ourselves in a difficult situation, and that we only had a small chance of qualifying for the Champions League. It was a dangerous situation, as we needed every player to put in a top performance.

"We started badly, but luckily took the lead against the run of play. In the second half we started to control the game more, but our level of performance was not enough.

"We lost too much possession in midfield. It was a bad game and a bad day for us- bearing in mind the Stuttgart result. The team did not show the professional attitude that I expected."

Bayern President Franz Beckenbauer added to the criticism: "Overall Bayern were simply not good enough. He also repeated the calls for changes made after last week's defeat to Stuttgart.

"We find ourselves in a situation where changes have to be made. The team has to be radically changed- that much is clear."

The problem, of course, is that Bayern Munich will now have to settle for a Uefa Cup place next season, something that will make it all the more tough to attract top players as they look to recover lost glory.

I know Bayern sucks this season and most probably not going to play in UCL next season, but don't forget to watch the delay match at Astro 80, tomorrow 11.30PM.

Bayern: We want Toni !

Bayern Munich President Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed that his club are interested in signing Fiorentina ace Luca Toni.

The World Cup winner looks set to end his Viola adventure at the end of the season and he has been paired with the Bundesliga giants.

"We definitely need new blood and Toni would be a great signing," said Beckenbauer to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Toni guarantees goals. He has character, helps the team and is a special guy. I really hope he will join us."

Kahn Given The Weekend Off As Hitzfeld Surveys His Squad Oliver Kahn has a free afternoon this Saturday. The Bayern Munich number one will not feature in the game against embattled Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Kahn Given The Weekend Off As Hitzfeld Surveys His Squad

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has confirmed that Michael Rensing will start in goal, but he has been quick to point out that this does not in any way affect Oliver Kahn next season. He remains Bayern's first choice keeper.

Rensing has stepped into Kahn's boots already this season - most notably in the 2-2 draw in the Champions League quarter-final against Milan.

Said Hitzfeld on the club's official website: "I have decided that Oliver Kahn will remain at home and that Michael Rensing will start in goal, he deserves it."

Because Bayern are guaranteed their place in the UEFA Cup next season, Hitzfeld may be tempted to use a number of other reserves in the game.

Injuries to Willy Sagnol, Lukas Podolski, Valerien Ismael, Owen Hargreaves as well as suspensions for Mark Van Bommel and Hassan Salihamidzic mean that players from the fringes of the squad may be given their chance.

"It is a chance for those players who are always on the bench, and have trained well to show that they deserve a place and can be relied upon," he continued.

"I want the team to give everything until the end of the season. It's about honour and pride and we want to finish the season on a high note" he added.

Alongside young squad members Mats Hummels and Stefan Fürstner, there may even be places on the bench for amateurs Stefano Celozzi and Louis Ngwat-Mahop who have been training with the first team since Tuesday. Roque Santa Cruz und Andreas Görlitz look set for a place in the starting eleven.

Mönchengladbach will be facing a Bayern side quite different from what they would normally expect

Borussia M'gladbach 1-1 Bayern Munich

MONCHENGLADBACH, May 5 (Bundesliga) - Bayern Munich's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League are all but dead after they were held by bottom club Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.

Roy Makaay put Bayern ahead in the 12th minute but Peer Kluge answered for the already-relegated hosts in the 50th minute.

The draw leaves Ottmar Hitzfeld's team in fourth place on 54 points with two games remaining - six points less than Werder Bremen, who occupy the third and final Champions League spot. Bremen visit Hertha Berlin on Sunday.

Gladbach had their relegation fate already sealed coming into the game. It was more about honour at Borussia Park, and Jos Luhukay's team managed to collect their second point in seven games.

With all the talk this week in the Bayern camp about Italian striker Luca Toni coming and maybe even Miroslav Klose, Dutch striker Makaay remained quiet. He let his play on the pitch do the talking on Saturday, scoring his 15th goal of the season in the 12th minute.

Ali Karimi beat the offside trap with a through-ball which Makaay ran onto and slotted past Christofer Heimeroth into the far corner with a low shot.

A report in German daily Bild has suggested that Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness has midfielder Deco on the top of his summer agenda.

The Bavarians are also looking to bring back Ze Roberto on a two year deal, and the Brazilian is open to the move.

"That idea pleases me and I'm delighted that Bayern want me again," the 32-year-old told Munchner Abendzeitung.

As for Deco, Bayern and Hitzfeld were already interested in him in 2004, but the Portuguese chose to move to Barcelona instead.

There have already been reports linking Deco with a move to Milan, and though the Portuguese has publicly forbidden his agent from speaking to clubs, it is understood that he will be willing to take on a fresh challenge at the end of the season.

Hitzfeld seems to be ready to re-activate his interest, and it is believed that an enquiry was made when Hoeness was in Barcelona for a G14 summit.

The big problem, of course, seems to be the lack of Champions League action next season.

Hitzfeld Finally Finds Something To Cheer Bayern Munich finally have something to cheer after ending a series of three league games without a victory.

Hitzfeld Finally Finds Something To Cheer

Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had demanded a win against Cottbus and his wishes were granted through goals from Roy Makaay, Daniel Van Buyten and Roque Santa Cruz.

With all the attention on the top three and the battle for the Bundesliga title, it must have hurt Bayern Munich that they were only involved in a largely irrelevant game.

However the performance pleased manager Hitzfeld after the disappointment of the previous games.

"I am happy that we could placate our fans a little," he said. "We played as a unit and it now our aim to finish the season respectably and to put in another good performance.

"We played well today and dominated our opponents. We were not troubled in defence so the Bayern fans can be pleased."

Makaay and Van Buyten set the tone with goals in the first half itself, before Santa Cruz wrapped up a game Bayern dominated both in terms of possession and attempts on goal.

Midfielder Mark Van Bommel was also pleased with the performance: "You saw today that we can play good football, but we have not shown that enough this season. That is why we are so many points behind the leaders."

Bayern Munich Sign Marcell Jansen

Bayern Munich have officially confirmed that they have signed full back Marcell Jansen from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

An announcement was expected after Jansen had left for Munich to complete a medical, and things seem to have gone according to plan.

The terms of the agreement with relegated M'gladbach are not known, but what is, is that the promising left back arrives at the Säbener Strasse on a four year deal.

At 6ft 3in (1.91 m), the 21-year-old is one of the taller full-backs in the business, but can use his feet very well.

Having come up through the ranks at M'gladbach, he was handed a first team chance by d*** Advocaat in December 2004. He has since played most of his 73 Bundesliga games at left-back, but has also been used as a left sided midfielder.

The youngster was rewarded for his overall efforts with a call-up to the national team in 2005 by then coach Jurgen Klinsmann, at the young age of 19.

He made his international debut as a substitute on September 3, 2005, against Slovakia in Bratislava, and then became the youngest player in Germany's World Cup squad last summer.

He has scored 5 goals in 73 Bundesliga games, and has 14 international caps thus far.

Prior to his move to the Allianz Arena, he had also been scouted by Arsenal and Barcelona, and pursued by Hamburger SV. He becomes Bayern's fourth signing this season, after Hamit Alintop, Jan Schlaudraff and Ernesto Sosa.
