MUNICH, March 11 (Bundesliga) - Bayern Munich missed a hatful of opportunities before having to settle for a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.

After beating Real Madrid in the Champions League in midweek, Bayern were in the same hungry mood in the Bundesliga.

But after going ahead through Lukas Podolski after just seven minutes, they were unable to kill off the game.

They were punished for their wastefulness when Hugo Almeida took Bremen's only chance of the game to earn Thomas Schaaf's side a point in the 66th minute.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld left Roy Makaay on the bench with Claudio Pizarro taking his place alongside Podolski in attack, while Bremen were without their top striker Miroslav Klose, who pulled out with a back strain just before kick-off.

Bayern were ahead after just ten seconds against Real Madrid in midweek, and they did not have to wait much longer before going ahead against Bremen.

Seven minutes were on the clock when Podolski stroked the ball into an empty net as Bayern ripped the Bremen defence apart.

Bastian Schweinsteiger threaded the ball through to Mark van Bommel, who had attracted Torsten Frings, Naldo and goalkeeper Tim Wiese to him, freeing up room in the centre for Podolski.

All the van Bommel had to do was find him, and he did so with the outside of his right boot, allowing the Germany international to net his third goal in as many Bundesliga games.

Bayern never released their foot from the accelerator after taking an early lead and were unfortunate not to double their advantage on a number of occasions.

Owen Hargreaves saw his shot punched away by Wiese while Podolski's effort was deflected behind off the face of the Bremen goalkeeper before Schweinsteiger headed against the outside of the post as the home side dominated.

The Germany midfielder then hit the underside of the crossbar with a 25-yard free-kick which had Wiese beaten.

Podolski had the next real chance early in the second half, but his shot was saved by the legs of Wiese.

Bayern's failure to make their dominance count was soon to be punished, though.

Oliver Kahn was too slow in coming from his line as Daniel van Buyten and Lucio attempted to shepherd the ball back to him, allowing Almeida to get a leg in and lob the ball goalbound.

Markus Rosenberg chased the ball over the line, but the Portuguese striker claimed the goal despite Rosenberg's unintentional flick-header on the line.

Bayern then wasted another glorious opportunity to go back ahead as Hasan Salihamidzic placed his shot wide of the far post when faced with just Wiese to beat.

Podolski also could not direct a shot inside the post after Lucio waltzed his way through six Bremen players to create another opportunity for the wasteful home side.

In the end, Bayern's failure to score more than just the one goal meant they had to settle for a draw, which leaves them six points behind Bundesliga leaders Schalke.

That would normally only bring a one-match ban but UEFA said in a statement on its website it was doubling the punishment by enforcing a deferred sanction for the offensive gestures he made to the crowd in the first leg. The

Dutchman was originally only fined for those gestures after his goal at the end of the first leg in Madrid, while given a one-match ban that was suspended for 12 months.

The first leg of the quarter-final will be in Milan on April 3, with the return in Munich on April 11.

German FC Bayern Munich has been a hive of activity in recent weeks. The club switched coaches at the beginning of February, before the team began playing catch-up in the Bundesliga and sealed a berth in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Former world-class striker and club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge referring to Bayern's three new comers said Jose Ernesto Sosa, Jan Schlaudraff and Hamit Altintop would fit in well for new season. He noted that they had brought them in because they knew they're losing players too.

"Mehmet Scholl is retiring, Hasan Salihamidzic is off to Juventus, and we're not extending Ali Karimi's contract. In this sense, we were obliged to do something."

He referred to other changes in the squad, but not named the players. Rummenigge expressed concerns about best players' bad image over the Bundesliga.

"We're certainly prepared to invest considerable sums, but unfortunately the Bundesliga doesn't have a particularly good image any more. The leagues in England, Spain and Italy are more attractive to the best players."

Wrath Of Kahn Means Bayern Keeper Now Suspended For AC Milan Match

Oliver Kahn will miss Bayern Munich's next Champions League match.

The mouth of German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has gotten him in trouble. Kahn has been fined and suspended by UEFA for improper conduct, meaning he will miss Bayern Munich's first leg quarterfinal Champions League match at AC Milan on April 3.

The 37-year-old apparently insulted one of the medical officials charged with screening the player's urine following Bayern's 2-1 win over Real Madrid a couple weeks ago. Kahn and teammate Lucio were selected randomly for post-match doping tests. The Brazilian defender also got in trouble, but was fined not suspended. Kahn's fine is for 20,000 Swiss francs; Lucio must pay 10,000 Swiss francs.

Kahn has sent a letter of apology to UEFA, and he already apologized publicly on the Bayern Munich Web site.

"It was a stupid situation. I'm still extremely sorry for that, but it was the fourth time in a row we'd had a doping control after a match - and would you believe it, I was picked out of 18 possible candidates for the fourth time," said Kahn, who explained it took him about two hours to ingest enough fluids after the match so that he could produce a urine sample.

"I took my container to the doctor, but he said he hadn't been watching me. I had to do it all again," added Kahn.
"I was knackered, angry and upset. The way I let my frustration get the better of me wasn't right."

Goals from Roy Makaay (3) and Hasan Salihamidzic (79) earned the Bavarians a relatively comfortable win to bring Ottmar Hitzfeld's men to within six points of the leaders.
