Milan were too good for us - Hitzfeld

Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld admitted AC Milan had too much class and quality as his side bowed out of the Champions League after a 2-0 home defeat.

Clarence Seedorf fires home the opener

'It's a very big disappointment,' he said.

'We got a 2-2 draw in Milan and we had great hope that we would advance. But we always knew that Milan can win away from home.

'We were unlucky not to score first. It may have been different then.

'They got a lot of confidence from those two goals and they have great players. We tried everything and we went out fighting, but Milan was clearly the better team.'

AC Milan will try to salvage national pride when they play Manchester United.

I think Bayern did play a good game yesterday. The first 30 minutes and the 2nd half Bayern nearly score as there are 2 great chances like the one from Christian Lell and Lukas Podolski's attemp. Atleast Bayern have made and play well for the Champion League this year!!l. Bayern already made a surprise against Real what last time? blush.gif

Lets cheer up fof the progress n move on to BUndesliga. tongue.gif
ps: I really wish to see atleast semis..2-2 *sigh*

Bayern won 2-0 against Laverkusen!.. Atleast it ease our sadness after the Milan game. tongue.gif

The result means the Bundesliga's top four all won at the weekend, leaving Bayern still in fourth on 53 points from 29 matches, but with a huge opportunity to claim a coveted Champions League qualifying berth next week with a win on their travels to VfB Stuttgart, two points ahead of the Bavarians in third.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen

MUNICH, April 15 (Bundesliga) - Freshly eliminated from the Champions League, Bayern Munich took a step towards qualifying for next year's competition with a home victory against Bayer Leverkusen that keeps their title challenge alive.

Mark van Bommel opened the scoring for Munich in the 30th minute and his fellow Dutchman Roy Makaay doubled the lead for the defending champions two minutes after the break.

Andriy Voronin got Leverkusen back into the game with his goal in the 61st minute but the equaliser proved elusive.

Bayern moved to 53 points - just two points behind Stuttgart in the race for third place and a spot in the Champions League qualification round - while they are six points behind leaders Schalke with five matches to play.

The Bavarian giants face Stuttgart in what could be a season-defining game next week.

Leverkusen, without German national team players Bernd Schneider and Stefan Kiessling, missed a chance to dislodge Nurnberg from the second UEFA Cup spot.

Bayern started with the first top chance as Lukas Podolski struck the crossbar from 18 yards after 12 minutes.

Van Bommel then gave Munich the lead at the half-hour mark after running onto a long ball from Philipp Lahm and looping his shot over advancing Leverkusen keeper Rene Adler.

Karim Haggui and Fredrik Stenman failed to clear the ball off the line.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's team doubled the lead two minutes after the break through Makaay.

Hasan Salihamidzic played in Makaay, whose first-time shot beat Adler.

Voronin got Leverkusen up and running after 61 minutes with a volley from a tight angle that beat Oliver Kahn and went in off the post.

Van Bommel nearly restored the two-goal lead just a minute later, but his shot rattled the left upright.

Leverkusen went close after 70 minutes but Kahn did well to hold a cross with Paul Freier lurking.

bayern-munich-1-2-hamburger-sv video clips

Updated: April 28, 2007, 4:51 PM UK
Bayern Munich 1-2 Hamburg SV
PA

MUNICH, April 28 (Bundesliga) - Bayern Munich need a miracle to play in the Champions League next season after losing their second successive Bundesliga game, this time at home to 10-man Hamburg.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's side were never at their best, despite taking a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to Claudio Pizarro's 35th-minute goal.

Hamburg levelled with a wonder-strike from Rafael van der Vaart in the 71st minute before super sub Paolo Guerrero crushed his former side with the winner in the 77th minute.

There was a red card for Thimothee Atouba in the last minute, but Bayern could not salvage a draw.

The win practically saves the northerners from the drop and leaves Bayern almost certainly out of the Champions League next term.

Hamburg started well. With Bayern target Van der Vaart pulling the strings, the visitors led an early assault on Oliver Kahn's goal, forcing six corners inside the first 15 minutes.

Soon, they had the first chance of the game too with Ivica Olic threading David Jarolim through.

The Czech midfielder rounded Kahn, but Martin Demichelis raced back to block the shot.

A Van der Vaart free-kick then skimmed the outside of Kahn's post before Demichelis made another goal-line clearance from Juan Pablo Sorin's low driven effort.

Bayern struggled to make it out of their own half, and the first time they did, they scored.

Ali Karimi, Roy Makaay and Hasan Salihamidzic all had shots blocked with the final rebound falling to Pizarro who netted from close range.

Hamburg rallied and Sorin's far-post diving header forced Kahn into another save before Atouba's effort from distance was tipped over.

Bayern had the chance to double their lead just after an hour when Makaay headed the ball down for Mark van Bommel, but goalkeeper Frank Rost saved well.

Bayern were punished for not taking that chance when a touch of magic from Van der Vaart brought the visitors level.

The Dutchman lifted the ball in the air with one touch and then volleyed it past Kahn from 20 yards.

There was more to come as former Bayern striker Guerrero put Hamburg ahead with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Rost provided the long ball forward which the Peruvian chased before finding the corner, refusing to celebrate a goal against his former team.

A second yellow card for Atouba followed but Huub Stevens and his men took the points home.
