mornings buddy!

Maybe you can take this website as a reference, but always take everything with a pinch and salt
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/03/d800-lens-selectionThey have the widest range of lenses! Too bad they do not test the lens both wide open and 2-3 stops above...
Afternoon. Thanks

Not going to smack talk but your friend doesnt know about much about Nikon's move on a high MP body and to be frank, Nikon lenses can sustain the high MP.
D800 is a specific camera for still shooters but heck, you can use it for other purpose too. NIKKOR pro lenses reportedly to be able to cope with the high MP.
D800 produce a very detailed rendition. If compared to D4, D4 looks soft @ 100% while D800 @ 100% looks crispy sharp. Tested with 300mm f/2.8 AF-I, 80-200mm AF-S, and 70-210mm AF-D
Though I didnt have the D800 with me, I cant share the comparison pics but I can have this video to support my comparison..
http://youtu.be/5g65ANaVnL4When Canon came out 5D Mark II.. its clearly that Canon is directing themselves into videography so MP chase or not, each makers have their own goals and direction now.
Well it does seem that canon could not do any wrong recently. build in flash triggers. 61 af points etc etc etc etc etc etc. Anyways I'll just wait and see whats coming replacement of d300/s looks like. decided not to even debate this non issue with him.

Nikon pro glass has no problem resolving the high MP
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2012/03/d-resolution-testsI once read that those glass will only start to have problem out-resolving the sensor after 75MP based on some lp/mm thingy . . .
Interesting link

There is a bit of truth in it. Use the 85mm f1.4 lens and use the 28-300mm lens at 85mm and I am sure you are getting 2 images in different sharpness.
Only Nikon top of the range lenses will give you fantastic image quality with the D800.
One thing that makes me perk up is the fact that you mention of downsizing a 36mp camera to 12mp. Please pardon my ignorance but why wouldayone want to do that? Why don't just get the D7000 then?
Downsizing for comparison and debating purposes only .

But I didnt that wont be a problem for me, as my d300 is still serving me very faithfully.
