BTW, what do you want to buy in the first place...certain place got their certain price range.. Bro KK usually shop at Klang as he's from Klang Bro KK, Do you mean P.Jemor at the borderline of M'sian~Indo? Be extra careful there as there is TNI(Tentera Nasional Indonesia) and the island belongs to Indo. When are you going? What is the targetted species? |

Bro Voon, you can take bro KK's advise, which is quite within your range
Of the 3 models suggested by bro KK, i strongly suggest for Abu Cardinel new series. very sturdy reel with alloy body..very very solid.. |

Bro Voon,
Thanks for the compliment. Can share with us, what do you intend to use with BC? For toman casting? or trolling biggies?? If for toman, you might want to use low profile...like Banax Armis, Shimano Chronarch 100A, Calcutta 50, Daiwa Procaster Z, Team Daiwa X. Strongly suggesting something that is within RM200. You can check out Tomman X(RM50~60), Banax Armis(RM140+-) If you're going for trolling...you can consider Abu Six Star, TGC and suchs...extremely reliable The main reason for asking is about your casting ability. Abu are not that good for casting ability, as it's heavier too... |

good luck....someone kena poison liao... For everyone's benefit and knowledge Low profile VS round BC Low Profile ![]() Low profile is good for light lures, but also depending on the weight of the spool. The first easy kickoff of the spool to spin ensures the ability to cast light lure. There are 2 types of spool, which has it's own pro and cons. Shortshaft spool like daiwas and the new Abu Revo STX, totally disengages itself from the tension knob and pinion gear to ensure the ability to spin longer. This is to minimise the friction of the spool while casting. See this: Short shaft spool ![]() The other type is long shaft spool like the Shimanos and many brands out there in the market. To compare between these 2 spools, usually the long shaft spool are lighter to ensure the first kickoff is easy. Either way, both spool serves the purpose and works well. See this: Long shaft spool Test: Unclutch the reel making the spool free in casting. Use your thumb, and give it a mild push. See how long the spool spins. The longer the spool spins, it means the ability to cast light lures better. Example: Shimano Scorpion can spins for easily 10secs and more Shimano MG can spins for about 15~20secs and more Shimano Calcutta50 can spins for 4secs+- and modified is about 15secs Well that's on the ability to cast light lures.... Let's look on the drag system Drag ability of low profile is always lower(except for the new Abu Revo with 24lb drag) than the round baitcast or spinning set. The key here is the ability to perform a smooth drag. Test Lock the drag in comfortable tension. Hold the spool with the thumb, and at the same time try to retrieve/crank the line.... Example: Calcutta 50 is 4lb drag only Scorpion is 6lb Team Daiwa X is about 8lb Abu Revo is 24lb !!! Recently landed a sailfish with such a small feature! Now, the rest of the features like number of bearings are just for the smoothness of the cranking. There is usually 2 bearings on the spool itself to ensure the smoothness of the spool. See this: 2 shielded bearing on the 2 end of the spool(the other bearing is on the shell of the reel). ![]() The difference is, possible that the longshaft spool have 3 bearings. On the cover shell, spool itself and the tip of the shaft. Either that or the tip of the shaft bearing is a copper shim(however it can be upgraded) For short shaft, it's definitely 2bearings only that is supporting the spool. On the spool itself and on the cover shell. continue..................... |

the last part is on the braking system.
Braking system is to control the spining motion of the spool so that it doesnt overrun. Once overrun it will cause CBH(read: CharBeeHoon aka birdnest) There are 2 types of braking system as current. Centrifugal braking system ![]() Notice the small white pins on the edge of the holder(which has 6 brakes). These small little pieces of brake shoes are intended to control the spool to avoid overrun. Some has 2 pins(abu, mitchell), some has 4(shimano) and most of them has 6(most of the reels) Shimano has a better braking systems currently which has more combinational that you can figure of. Starting off with SVS system(calcutta, chronarch), then 4X4SVS(Scorpion, MG) and the latest one is 4X8SVS system. All the systems here are to provide better casting distance and control for different weight of lures. Let's move to Magnetic braking systems Magnetic brake system uses the force of magnet to control the overrun. In such way there are no friction being produced. Unlike centrifugal, it's meant to rub the brake shoe to the brake ring areas to slow the spool down. Note the 8 pieces of magnetic in the picture above. These are the replacement of the brake shoes, where the magnets will move forward nearer to the spool, or move backward which is furthur from the spool. If it's nearer, meaning that the magnetic force will pull the spool resulting the spool spins slower, and furthur, meaning that the force is lesser to pull the spool. However, as per current, there are 3 types of magnetic braking systems See pic: Magnetic force implied on the spool See pic: magnetic force implied between the rim(which is attached to the spool) See pic: similar system as above, however the rim has a spring too move forward or backward Practically that's all you need to know for low profile mechanism. You can always prompt me a questions if you have any. Till next time TUNE in for ROUND BC mechanism...happy casting |
