wider might not the correct term, but what i getting at is that some corners you dont have to brake and shift down, just it is adequate just to shift down a gear. for example the 150r at the suzuka circuit can be driven at full speed with the correct gear ratio
end story it is track-based and comes down to try-and-error usually if a track got many tight corners i tend to use short gear ratio for lower half and make it longer for higher gear, but not too wide. the wider, the slower car accelerates after gear shift due to torque lose.
for example, my McLaren GT LM top at 343 km/h at stock gear ratio at nurburgring. I max the final drive, change gear 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 to short, and set longer ratio for 4-5, 5-6, 6-7. top speed is 325-330 km/h but clocked faster lap time. it's different story if I slipstream another faster car
keep in mind:
- short/close gear ratio give you higher torque between shifting, thus higher acceleration at the cost of lower top speed for those gear (and overall).
- high/wide gear ratio cost you lower torque between shifting, thus slower acceleration, but yield higher top speed for those gear (and overall).
- take into account highest top speed one could achieve at specific circuit, try get the top speed 1st by adjusting final gear ratio.
- then, while driving, take note of car acceleration, rpm and gear at corners (also how car behaves), try adjusting them to suit on those corners.
- try all those in auto mode. after nothing to do in auto mode, then move to manual mode...minor adjustment may required.
- happy drive!!
usually i try to get gears for cornering at 3 and 4, sometimes 2. gear 4-7 reserved for sprinting on long straights. final gear usually set for slipstream on straights...but rarely occurs.
* if possible, make sure gear lines are overlap with one another, else, acceleration after shifting may suffer so much until the engine achieve desired torque again...could take very very long at higher gear.
