I found something "strange" about powering my RPi...

RPi is running Raspbian Wheezy Oct-28 version

My setup, I've a 2-port 2000mA USB power adapter that I power up a 4-port USB hub via mini-power socket...

The connection is USB Power Adapter to 4-port USB Hub power socket then mini-USB to the regular USB port on the RPi (without the micro-USB)..

The RPi seems to be running fine without needing any connection to the micro-USB connection...

I got the Asus USB-N10 Wireless adapter working when plugged into this 4-port hub..

This setup save me a micro-usb cable and much more simple power connection to the USB hub and RPi...

USB port is rated for 250mA ? or some boosting it up to 500mA.

Powering the pi via the USB host port... hmmm the ethernet/usb chip already is pretty hot without the high 700mA pi back coursing thru it?

Do report back how long you can run it without any stability issues.

(it may just turn out to work... but not recommended as a lot of problems might pop up later on?)

edit * to add, I once tried to measure the voltage across the USB port's 5v pins. Turns out everytime i measure it, it will reset the Pi... I think I may have shorted it out ...

Check your power adapter's output voltage (as well as when plugged into the Pi).
It's probably borderline case.

In my case, t1 and t2 voltage turns out fine. I measured the usb port's voltage because i wanted to know which is positive and negative. without butchering cables.

Anyhow, I think it the reason it reset was because I stuck the probes and it might have shortciruited the pi's usb line.

Hopefully, no real damage done.

Since the psu is was measured at 5.2V at zero load. So its not like it shot up to 5.5 or >

I'd say it's easier (and safer) checking the pin-outs on the web.

But it is totally addictive when you have a red and black probe with pointy ends, your urge to stick it into everything surpass all logic.

Haha...

I am a happy element14 customer.

*I even cross shop some RS's components for electronic stuff.

I have only heared satisfaction for element14 with regards to Pi.

Payment hiccup with Public Bank debit card, finally paid through Maybank Nov 1.
Got call telling me Pi would be only available in three weeks.
I got the rest of my order within two days.
Now just waiting for my Pi. smile.gif

Ordered HDMI-to-DVI and micro USB cable from ebay last week.

Not the cheapest but looks to be quite robust with ferrite bead.

Ebay HDMI-to-DVI cable

[Edit]
uh-oh. I just noticed the product description is wrong. Better check first before buying.

Dude, i think this is the power draw back from the hub to Pi.
It may cause damage in long term.
