When there is insufficient juice from the power source, Pi will just power down and try to power up again, resulting in an endless on-and-off cycle.

yeah, this is another side effect.

so if the power is inadequate, it will only cause Pi to shutdown..
guess I'm ok since I didn't face any shutdown issue so far.. but the interface for the openelec seem like a bit lagging..

the funny thing is.. I use a 8GB sandisk card.. after I format it n install with the openelec, windows will show only 1GB space.. any idea why?

That's because different file system. The one you see in windows is the boot file system which
is in (FAT/FAT32)

The system partition is on default (EXT3/EXT4)... you can view that using a ext file system reader in windows.

From the way u asked, it so obvious u never bother to check the raspberry pi wiki page itself.

Using Pi for any GUI such as Debian lxde, XBMC and OpenELEC will have quite a significant lag of up to several seconds. Don't forget that basically it could be just as powerful as your mobile phones. It is no where near the performance of any HTPC.

haiz.. nowadays phones are powerful as well.. quadcore lagi..

Can someone explain to me how the two diodes (D1, D2) here protect the circuit?

Also why the 1N4008 since the voltages involved her are so low.
Won't the 1N4001 do as well?

I know diodes only allow one way flow of current.
What I don't get is how it works in this circuit.

I think it's clear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode#Over-voltage_protection

It's to protect the circuit so it never go beyond the 5v spec of the pi

It looks like its to protect against reverse polarity.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW, I'm planning to build this circuit (minus the transformer parts).
That's why I'm asking.
