As more and more games are on Origin, and more importantly, they are not on Steam, or at least some DLC are not available on Steam, I think its time to discuss about Origin. For those who are new to Origin.

Link:
Origin Store --> Malaysian saw it in SGD as oppose as MYR or USD.

When it comes to updating the game, Origin sucks so bad.

But I still love Origin, if compared to Steam.

My personal opinion though.

Things are alot more expensive in Origin compare to Steam because lack of discount compare to steam. I think the few advantages are that it is a EA dedicated shop with some exclusive DLCs and its usage of Singapore Dollar instead of USD.

I wish they have a voice chat system in the origin client though :/

Play with friends, it's always fun. LOL

Btw, not really like Origin tho.
If you want discount, go Amazon. Recently got CnC4 and ME2 for $5 each.
Also Darkspore for $13

Believe me when I say this, EA don't promise. They can scrape Origin anytime they want since it's still Beta. They use the platform to test market.

Given choices, I'll rather put my money in Gabe's pocket than EA.

Neither did Gabe promise that they won't screw you over when he suddenly has a change of heart.

Personally, I'd be more safe using Origin since I know they'll screw me at some point.

Because as it is now, I have a shitload of games on Steam and if Gabe decides to do a Kotick, I've just lost nearly 600 USD in games.

Origin Store lack of big sales like steam, however, amazon has a lot of EA games on sales there that could be activated on origin - no complain.
however, the origin client lacks a clean backup/restore function like steam, that i no rike.
and yea, when starting origin, the pc will freeze for a sec there, but no login issue.

go to settings and note the game install directory. you can just backup that folder whenever you want to reformat your pc and Origin will automatically detect the game is installed when you install origin in the same directory again. I also do this with steam but for steam i need to install the client, exit, copy back backup and run steam again. If i reinstall steam to the same folder with the backup already there it will delete it for some reason, something that origin won't do thankfully.

Also Origin has sales but mostly region specific. I got NFS Shift II for 5 euro 2 weeks ago

Origin don't have proper backup system. That copy paste folder isn't proper, unlike Steam.

I still find no problem with using Steam backup to restore my games back.
In one way, it's a clean install than copy paste the entire files and folders to a fresh hard disk.

Actually what STEAM is doing is the same as you copying the whole folder and pasting it back, so "proper" is not really an apt way to describe it. And usually I don't even have to do copy and paste with Origin as I always install the game in a seperate disk, and just redirect Origin there whenever I reinstall Windows. Can't do that with Steam since it will delete all the files inside there.

So your definition of "backup" is "copy paste"?

The reason why there's a backup is to do another copy, and what Steam have done is implementing the backup system in their platform, encrypting the files and reducing the file size.
For example, reducing the file size of 4GB to 2GB backup files.

Tell me if that was exactly the same as copy paste.

Anyway, it's up to personal preferences.
Some people just prefer to copy paste, but for me. If it's a clean window reinstall. I would prefer the game I install can be as clean as possible as well.

The only way to get a full clean installation is to redownload the whole game and reinstall again without using the backup you make. Whatever it is, the backup is still the files that are originally in your computer, although the only stuffs that get "dirty" are your config files, which usually are situated elsewhere like in My Documents or Users folder. Unless you manage to muck up the installations with addons or mods, but IIRC whenever STEAM backups your file it will retain whatever you have changed (my so called STEAM "backup" of my F1 2010 folder still has a file that I modded) thus it's kinda moot

And yes, in computer term, backup and restore is copying your original file to another location and repasting it back when you need it, wether or not you are encrypting/compressing/splitting. Altho what I am doing is just telling Steam and Origin that "hey, I already have those files in my PC, just use them". Considering that STEAM is nearing 200GB and Origin is nearly 40GB I hardly want to install them in the same HDD as my Windows (a puny 60GB). But the fact still remains that you can still backup Origin, which is the point of my earlier post.

try: after i click on the origin.exe, within that short time if i try to do sth else, like resizing a windows, etc, it is not responsive. but for a split second only. all other program don't have this problem. but for 1 sec, i can wait.

my dragon age: origins directory is inside C:\programdata\ (the path of my installer under the Settings) but my newer games are inside c:\program files\origin games.

and yup, i know i can just copy pasta, doing that now actually. and i have no problem the way origin handle new game (put them all inside a single folder), but for older game, they appear in other folder. and what if i forgot where the game folder shud go in the future when i wan to restore the game and play? for steam, each time i download a game, i know where it goes to, each time i use the backup function, i know where the backup files go to, etc. with origin, i cant be sure.

i am not debating or bashing origin, in fact i believe 1 was one of the first ppl to use it and try to promote it in steam thread ><

PS: there's an old game that i downloaded but din found the 'installer folder' in either location.. nid to think back what game is that...

don't get it.. as long as it's not the host, the game should remain isn't? and the slot should be open.. so even if u start with 3, the 4th can still join mid game

I try activate my legacy games (Mass Effect , Crysis Maximum Edition)but it did not work. EA account and Origin account is the same right?
*
both title work for me mass effect & crysis & crysis warhead, activated my copy few days ago

not sure why did't work for you rclxub.gif

or it could be that your mass effect & crysis ultimate edition key is not from 2009 batch

here all the title i try activating using this link https://activate.ea.com/gameactivation.do and all works

[attachmentid=2696157]

try this two links, if both did't work for you then you need to contact ea customer support via email and ask them to manually add those games to your origin account

https://activate.ea.com/applyentitlement.do
https://activate.ea.com/activategame.do

ur speed doesn't matter... it's the connection stability
just abit of packet loss is enough to disconnect u...
nvr liked p2p connections.. but then again, it has its own merit as well... meh

is there a 3% international transaction fee?
this transaction fee is what's stopping me from purchasing directly from origin and steam
but then again.. buying from retailers has its benefits as well

if it's paypal, then the fee is there
3 or 3.5%, can't remember the exact amount. I've been to some online trading seminar before, did some Q&A with paypal.

nope, that fee is on consumer end unless steam or whoever is kind enough to take the charges upon themselves
only the 3% charges for credit card is charged to seller <- and by right, it cannot be charged to consumer, but ppl still do it due to their low profit margin

I see nice info tho. After reading user agreement, the fee is added at the exchange rate so it is not easy to notice.

So Mass Effect 3 is coming out and I wanna buy the Digital Collectors Edition. I'm a college student so I've saved up callously by keeping myself on a tight budget. I have about RM 280 saved up now. However, pre-ordering it digitally requires that I order it from Origins with a credit card.

Here is the price and information required: Imgur

I only have a CIMB atm card and a CimbClicks account. I read online that a debit card can also be used but it must be Mastercard or Visa card. Is there a way to do this without getting a debit card? Can anyone help me!! It's MASS EFFECT 3!!

Oh yeah, I prefer to pay it directly through Origins not go through a middleman.

Whoops. I should have elaborated more. I wanna get the Collectors Edition. However the retail version doesn't have any solid collectibles that I feel is worth it. I prefer the hassle free digital version. Of course I'm thinking in the long term here with the debit card. If I can get one which enables me to purchase any online items (clothing, books, collectibles, etc.) that would be a bonus too.

Today I got some good news to share with everyone: We will soon be releasing Origin 8.5, a brand new update chock-full of changes. We’ve been listening a lot to your feedback, and with this release, we’re introducing a couple of really cool and highly-requested features: custom avatars and the ability to hide games, demos, and betas. But that’s not all! Origin 8.5 also extends cloud storage options to a number of new games, including Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and the upcoming Mass Effect 3, letting you play (and save) your games from any Origin-enabled PC.

For the full list of changes, here’s the official rundown of the release notes for Origin 8.5:

• Added the ability to upload custom avatars.
• Added cloud storage support for a number of additional EA games, including Mass Effect 3.
• Added captcha verification for increased security.
• Improved relevancy of friend search results.
• Progress bar now displays when installing games.
• Streamlined Origin update and installation processes.
• Game Add-Ons (DLC) can now be purchased and installed directly through Origin.
• Updated the look and feel of the Origin client.
• Users can now invite multiple friends to play at once.
• Users can now hide games in their Game Library.

Origin 8.5

DA and ME getting extended with cloud storage. This is good indeed.

If you are looking for sales, better off going with Amazon or Gamersgate.

In its current state Origin is more of a client than a store. Still lots of things it will need to sort out just like how Steam first launched. Undeniably the advantage of Origin is in its vast library of games by EA.

In its current state Origin is more of a client than a store. Still lots of things it will need to sort out just like how Steam first launched. Undeniably the advantage of Origin is in its vast library of games by EA.

Yes. Apparently EA will be moving to make future games Origins exclusive. A damn shame really.

Same thing like how Valve are doing theirs with Steamworks. They are merely protecting their own interest as a commercial business. If they are willing to make third-party titles to be available on Origin then I would say they taking a right step in this.

True.

Right now though, Origins has plenty of bad rep to clear and a whole load of work to catch up with Steam. Which shouldn't be the case in the first place, since they already had like years to study Valve's business model.

here the info that i found out why some old ea title did't get to activate on;

https://activate.ea.com/gameactivation.do
https://activate.ea.com/applyentitlement.do

You need a ea classic screenname for those title to activate on origin

here what you need to do

Go to Pogo.com and create a new account under the same email address as your origin account. After that you should see an EA Classic Screen Name persona in your persona list.

hope it help

Benefits Of Origin

Live Streaming Demos and Free-To-Play Games - Did you know that you can play web games, including streaming demos of some of our latest titles, completely free on Origin? Whether you’re looking to demo Dead Space 2 or just want to kill some time playing online games like Plants vs. Zombies or Bejeweled, Origin’s got you covered.

Cloud Storage - Still in beta, our new Cloud Storage feature means you’ll pick up from exactly where you left off, no matter where you’re playing. Have to turn off your game right as you’re about to beat the boss level? Well don’t worry – now your game data will live in the Cloud. When you start up again, you’ll be right back at the same spot, ready to secure your victory.

Consolidate Your Library - Origin now offers you the ability to add virtually any EA game you’ve ever purchased digitally to your Origin library, regardless of where you originally bought the game. Just enter the product code and a new copy will be added to your Origin library.

Origin Goes Where You Go - Designed to go where you go, Origin lets you connect and play with friends on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android smartphone. In addition to the world’s leading portfolio of mobile games, Origin also offers mobile gamers the ability to find and connect with friends so that you can play in real-time – no matter where you are.

Origin delivers a broken Mass Effect 2 installer…in Hungarian

user posted image
QUOTE
On Friday night, I suddenly, desperately wanted to play Mass Effect 2. I’d procrastinated all the way up to the release of Mass Effect 3, and finally snapped out of whatever was holding me back. No problem: digital distribution makes the PC the best-suited platform to satiate sudden cravings. ME2 is on Steam, but since ME3 is exclusively on Origin, I figured I’d buy it there so the two games could snuggle up together in my library. That arbitrary decision was a huge mistake.

In Steam, when a game finishes downloading, it’s ready to play (unless any prerequisites need installing, but that’s generally painless). I assumed Origin would work the same, and the service’s FAQ claims it does: “Installations are easy, as Origin technology enables instant play after a successful download.” But when Mass Effect 2 was finally on my hard drive, the download button turned into an install button. No big deal…until I clicked on it.

user posted image

Not only did I have the Hungarian version of the installer, but it was encountering an error which I couldn’t read. That’s pretty damn absurd, but I wasn’t going to give up so easily. I really wanted to play Mass Effect 2, and hey, I’m a resourceful PC gamer! I can fix a simple localization mix-up! So I poked around in the installer’s directory and discovered the installation configuration ini. A simple change to the file name loaded the installer in English. Easy. Now what was that error?

user posted image

I reopened the config file and saw that it does reference file locations in terms of discs. It’s apparently a known problem, and the solution I found claimed it was caused by a corrupted download. That meant my only option was to redownload the game with my fingers crossed. I had too much resolve to give up there, so I went ahead and redownloaded the game, but at a much faster rate and without crossing my fingers…

user posted image
shocking.gif

I’d chastise myself for feeling entitled to instant gratification, but instant gratification is the main benefit I get from buying digital editions. I spent two hours downloading a broken product and another hour trying to fix it. I was done. Because Steam was there to save the day, I finished Mass Effect 2 in time to have a fresh save ready for Mass Effect 3 before the weekend was over (yes, I played all weekend).

I know it’s a bit late to jump on the Origin hate bandwagon, and I never really wanted to—at least, I never expected to rant about it here (what is this, r/gaming?). But it’s unacceptable that it fails at its core function: delivering games. I don’t think every game needs to be on Steam, and I’m not just cheerleading for Steam. I know EA won’t abandon its platform, so I want it to work well and succeed. I don’t hate Origin, and maybe this was just a fluke, but it doesn’t give me confidence.

It’s not news that Origin has problems, but maybe this post will spare someone my specific frustration: if you need to catch up on Mass Effect 2, I don’t recommend acquiring it on Origin. Buy it on Steam, and your save will port over just fine when you play ME3 (which did install fine on Origin).

haih, another reason to hate Origin. and i haven't download my Mass Effect 2 on Origin. sweat.gif

I don't like all this online stuff that make original user more susah to play thanthe pirate user, but at least Origin no need to change anything in router port for now while if you can't access the router set up page, then you can't connect to steam at all.

using origin is a hit and miss for me. just installed it for bf3. sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it just refuses to sync and sometimes it dies mid game. which is very annoying when the game is very intense.

I did "live chat" with EA Origin support. She said, if you buy the games, they will send you the activation code to ur email first so that you are able to send the activation codes to someone else. The activation codes wont automatically tied to ur own account and able to use at other account. FYI, if you purchase any expansion of dlc's like Back to karkand, close quarter then it will automatically tied to ur own account except for compete games. Is that true? I going to ask someone to buy the game with his own Origin account and send the activation code to me.

I believe you read it wrong..

It said 'Battlefield 3 & Kingdoms of Amalur DLCs'

The BF3 Shortcuts Bundle doesn't have any discount..
Weird though B2K got discount, so B2K not considered as DLC?

EA Senior VP criticizes Steam sales: “I just think it cheapens your intellectual property.”

user posted image
QUOTE
Gamesindustry.biz had a chat with EA’s David DeMartini, Senior Vice President of Global Ecommerce. DeMartini talks about the state of and future of Origin, EA’s digital distribution service, which has apparently been downloaded 13 million times, and generated more than $150 million in revenue.

Things get interesting with GI’s interviewer asks if Steam’s regular “deep discounting” is something EA plans to mirror, and DeMartini says no and explains why.

DeMartini, when asked about replicating Steam’s strategy of giving deep digital discounts: “We won’t be doing that. Obviously they think it’s the right thing to do after a certain amount of time. I just think it cheapens your intellectual property. I know both sides of it, I understand it. If you want to sell a whole bunch of units, that is certainly a way to do that, to sell a whole bunch of stuff at a low price. The gamemakers work incredibly hard to make this intellectual property, and we’re not trying to be Target. We’re trying to be Nordstrom. When I say that, I mean good value – we’re trying to give you a fair price point, and occasionally there will be things that are on sale you could look for a discount, just don’t look for 75 percent off going-out-of-business sales.”

DeMartini goes on to add: “Also what Steam does might be teaching the customer that “I might not want it in the first month, but if I look at it in four or five months, I’ll get one of those weekend sales and I’ll buy it at that time at 75 percent off.” It’s an approach, and I’m not going to say it’s not working for Valve. It certainly works for Valve; I don’t know if it works as well for the publishing partners who take on the majority of that haircut.”

I'm confused because BF3 is listed as 50% off.

Only the latest BF3 Premium got no discount since just released.

its quite confusing really. Should have just said Battlefield 3 DLCs.

I have no idea why they wanna add all these into exception. Just claim a storewide discount + adjust those that already with offer back to original price so it only get 50% discount, not offer +50%.

It works for everyone of us even valve tho, selling 10 times more copies @ $9.99 is far better than selling 1 @ $59.99.

IMO, EA just want more money.

EA not really in the wrong here. Valve makes most money off steam, so just having more users pretty much means more $$$$$.
that's why Valve keep promoting steam by having more f2p games & even introduce their own--TF2 & Dota 2.

that who hurts the most here are big companies who produce AAA games thanks to most steam users who ONLY buy game when there's a discount (which in steam, it's pretty much inevitable).

hell...even Portal 2 selling numbers are pretty low before the discount.

I've try bought a game from Origin, its a Sims 3 Expansion Pack for my little sister. What I get is, the key is e-mailed to the origin account e-mail, which mean, my sister got the e-mail. The e-mail will consist of Receipt and Activation Key. I'm not sure this key can be activated by other origin account.

Peter Moore to replace John Riccitiello as EA CEO?

QUOTE
Are you in the mood for a whopper of a rumor? Let’s hope, because we’ve got one here for you: anonymous sources tell Game Front that Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello is about to be let go, and that current EA Sports boss Peter Moore will step in to take his place. It goes without saying that you should probably take this with a grain of salt (or five), but if this is true, it could mean huge things for Electronic Arts, which has been experiencing some stock price woes recently.

According to Game Front’s sources, Riccitiello was asked to step down from his position at Electronic Arts after the earnings call that took place on June 30. Apparently, the departure of Riccitiello and subsequent promotion of Moore is “not set in stone” yet, as EA’s board of directors still needs to vote on the change. However, tensions are rising at the Electronic Arts offices as the company’s stock price continues to fall.

John Riccitiello has overseen EA since his return to the company in 2007. It was under him that EA-published games began requiring online passes, and he was in charge when the EA Store was relaunched as Origin last year. Riccitiello is no stranger to controversy, as Electronic Arts was named The Consumerist’s Worst Company in America earlier this year.

The rumor comes just a day after Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter stated that Riccitiello had expressed concerns over being fired from the company. Pachter later followed-up by saying that though he was quoted accurately, he was merely kidding around. Perhaps he wasn’t so far off the mark after all?

Origin Accounts Hacked – Maybe Change Your Password

QUOTE
Uh-oh. Eurogamer are reporting that a number of people have woken up this morning to find that their EA Origin account has been hacked. Receiving emails telling them that changes have successfully been made, recipients are not too delighted since they never asked for any. And then of course getting control of their accounts back again is a great big palava. It’s even happened to one of Eurogamer’s own.

Rather than the phishing scam it might at first appear to be, these really are successfully changed account notifications. Which means someone has got hold of both a username and password of an account holder, and been able to circumnavigate the security that prevents an outsider being able to change such details. Because, as is mostly the norm, there isn’t any. I’ve just loaded my own Origin account, and when logged in all I need to do to change the password is know the old one. That done, the original account holder is locked out. Fairly standard, obviously.

And because your Origin account details are the same as those for your EA profile, with the same info you can log into profile.ea.com and change the email address too. The only security check to do that is, obviously, to enter the same password again. Doing this sends an email to your previously registered address, but contains absolutely no information about what it’s been changed to. So once someone’s been in and changed the details, you’ve no way of knowing what they’ve changed both your email address nor password to. They’ve got complete control of your account, and with that can even change your Origin ID.

Using this account to then buy games isn’t immediately possible, however. While Origin stores credit card information, it doesn’t store the three digit CSS code, making it have a practical application for the first time ever. And many banks now have that added layer of security requiring yet another password. So it’s unlikely they’ll be able to go on any sprees, and your card number is obscured other than the last four digits. However, what IS on full display is your home address.

A thread on NeoGAF reveals that this has been happening to a lot of people, over the last few days, and also that EA has not been too impressive in responding. However, one person reports a clever trick for at least finding out some of the email address of the person who’s nicked your account – resetting your EA account using a linked account, such as Xbox Live, rewards you with a message saying that an email has been dispatched, and to which domain. Then logging on to the associated XBL account, and downloading EA Sports’ app, the full email address was revealed.

EA assures Eurogamer that they are “escalating the matter”, but more details have yet to appear. So really the larger concern here is: how were email addresses and passwords of multiple accounts obtained? While very many online games and stores are getting hacked of late, passwords tend to be pretty well protected, and people are usually notified to change them after such an attack. Hopefully EA will be back with some answers soon. Meanwhile, it seems prudent to go change your Origin/EA account password now, just in case.

Invalid password out of nowhere.. old issue, but seems like now getting worse..

My password became invalid twice in 3 months, but I didn't get any email regarding password change though.

I do believe Origin was hacked as I've seen alot of hacking complaint on Origin forum since 2 months ago. Luckily my profile still intact so I still can reset my password without any problem.

"Anytime a player has a question about the security of his or her account or personal data, we take it very seriously and take all possible steps to help,"

Yeah... right...... EA still hasn't reply my 3 months old ticket~ I asked them what exactly happen to my account.. heh..

Sadly for me I was at work when I got an email saying my email was changed. Checked again and found out that I have no games in my origin (I registered with EA years beforehand, so weirdly enough my email was linked to my original EA Profile as well as Origin). right now trying to get back my BF3, but I doubt it ;A;

So finally I got my answer from EA forum regarding what happen to my account 3 months ago.

If your password suddenly became invalid and you didn't get email regarding password has changed, this is what actually happen :

QUOTE
Nope, what you saw was our Account Lockout feature. We're working on improving the notifications so you're aware when this occurs (notifications about this feature haven't been an issue until recently), for now the easiest way to reset the lockout duration is by resetting your password as you've done.

Suffice to say, this feature has prevented every last automated attack against Origin users over the last few years

http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/9068765.page

But unfortunately it seems like the protection doesn't work for all users.. so for those who got email regarding your password was changed out of nowhere, I wish you guys a good luck..

Mind specify the current country you are ? If there's no Malaysia in origin list then I might as well delete it off my desktop laugh.gif

It should be there, it right above or under Maldives.

Not weird at all... They will locate you by your IP for multiple reasons:-

1. Pricing offset based on region
2. this is just my suspicion, no proof at all... financially, they are managed by different agents for different region and different agents will only accept certain country for banking.

This also happens on Steam, Google Wallet, Microsoft, Paypal (e.g you cannot use Malaysian card on US account) and many more that I don't know about.

I tried buying from Origin and Product Authorisation Failed error comes up. But then EA charged me. Someone help please. RM180 vanished into thin air. I contacted the LIVE help but no use. They said they will refund in 2-3 days time but EA and Origin having such a reputation, I don't think it will come at all. Who should I report to?

Very nice discount now but yeah not touching Origin now. Crysis 3 was a waste of my money

Now already got HoTS waiting not yet play and upcoming Bioshock Infinite.

The only good choice in Origin now i think is Far Cry 3

I have a really important question that I hope someone can help me. After Origin came with the new interface update, the current price of the store is it still in currency SGD or changed to USD? There is no clear indication whether it is USD or SGD as both use the same symbol "$", EA made no FAQ sheet about it either.

I did add the item into cart and check-out until the part where I should review my order before finally placing order, but I didn't see the currency listed in SGD nor USD, still the plain $ dollar sign. ohmy.gif Really scared if they charge me in USD

it's SGD. since we are region restricted to the SGD store, you will be charged in SGD. I just bought Awakened and the ME3 Digital Deluxe Ed upgrade and was charged in SGD.

something to do with your firewall? try turning off any firewall or antivirus and try again. something is blocking origin's connection to internet.

Yes it's the only platform. Physical copies also need to use Origin.

Current price on Origin is SGD69.90, around RM180.
