I graduated from From 6 and took my STPM last year. Since long time ago, i was uncertain to choose my future degree path. I have interest in Chemistry since Form 4. When I entered Form 6, I chose Biology stream rather than Physics stream as I was poor in Physics. For my 1.5years in Form 6 life, I confirmed that I would like to further my study to field of Chemistry than Medic. This may be because I hate to memorise thing just to overcome the examination.

Initially, I would like to apply for Pure Chemistry in IPTA and USM this year. However, I am uncertain after listened to my friends and teachers. My Chemistry teacher told me to go for Education and then take Chemistry which will lead to a stable future while my friends said that Chemistry Engineering has a better future than Pure Chemistry. Both of teachers and friends said that Pure Chemistry graduate hardly find a job.

I personally really like to study Chemistry and wish to further my study with courses related to Chemistry, however I scare that I hardly find job after graduate. So, can anyone experienced advise me about this? The application for degree study starts today and I still not sure that whether should I go for Pure Chemistry. Thanks for advance. smile.gif

seems like u have 2 choices right? pure chem and chem engineering biggrin.gif u can toss a coin, but take not the result. because u've already get the answer when the coin is being tossed *the side u wished facing up. - in short, go for wat u like, not wat u think u should XD

btw, go do plently of researches about the course b4 u decide, like what u'll be studying in that course and jobs related to the course, which working environment u like etc.

my 2 cents =P

I know a lot of places who're looking for people with pure Chemistry.

If you have the spunk, and want to teach after that, you'll be able to without an Education degree.

I think you will need physics for chemical engineering, isn't it? hmm.gif But UKM also accepts students for engineering provided they have sat for SPM physics.. hmm.gif

Hi..

Take education if you to be a teacher or lecturer..

Take Pure Chemistry if you want to do research or working in lab..

Take Chemical Engineering if you want to be engineer..

As for hard to find job..? Based on my batch at ukm, most of pure chem student continue study master, only few geting job.. But I study chemical technology.. Most of my coursemate become engineer..

Hi TS,

DO NOT take Chemical Engineering if u do not like physics or you are not good at it. its 90% physics and 10% of chemistry. Trust me, i am like you interested in chemistry but took Chemical Engineering. I did not regret but its kinda difficult for me to study.
If you want to do well in a subject, u must passion for it. i have developed my passion for Chemical Engineering only in the 3rd year. And yea, its a bit too late but at least i have some passion on it. If you feel u can do well in the chemistry DO IT. Trust me, if u can get a 1st class, u can continue ur studies for Masters and PHD with scholarships. and yea ur future is secure. Don't worry, u can still teach if you want after taking ur chemistry, but of course, those with the educaiton degree will have the advantage. GO FOR YOUR PASSION. That's all i can say. its just my opinion thou. Good luck!

Do pure chem or industrial chem if you want to work in industries/R&D/sales.

Dont do Chem Eng if u really hate physics, that is why i didnt take engineering, btw i'm from physics STPM.

If Education, u'll most prob will be ended up in school teachers, unless u become an educator.

This means that in Chemical Engineering study mostly about Physics and less on Chemistry? My teacher also said if study pure Chemistry then only turn to education will come out later as others who just took education.

Yep! i only studied Chemistry for 2 sems, mostly all physics. We deal with fluid mechanics, particle technology, plant designing, mass balance, and etc. as you see, the topics here doesn't really involves chemistry. more to physics and calculation. hahaha.. yea as i have said, those who took education will have the advantage over you if u take pure chemistry. But, what is your interest? if u are not into teaching, why not take chemistry? If u take chemistry, u can learn the subject u like, then if u want to teach, i will advice you to take masters and phd later. Become a lecturer is better than teacher in terms of salary. U can engage in research, rather than teaching what's in the book. hahhaa... well its only my opinion thou.. and there are company who will hired those with chemistry background.=)

I would recommend you to take Education with Chemistry instead of just Chemistry.

You'll then have the option of going into teaching or the private sector. Job openings for pure chemistry is more restricted. Don't underestimate the income of teachers these days, especially those who give tuition part-time!

Other then being a teacher. Is there anything else someone with pure chemistry can do?

Cause yesterday, I just submitted my transfer form to change from Pharmacy to pharmaceutical chemistry.

I thought you cannot practice as a pharmacist if you take up pharmaceutical chemistry? That's what I've read from some earlier threads..

I think you can only do research stuff for pharmaceutical chemistry, IINM. hmm.gif And why would you want to change? Pharm is too tough for you? brows.gif

I never want to have anything to do with pharmacy. From the preview that one of the lecturer gave me about R&D of drug research,

lots of potential drugs will go through the pipe line for testing and so on, and probably 1 or 2 of the drugs will be safe to be use by the market.

And the time taken is very long . Years.

LOL, actually no, I don't find it tough. Its just more towards memorizing things blindly especially on human biology.

I wanted to learn more on chemistry actually , focusing more in depth on chemistry.

And so I transfer from pharmacy to pharm chem. I can't transfer out to other uni, and to start all over again would be a waste of my parent's money.

So for now I'll go for pharm chem. 6 sems only.

Now I will have more free time, I was thinking of learning a few new languages. Better put my time to good use lulz...although usually I say only but hardly take any action. hahahahahaah

I always wanted to go to places I see in national geographic magazines.

no point continuing on something if you don't have the heart to do so.

Why do people always equate chemical engineering = a lot of chemistry?? It's just basic English! Chemistry =\= chemicals!!

And freezingsea, I pity you for entering the wrong uni because pharmacy is so much more than that. Hopefully you will enjoy your new course.

I dunno what has IMU taught you because in my first year alone I've been doing so much organic chemistry that I am sick of it.

Monash teaches.you.chem in 1 goal. So i guess later on you will be dealing more on human biology.
I think all pharmacy courses taught locally won't differ much in the topics and content.

Btw i can show you all the topics IMU covers for the 8 semester.
Lulz let me know if your interested

Erm no I am also dealing a lot of physiology on another unit. That's why our course load is rather heavy.

Yes please show if you have the time and I can show you Monash's as well.
