Hi,

I just received a "Change New Meter" notice from TNB today..

I have a few questions..

a) During working hours, nobody at home...how they going to change my meter? will they climb inside my house or break my gate? (I heard they are gangsters)

b) I heard new meter uses new calculation...the electric bil will raise drastically...is it true?

Haiz, the notice like a bomb for me in 2012 year...what's a gift!!!

Can you ask them to come in the weekend? They have no right to come in your house without your permission. That is call trespassing.

Is the same type of meter just with tempered proof. I usually record my daily maybe 2 days once, so you can do that before they come over change, and after they come over change. See what's the difference.

Very big percentage you will get caught. See, this tnb guy change your whole area meter. And sure every house will ask want to mod the meter or not. If high percentage house mod the meter, tnb will know from the high consumption lost.

Once open file investigate, habis lah you.

If they never modifer than it will make no different on the outcome, hence nothing to be worry. If TNB later suit or claim they modifier the metak and TNB will in big trouble as that no probe and evidence when TNB remove the old meter. But I guess they should fill in a complain as evidence to be use on future brows.gif

i dont think you got the right not to change. that meter is belong to TNB. They will come with lawyer letter/police if you insist not letting them to change. Property is yours but meter is belong to them.

If you modified the meter and found out by TNB, they will come and take your meter away and give you a highest assumption monthly usage * how many years you been stealing from them + 1 summon from lawyer. You have to pay the amount charges before you can get back a new meter or electricity.
Moreover, you might have to give monthly kopi fee's to the guy who came to your house taking your monthly usage from time to time.

TNB already come to my house and change new Digital meter.. and nobody home.. since my house have no gate or fence they simply change it outside, but if you want to see them change meter you can make appointment with them (they already provide a number to call if anything you want to discuss, - I got 2 letter)

They change new digital meter all in this area, phase by phase..

for me its much better to change to new meter since old meter is old and maybe its out of accuracy, either you pay low or high bill.

and my first bill .. it not high than before bill.. it almost same.. later i'll paste it here.. since my house now in renovation i can't find it ..

this is where u can win in court case. meter belong to them

so why should i pay rm500 to upgrade your belonging.

lets take another scenario. i have a car rental services. u rent a car from me. now i wan upgrade my car (rims for example) to 19" but u r still renting my car.
so, who should pay for the sport rims upgrade? you, or me?

either you didnt read the whole things or the post have been editted. TNB is not charging rm500 for new meter. Its "someone" else for some "job" to be done.

sometimes these dodgy fellow only pose as TNB staff to offer you these services, that way u can try report also no use since they just borrow/steal the blue jacket
some more u trust them cos u think they r tnb

also regarding the accuracy of the electricity meters, they are all governed and watched by independent bodies like Suruhanjaya Tenaga, and follow weight and measurement Act.
ppl question meter accuracy but do u question the petrol station whether they really give u 1.90/Liter? or is it 0.8L? or how do telco record ur call durations, is it accurate ? or how bout that weight machine at Jusco when u weigh your chicken

No modification, only home after office, and dinner at my mom place. I think average 6 downlight for about 5 hours. I work late too, conference calling to US. I calculate, when I am home (night), usually around 5 to 8 units.

So I would say the electronic and the old meter did not go far off. Still, why they want to change the black horse? is working fine.

Added on March 10, 2012, 9:28 amBTW, the new meter come with reverse mode. Think good for people want to put solar in future.

You got hot water dispenser? that one take some energy too. You did not mention water heater, you using solar?

And other possibility is the driver for your LED is not efficient, maybe wasting another 50% for heat.

Water pump 240 watt per hour. 24 hours is a 5.76 KWh per day. Minus the pump, the A/C usage is about 2 Kwh, think is about that number.

Ya, just wonder how come your record is so low. You got a defective meter fr TNB? I have to be careful since the change of meter and watch it evryday because there are many news that TNB just charge thousands of rm to some people accusing them of stealing power and if dont pay they cut supply. It could be their meters that are faulty who know if we are unlucky to have these defective meter and now you got one, hahaha...

This is what monopoly is all about, dont pay, cut. Any problem with meter, your fault, you curi!!! Cannot make enought money increase rate. You have no 2nd choice, no competition.

You see, if the meter is performing below, it is you curi. If the meter is overcharging you rugi. Whatever QC or standard there is no 100% the meters are accurate whether electronic or the old meter. There is no body to check if the meter is good and perform over 10, 20 yrs. You know traders are required to change their weighing machine from time to time yet TNB no need, it is up to them to make the call. Malaysia boleh. Double, triple standards we have.

Well I actually can't check it myself cause I live in an apartment building and the doors to the electrical and water boards are locked always.

There are only 3 people living in my house..2 go to work daily from 8 and return back late night.

I'm the only person who actually uses anything in the house..A/c runs merely 3 hours at night, and my laptop is on for about 16-17 hours on weekends. On weekdays I go to college so no ones at home basically..

I used to receive 30-40 ringgit monthly when we were running on the old meter. After they replaced it to the digital one, I got hit right in the face with a 212 ringgit bill yesterday.. vmad.gif

Wat do? unsure.gif

You still can check the accuracy of the meter. By just 1-2hr of your time and an applicance that you know the wattage. As long as you can see the meter usage lcd screen.

How to check, search back weekee instruction.

That's right rclxms.gif .

Get one watt meter and test one high power appliances and test, switch off all others including fridge and wait and watch.

Question : Do you really need a meter to send electricity to your home? Putting my black mask on smile.gif has anyone split the source, metered for ground floor, no meter for 1st floor, direct connect? Would it ever work?

Yes, you split to 2 DB..this is in Weikee's thread, you can read about it ---> http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1920588

It has also been mentioned a few times in this thread by Weikee...hope it helps. but this is splitting the DB...NOT STEALING electricity... u still pay for what u use.......not sure if this is what u meant

Don't steal la bro...nanti kena tangkap then habis

Guess this is not what GOKS said, he intent is connection into the wires before going into meter. Your designed is out from meter than split it to Grd and 1st floor.

16KW is high???
Without A/C it will around 10Kw...

Normally
Refrigerators
Pray table light
Salt stone light
2 LED (never off) (3W and 9W)
Car pourche 15W LED downlight
At night normally with use the 15W x 6LED downlight for few hours...
Backdoor 2 x 10W LED

with this possiable hit 10KW?
*
I borrowed a Amp meter from a electrician and monitored a week, it seem like not much different (+-10%) between the reader at TNB vs Amp meter (V x I = P(W) wink.gif
I indeed used 10KW per day without A/C, with A/C on two hours with hit 16KW per day

Side question: ANyone know how the electric usage of Ceiling fan count? For Deka Q8 / KDK K14X8-CL ? Appaerently it was hit up on night time due to it...

Dam, Call them up, and I tell them you over charge me, and the number is incorrect, cause they use old meter reading, I told them my meter change, and last reading was way lower.

You know what, they don't have record my meter was change.

Lucky I have all the photos as proof.

- Thermo Pot
- Halogen lamp (I notice many fancy design light use halogen)
- electrical hob
- Fridge (especially old fridge)
- Water heater
- Electrical hob
- Iron

BTW, i also use about 9kwh without a/c. With one A/c around 13 +-

Fan usually is about 60 to 90watt/hour

About aircond. For every 1 degree lower consume a lot more than the previous degree . For every one degree lower it is not same, the lower the higher per degree comsumption. Eg. from 29 to 28 = 1unit of power, fr 28 to 27 = 1.1 unit of power, 27 to 26 = 1.3 unit, something like this. The most effecient is set to auto where the aircond adjust itself to be 1 or 2 degree colder than the air temp outside. That save electricity. If you set more than 2 degree lower than the outside temp it will consume much more. Most mordern home aircond has this function.

When you need to be lower, it is better to use higher horse power so that it will "not" consume more power than it is needed. With higher power aircond lower temp can be achieved sooner and therefore "save" power consumption. for example if you use an underpower aircond and set it to 16 the aircond will keep on running, no off and yet cannot achieve the desired temp, ie. 16. It is therefore important to know your need and also to select the correct size/power of your aircond.

If you use too high power aircond you will also have problem. The aircond will keep on and off within minute and you experince unncessary short period too hot and too cold. Witinin minute the aircond on to cool the room, becuase it is so powerful it cool so fast and it goes off then on again as the other part of the romm was warm air flow into it.

Why you need to set to 23?. You use comforter and wear heavy cloth?. Yes to really enjoy sleeping in aircond room is set the temp to low, very low and use comforter like winter. But due to $$$$ cannot tahan the bill I set to 25 and use light blanket and wear little. For normal day in hall I set it to 1 degree lower than outside temp. A one degree cooler than outside feel comfortable in the house and comsume little power. You see there are many ppl have aircond in the hall and dont use worry about bill but if you know how things work you enjoy what you bought and pay little. May be a lot of ppl dont understand this. Just give you a situation using fan. when you sit under the fan with the fan on you feel so much comfortable than without the fan on even the fan is at low speed. A little different make so much different and so much more comfortable but if you swtich the fan to max speed the feeling of comfort is not much different.

For me, anything 24 and higher is stuffy. I can stand cold or hot no problem. But not stuffy.

I have quilt, but only cover leg.

That is why if set 24, i rather off it, open up windows, and switch on fan + Ventilation fan. I get fresh air.

Have similiar story to share with you guys, I just moving to my house, it's old house at Mahkota Cheras that I brought and renovated. Just moving in for a week, I've a chat with my neighbor and he told me he temp his meter, have to open all 4 aircond just to maintain monthly bill of rm-50-rm60 so it interest me, I even ask him to look for his contractor who temp the meter.

Mana tau the 2nd day, chun chun day after TNB came pressing my door bell, the said my old meter rosak already cannot read and have to change meter, this is not happen for the whole town according to them only change those that cant read, then I ask for proof cox i thought the random check, the really have my name on their letter and everything on my registration including my IC number, so have no choice let them change lol.

This is the 3rd week so i do not know how much it gonna cost or either it's higher than previous or not as I just move in.. I do not know if this is consider lucky or bad luck sigh doh.gif

Anyway one of my friend told me old meter is better especially for old house, analog meter runs by spring and the spring will slow down after few years usually 5 - 10 years above, it's like wear and tear but digital 1 wont have this problem so 100years u stay there also bill wont go down lol

the person who came to my house is TNB guy for sure since they have all letters or documents under my name and never offer to change / temp anything at all so i guess those that jump in to your house or offer u to change / temp meter are sub-cons..

when it is parellel you get the max voltage and max amp. Some appliances especially those consume high power ones and it has two or more power functions and not to over load the house circuit when switching on both or all of them the circuits inside have to be in serial. For example you have an electric oven and cooker combine in one, you can on max the oven to 3kw, on other time you can on the cooker to 3kw, that does not hurt your house circuit as the max power for that particular circuit is 3kw or 13A. But when you on the oven to max 3kw and at the same time you swtich on the cooker to max, the oven power will automatically drop to say 2kw and the cooker to 1kw, or 1.5kw oven, 1.5kw cooker or the sum of the two never exceed 3kw. That is serial circuit with the objective of not melting your house circuit wire. In this sense when you think you often use both then dont buy something of combination but seperate, ie. cooker is cooker; oven is oven. Hope this helps.

The subsidy dont go to us. The subsidy goes to the IPP. TNB buys expensive electricity from IPP and sell cheap to us and the govt pay TNB for the price difference plus profit, something like that. Know who created the IPPs? The longest serving PM lor. So the present PM is telling you in whatever way the govt pays for it for TNB to make money. If TNB dont make money we got no electricity and new technology as money is needed for investment for future building bigger power station, etc, etc...

Read the bill carefully. It is usually 2 months once for "normal" reading and inbetween "estimate" reading. I got a bill for 72days which is more than 2 months also 700kwh.

Still for your case 700kwh for 2 months is very high. Something is very wrong with the meter otherwise if shoult be: You forgot to off aircond? You did not close the door of your fridge properly and the fridge is running 24 hrs or the door did not seal properly airtight?

You can do a check to the meter. You shut off all electric power to your house before you both go to work, record the meter reading, switch on a lamp or few items like fans with total 200watt. When you come home after 10 hrs the meter should increase by 2kwhr. Get one watt meter to measure the wattage of these things like fans to be on the accurate side.

When you come home after 10 hrs the meter should increase by 2kwhr. Get one watt meter to measure the wattage of these things like fans to be on the accurate side.

Yeah I am trying to do all that soon.
I tried shutting down everything and the meter didn't move so i assume it's not leaking somewhere. I also measure the meter when no one at home(only fridge and routers are on) and it moves about 1-2 kwh (9-10 hours) which I think is acceptable.

Yesterday I recorded it used 18kwh just in one night, I don't even on my aircon (my housemate was using his). doh.gif

You mean your housemate using the aircon while you didn't ON yours? Try check your housemate aircon setting temperature. Is he full blast with lowest temp. Or both of you off the aircon 1 night and see the meter reading.

Yeah been using fan for few weeks already. I am not really that keen on using aircon unless it's a very hot day. I checked with him he said at 23C like that only.

Still, the current reading from previous bill is already at 500+ kwh (date of last bill was on 12 June)

First you got to make sure the last reading (12 June) was an estimate or actual (normal reading).

2nd, is your house mate on the aircond during weekend to confirm the high 700kwhr bill.

You measured the meter when no one at home(only fridge and routers were on) and it moved about 1-2 kwh (9-10 hours). This shows nothing abnormal with the meter but still it is on the high side as fridge if no one opens the door it should be "off" most time than "on" and fridge takes only 300watt or less for a small fridge I assume since only 2 of you and nothing much in there if not making ice.

Same time you said "Yesterday I recorded it used 18kwh just in one night, I don't even on my aircon (my housemate was using his)." A 1hp aircond is around 800watt (or 1kw if old one). Assuming it is 10 hrs it should not consume 18kwhr even if it is on all the times even with your fan, fridge and some lighting or router on. It should be 10kwhr over 10 hrs.

It is difficult to judge unless you monitor and record reading everyday. To cut short first you got to check if the aircond of your housemate is not at its optimal performance. That is to say the air cond keep on even when it is set to 23. It could be due to filter clogged, lack of gas or outdoor unit is block or fan running slowly. To know that is to on the aircond shut all windows and doors and after an hour go in the room and see if the aircond will off and on and off and on. If it on longer than off then the aircond need service or be replaced.

Alternatively you sleep in yur hoursemate room and he goes to your room and you on fan and he use your airocnd and you compare the meter reading if it is anywhere hitting 18kwhr, since your mate cannot sleep without aircond.

After confirming the aircond, if it hits much way below 18kwhr then it is his airocnd that is the source of the problem. and if it still hit 18kwhr you then have to get yourself a watt meter and do like I said before to confirm the if the meter is faulty.

One other thing, it could be the aircond and the meter, both.

I got a watt meter, where you stay or work?

There is case after the owner brought a 2nd home. After change the meter, TNB claim you have tamper the meter and pay back with high bill.

How to argue this kind of case? You know the previous owner did that but you don't have proof.

Think I finally settle my new meter issue. Hopefully.

Here the summarized what happen.

On 2nd Mar 2012, my meter was change (with only 1 day notice, got to take EL), lucky I took photos before and after meter change. Than waited 1 month, and here come a bill BUT is giving me "Anggaran" of my old meter reading best it give anggran I use 1000 units. I quickly launch a report via TNB email, no reply after 3 days, fine I go SS15 TNB with the photos I took, give them the photos. After few days nothing happen, my bills still anggaran from old meter reading (can check online). Bloody fedup, wrote another email, and call 15454 talk to them.. Than on the Sat of that week, a TNB technician just come my house See See look look the meter, few day later I check TNB online, ok they remove the anggaran. So I hope they update the system with new meter.. BUT NO... I call (15454) them 1 month later asking why no bills for 2 months? The lady say is still show old meter with my old meter reading.. WTF !@#!@#!@#, go TNB ss15 again Ask them why? Again print them the photos show them and give them the photos again!!. That all about 3+ months

And on mid Jul, TNB people came give reading.. Good, they give me according to my new meter reading. BUT wait.... The bill is "N", and meter unit use is 1111. Fine, 4 months never use 1111 look low. I go compare the meter WTF, my reader show 1711, and he put 1111. And best is the bill state my one month use from mid Jun to Jul is 1111. Can you imagine the extra i need to pay... it should be from 2nd March to mid Jul usage is 1711, but instead he put 1111 units used for 1 month. !@#!@#!@

Go SS15 TNB, show them the bill, and my photos, and give them the photos again!!!! They say will readjust it.. fine... Wait about 2 weeks, check online still no sign of any changes. Go again to SS15 TNB, WTF, nothings been done, don't know where my latest report. Lucky I made a copy of the report, show them YES, together with another set of photos. Ask them fix it on the spot. Waited another 20mins at credit control department, and the lady show me the extra they over charge, and will credit back, ask me pay the balance. The have to credit me RM 149, and told me it will reflex in next month bill.

let wait Aug.

Hi All Sifus here,

Have a few questions regarding the house meter (pic below - sorry, don't know how to rotate the pic):

1) Can you please advice whether below meter is 1-phase or 3-phase? Location is Puncak Jalil.

2) Can I relocate this meter to column next to the front gate? If 'yes', may I know roughly how much (like deposit with TNB, relocation fee, etc)? I feel that the workmanship is really poor...so many exposed wires running directly above the main door, so ugly and scary at the same time, like anytime the whole thing will catch fire or something. blink.gif

3) What are the 1 black and 2 grey things besides and above the meter? (Sorry, I am really poor with technical things). blush.gif

Thank you.

I would like to know if my previous owner did modify tnb meter and now I would like to widen my gate which need to move the gate pillar and tnb meter inside the pillar. Understand that I need to fill in the form at tnb office and they will get their people to come and check for this job. I am wondering when tnb moving the meter will they able to notice the meter has been modify before? My electricity usage bill is almost the same average as the previous owner. Need advice, thanks in advance.

Either they know now or later. Because when they replace with digital meter they take your average one year (some say 6 months) usage bill on the digital meter and do a reversed charge back. I was in ss15 tnb office in 2012 to claim back overcharge by tnb. I saw few house owner trying to negotiate with the officer how settle the reversed charge if 10 over thousands ringgit :0 I ask one of the officer why so high they reversed charge? The officer told me how they work it out, and suspect the owner tamper the meter and they are trying to be reasonable not wanting to bring them to court just ask them pay the amount.

Good luck.

There is a way to check using kettle and some calculation.

For easy way, just pay some electrician to check for you. They will open your db box and check some suspicious extra wiring from behind.

I too encountered the same problem as I was the third owner of my current house. After living there for the past 5 years, I requested TNB to change the meter as I realised the electricity bill getting lower each month although the usage was almost the same. Upon changing the meter, the found there is a wire tampering the meter. They issued me with a letter and I went to their office to meet up their revenue officer. I told them it is hard for me to prove who did it and I am prepared to pay for the differences tariff during my stay (since the day I change the TNB ownership to my name) as I did enjoyed a lower tariff. They agreed and they charged me around RM800 for the differences.

With so much opposition from the people, how can it not draw any attention to the news or any MP to look into it. God damn it.
