Ok here's my short review based on the 10 something hours I have put into, before meeting any new monsters nor subspecies.
Graphics: 8 Screen size isn't really a problem with the 3DS, but the 400 x 240 resolution is. Everything in the game is very well animated, in fact the smoothest I have seen in any MH game. However there isn't much details into everything as well, especially the items' icons in the item box. I have no idea how 3d in 3DS works, but in MH it's just different layers of flat polygons displayed on screen instead of something zooming out proportionally. It's really a hit or miss.
Sound: 8 No Pro Logic II support do affect those who usually hunt in surround sound setup environment, which I am. Otherwise the BGM and effects are unusually clear for a Nintendo handheld.
Control: 2 Bad, really bad. The 3DS is just too crampy, the analog stick and L button position are to close to each other. And the upper and lower screen weight balance makes it even worse, making my hands tired after only an hour or so, or immediately if you are in a action filled quest. Hope slidepad can compensate this.
Gameplay: 8 for Tri hunters, 10 for the rest Everything stays intact, to the original Tri formula. The farm system is very tedious, and free roaming in Moga forest can be extremely frustrating especially in the gamer's climax stage. Random appearance of gathering spots in the map is back, which can be good or bad. I also find out that this game is more generous in accuracy. Something I thought I had missed actually hit, something I failed to aimed actually destroyed that specific part. Good for noobs like me.

tq for review. really hoping that the slidepad will compensate for the controls. i think it will make a huge difference as they sculpted the pad into something more ergonomic. anyway, i disagree with one part of your review and i took the liberty to correct it for you QUOTE(gundamalpha @ Dec 15 2011, 10:33 AM) Something I thought I had missed actually hit, something I failed to aimed actually destroyed that specific part. That's for 3DS review, not MH3G review I think it can last me a whole night though, with medium brightness, LAN off and 3d off.

dunno about others but i believe the default touchscreen controls (with a little user customization if necessary) should be given a chance or at least a playtest. Capcom has done well in supporting Nintendo platform in recent times. can see they at least put in effort to compliment what the game is running on with decent (and sometimes great) result. i honestly couldn't get into the PSP iterations too bcos of the controls as well ... could never get used to it. might also just be the old brain which doesn't want to adapt ... *deja vu comment* even the Wii iteration which got a lot of pre-game and post-game launch criticism for having the wiimote+nunchuk scheme ... i think i did fine with it. swimming or otherwise ... perhaps just not as intuitive for some particular weapon types ... I have tried the touchscreen control but it couldn't solve the issue, may be that's because I'm never good in touch screen to begin with rather the touch control problem.

yea, as i was implying ... sometimes it's just us ... not used or don't have that knack for certain control type/design. just urging the other ppl to give it a chance ... instead of just foregoing it altogether QUOTE(gundamalpha @ Dec 15 2011, 03:32 PM) I have tried the touchscreen control but it couldn't solve the issue, may be that's because I'm never good in touch screen to begin with rather the touch control problem. I do understand some might be able to handle the 3DS better than I do, however I'm just voicing out my problem with the controls based on my own experience. If clawing on the PSP is difficult, then most would find having no finger before the thumb even more difficult unless you are using the touch screen control and actually good at it.

Been playing awhile, and yes, getting the nostalgia I'm playing Tri on the 3DS.
As for controls, the extension pad does make a whole easier for underwater. Customization of the touchscreen area is a good idea.
As for village quests, I think we can refer to wikia for the key quests.

Further addition: Saving takes a long long time as well, can be frustrating when you are in hot blood mode. And found out 1 thing, other than low rank and high rank for both village and port, there's also G rank exclusively for port
