Insitu Pacific has announced that it has signed a contract with Unmanned Systems Technology (UST) for one ScanEagle system for leasing in Malaysia.

UST is a subsidiary of Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM), and the contract was signed during DSA 2012 in Kuala Lumpur on 18 April.

The contract is part of an extension of the Malaysian Armed Forces ' UAV leasing contract that sees the ScanEagle beinbg added to an existing leasing arrangement that currently operates the CTRM Aludra UAV.

' CTRM is a highly professional company that is leading the way in the aerospace market in the Asia Pacific, ' Richard Hutchinson, Boeing International’s VP for South East Asia said at the signing.

' Boeing, through our subsidiary Insitu Pacific, is proud to be a partner with CTRM for this programme and we look forward to further increasing our collaboration with CTRM in the Malaysian marketplace in the near future. '

' We value our relationship with CTRM and we are pleased to provide our proven ScanEagle UAS to support CTRM in meeting emerging operational requirements, ' Andrew Duggan, MD of Insitu Pacific added. ' CTRM are absolutely committed to providing highly advanced UAS solutions for their customers in Malaysia and we are committed to supporting them in achieving that. '

Rheinmetall Defence Offers Passive Protection for Warship

State-of-the-art systems for the Malaysian military

Located amid some of the world’s most strategic shipping lanes, Malaysia is an influential member of the Asia-Pacific region, serving as an intermediary between the West and the Islamic world.

Modern, well-equipped armed force and security services form an important component of its multilateral security policy. The Defence Services Asia (DSA) tradeshow takes place in Kuala Lumpur 16-19 April. Rheinmetall will be on hand at DSA, showcasing an impressive array of products and services.

Whether the requirement is protecting friendly forces from optical, optronic or electronic surveillance; supplying innovative vehicle protection systems; or safeguarding critical infrastructure from attack, Rheinmetall offers a full range of system solutions – all from a single source.

Among the passive protection systems on show at DSA is the VERhA line of products from Rheinmetall Verseidag Ballistic Protection Systems (RVBP). These include lightweight high-performance materials which can be built into special vehicles, helicopters and ships for protecting passengers and crew. Visitors can also inspect inserts for ballistic vests made of these materials.

For the first time, Rheinmetall will be presenting a three-dimensional ceramic composite component at DSA used for hardening the driver’s cab of the new protected HX trucks made by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV). It is earmarked for Australia’s LAND 121 programme, for which RMMV was selected as preferred bidder. Another exhibit from the “VERhA-Land” portfolio are the doors from the HX series, which were also developed using high-tech composite materials.

Ultra-light spall materials from Rheinmetall Verseidag Protection Systems will be used in a forthcoming armoured vehicle-program. Specially developed for the purpose, it performs particularly well in overmatch situations, significantly reducing the fragmentation cone despite the low addition to the vehicle’s total weight.

In the naval domain, RVBP develops and produces customer-specific passive protection solutions (“VERhA-Marine”). On behalf of the Malaysian Navy, for example, RVBP has equipped the first six MEKO A-100 Kedah-class warships with composite armour.

In addition, Rheinmetall Chempro will be presenting its Mobile Modular Protection System, or MMS. Reinforcing checkpoints, hardening shelters in combat outposts and forward operating bases and shielding portholes or machine gun positions on board ships are just a few of the potential applications for the highly flexible MMS, which can be quickly deployed in all climate zones in accordance with STANAG 4569, even in difficult terrain.

In the realm of active protection, Rheinmetall supplies high-performance “soft kill” solutions for ground vehicles, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and ships. Smoke/obscurant protection systems like “Rosy” render vehicles invisible to the enemy if attacked, while Rheinmetall’s MASS naval countermeasures system now sets the standard worldwide. A decoy-based system, MASS produces phantom targets that reliably divert enemy missiles from their intended targets. “Hard kill” systems serve as a last line of defence, engaging incoming projectiles immediately before they hit their target, as with Rheinmetall’s ADS vehicle protection system.

One of Rheinmetall Defence’s special strengths is the integration of new and existing products and systems into a highly effective whole.

Weststar To Replace Military's 4WDs Worth RM500 Million

By Nor Baizura Basri

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Weststar Group will replace all the 3,600 units of the Armed Forces' Land Rover Defender four-wheel drives (4WDs) with its 4x4 GS Cargo for a contract sum of RM500 million.

Its Group Senior Vice President, Automotive, Datuk Nik Hamdam Nik Hassan said the replacement programme would be in batches for the next three to five years.

"We have started supplying to Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and have delivered 11 units. We are currently building 10 units. The ministry has ordered 100 units for this year," he told Bernama in an interview on the sidelines of the 13th Defence Services Asia 2012 (DSA 2012) here today.

Nik Hamdam said the base vehicles will be coming from Thailand but the whole upgrading, modification and fabrication according to military specifications will be done in Malaysia with 40 per cent local parts.

Even though the contract was signed last year, he said the company was unable to deliver many units last year due to a shortage in supply parts coming from Thailand but is confident of delivering more this year.

In addition, Weststar is also pushing for its weapon platform, a specialised vehicle that is configured to carry various types of weapons with four crews, he said.

"We are still waiting for Mindef to decide whether our vehicle is suitable for military application. We are now pitching to become the prime contractor to supply the weapon platform for Mindef," he said.

Nik Hamdam said the company's facility in Pattaya, Thailand has just completed 40,000 units of weapon platform delivery to the Afghanistan military police.

Besides Malaysia and Afghanistan, Weststar has also provided vehicles for military use to the United States, Singapore and Thailand.

The company has also supplied the Malaysian government previously via subsidiary Weststar LDV, a joint venture with the now-insolvent UK firm LDV, which provided customised panel vans and transporters specifically for government agencies and services.

Besides automotive, Weststar is also involved in aviation business, which was currently its major contributor accounting for 60 per cent of group revenue, Nik Hamdam said.

The remaining contribution came from automotive business, he added.

The DSA 2012, which saw the participation of 850 companies, ended its four-day forum and exhibition today.

You do have to understand that generation kill is through the eyes of privates and corporals so the problems is usually exaggerated

But yes, operationally the invasion of iraq was a disaster. Before they crossed the border they bought a gazillion chickens so they could mount the cages on their humvees ..

When you are on the front line, being pounded left right and centre while your own clip is empty it certainly would seem so. The resources are there, but not distributed properly.

The USAF operates on a "Hi-Low" Mix of aircraft. In the 70s these were the "Hi" F-15 and "Lo" F-16 . You could buy 3 F-16s for the price of a single F-15.

Same thing now, F-22 as the "Hi" and F-35 "Lo". I guess they are trying to cover every aspect of Quantity > Quality | Quantity < Quality

The ScanEagle UAV is one of the top of the line UAV and it is a sweetener for the FA18F deal.

It is a win win situation for a barter trade for the Pindad Rimau with Proton car industries, as Indonesia is introducing the APC into Malaysia and Malaysian cars into the Indonesian car market, a potential growth for both businesses to flourish.

DSA Malaysia 2012: Safran's Malaysian expansion strengthens Rafale's MRCA bid
By Jon Grevatt
4/18/2012

Turbomeca and Snecma – subsidiaries of French group Safran – have expanded their presence in the Malaysian aerospace and defence market through investment and industrial collaboration deals with local firm Global Turbine Asia (GTA), it emerged at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.

Both deals have strengthened Dassault's hand in bidding for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA) requirement.

Under the terms of the collaboration agreement, GTA will service the Snecma M88 turbojet engine that powers the Dassault Rafale if the French fighter wins the USD1.5 billion MRCA contract, which is also being contested by Russia's Sukhoi Su-30MKM, the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Saab's Gripen NG.

GTA confirmed to IHS Jane's on 17 April that Turbomeca has recently completed the acquisition of a 30 per cent stake in the Malaysian company. Meanwhile, Snecma signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GTA that is intended to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services to Snecma engines in service in civil and military sectors in Malaysia.

They have to give better deal than that.
