Can I start using the Nikon D5100 with a 50/35mm G lens without the kit lens itself?

If you want to use a one lens setup I think the 35 would be more appropriate, just crop later in post processing if you want your subject to be bigger ^^

This is exactly what I will do if I'm gonna buy. I will probably prefer 50mm rather than 35mm

Why?
I thought the 35mm can capture more in its frame?

Actually kAI using D700 in the video, FF, so, if in D5100, its not exactly what Kai want, still pretty valid with point 1 & 5

The 40mm f/2.8 can take macro shots but the 35mm f/1.8 can't right?
For landscapes and still taking macro shots, which is the more suitable lens?

how much macro u want? until can see the insect's eyes? if yes then use the 40 but u canot take wide angle shots lah, cos 40 on a crop becomes 60.
but if u can live without the macro, get the 35mm, can crop and enlarge pictures later, and its wide enough on a crop sensor for landscapes ( tapi u gotta move waaaayyyy back lah to get really wide angle ).

f/1.8 all the way versus f/2.8 @ infinity, and eventually become f5.x at 1:1 magnification is the major difference.

Macro lens aperture will become smaller as you go larger ratio, that is the characteristic of it. laugh.gif

if you often shoot close up getting a macro lens is a good choice
