Speed at my house is @ 4mbps download, 1.2mbps upload.

I have a question, I want to apply for multisim and I asked maxis CSO on telephone if I can only specify I want 'data only' so I can pass to my dad. But the CSO said the simcard still has capabilities to make calls and send out SMS.

But when I see others here trying to rent out their multisim, they said its data only? How is it possible?

Btw, I also want to use the multisims for home broadband.

What method of testing you guys use?

And which router/USB combo is recommended?

I intend to get the TPlink MR3420 as it is cheap and TP link has thus far served me pretty well.

The multisim works like this

There is 1 primary and 5 secondary (max).

The primary you can designate to receive and make calls/SMS.

The secondary, it is claimed by the tele-CSO to be able to make calls/sms but unable to receive. It also shares the unlimited data.

My concern here is if the card is lost, dropped, or etc, and someone use it to call out/overseas, my phone bill gonna explode.

But I see from trading subforums, they seem to have data only. Even fruitie also said hers has only data, but the teleCSO told me that outgoing calls/sms is by default and cannot be deactivated?! So how like that.. rofl...

Anyway, my ping is extremely high @ 250ms.

Also, which modem do you recommend and which seller?
Btw i never use USB modem before.

I quote this from maxis website:

QUOTE
With the Maxis Multi-SIM 1 Line service, you can assign a single Maxis number to all your mobile devices, regardless of whether you use multiple mobile phones or a variety of gadgets (e.g. a mobile phone, PDA and a BlackBerry®).

Other benefits include:
You receive all charges from multiple SIM cards on a single itemized bill.
You don't have to transfer a SIM card from device to device.
You can make outgoing calls, SMS, MMS, Video Calls, Push Email, and use the internet simultaneously.
You receive incoming voice calls, SMS, MMS and video calls on the device of your choice.
You can use the service in Malaysia and overseas.
You can retrieve voicemail from a single mailbox.
Fruitie, when you apply for multisim, did you specify anything? Mine is actually under corporate, so need to write the letter and specify everything clearly on the letter.

Okay, I kinda found the FAQ on the simcard call/receive thing.
QUOTE
Question:
AM I ABLE TO MAKE CALLS USING ANY OF THE SIM CARDS THAT WERE PROVIDED TO ME UPON REGISTRATION?

Answer:
You would be able to use the SIM cards 2 hours after registration.
If you have requested for a data only rate plan on one of your SIM cards then you would not be able to make or receive calls on that SIM card.

The stupid thing about corporate line is must have company letterhead etc etc and everything specify nicely inside, even the person walking into the maxis center name and IC need to write down. :s

Btw, has anyone tried ZTE691?

Icon505 and UMG1831, any recommended seller on lelong that I should approach? Because I tried looking for it locally (i'm in jb) and I can't find any at danga city IT mall. All carry D-link USBmodem.

Yeah, I saw the iCon 505 only got one seller, although the name iCon doesn't really instill much confidence. lol...

I need to get 3 USB modems, so don't want to be in a situation where I buy one that is crap then end up suffer.

The price difference for me between ZTE691 and E1762 not that big.
Any simcard chip issues with either MF691 and UMG1831?
I haven't received my multisims yet because need to get the co to issue the letter then only can go down to change my simcard.

Btw the UMG1831, I don't like the design where the USB connector is retractable. I had thumdrives with that form factor before and it goes loose after prolonged usage.

Btw, I don't understand your sentence "I have a ZTE MF622 and soon gonna be 4 years, still kicking well. Just that it is a HSDPA modem and I would like to have a taste on HSPA so bought a used E1762."

HSPA is a combination of HSDAP and HSUPA. Isn't a HSDPA modem a HSPA modem?

Added on January 8, 2012, 12:14 amOh! I realised why my download the ping was so high.

It was on net APN.
Changed to unet and this is what i got

ping: 78ms
dl: 7.34Mbps
ul: 1.99Mbps

What are you using to connect to Maxis now?

Now, i am using my phone, so wondering how I can identify if its UMTS900/2100.

Doesn't exactly state on my phone.

If I use speedtest does it state there?

I do notice that sometimes i get HSPA, others I get UMTS when I view in speedtest.

Huh? If cannot use this modem then how?
Can we specify to maxis? Because if needed I will need to put the specification inside the letter.

I haven't gotten my multisims yet, going to get them this saturday.

:s mafan because need to go maxis service center with co letter head to change.

Actually what's the reason for being unable to use the simcard due to chip size?

Actually the contact point is the same 6 points, right?

I called maxis teleCSO and she told me the multisim they giving is still the big chip one??!!

I'm a corp customer though, so I'm not sure if it affects. I told her that the small chip is giving issues, but she told me they only have 2 types of multisim now.

1) Normal mini sim with big gold chip
2) micro sim with small gold chip

She did say got compatibility issue with 2 SE phones.
Xperia arc S and xperia play(i think)

Everything else she said no issues.

lol @ fruitie, u also end up buying the icon.

@chuah , so you walk into maxis CS and they solve for you?
The bugger on the telephone tell me "sir u have to purchase another modem" what laaaaaaa this solution.

So as long as the modem is deemed 'compatible by specs' they will have to solve the issue right?

@Chuah

Yeah most of the answers is wrong username/password/apn. So I tell the CSM that the simcard is the issue? But what if they say the simcard can work in some other modem, like E1762? Then tell me the modem KO. Basically at this point of time its my word (that the simcard is causing the problem), to a something visual (that the icon 505 isn't working with the sim but the sim works with another modem).

They can just claim that the modem is kapoot.

On a side note.
Does MDMA work with a 3G router? I plan to connect it to 3G router instead of using it purely attached to a laptop.

@chuah,

I see, but what if I got no other SIM to use? But I suppose they should have some broadband SIMs inside there for 'testing purposes' right?

I don't mind huawei though, but TBH I have no idea how to get it to work with a 3G router.

I am reading: http://www.nerve.org.za/mdma/readme.txt
But it pretty much only pertains to when the USB modem is connected to a computer.

Oh! So I just plug and play into the router good enough? But if I need to change band, will there be any issues? I am planning to get Tplink.

As for the sim, I think can ask them to provide a sim to show that it works.
Or just get the e1762 and wait for future dual band datacard from huawei.
Asking because need to eventually get 3 datacards.

I see I see.
Wow on ebay the e372 is expensive.
42mbps O_O , at that speed I think before I blink probably finish download some stuff.

But even if I got the small chip, will it work with the e372? Or like all other high speed modem it'd probably be non compatible as well.
