I'm adopting 2 kittens of about 1month+ old, putting in a 2-3storey cage.can anyone share pics of their setup/equipments needed and some advices please?previously kept cats running free at home and they pee and poo in toilet.this is gonna be new to me..

I bought most of my cages. There are two wooden cages I made them myself; one outside the house - deserted because of mosquito & another one located in the garage for my outdoor cat. I have 6 adult indoor cats & I put them in the cages before I go to sleep & also during daytime on weekday. Out of the 6 cats only two allowed to freely roaming in the house 24/7.

My advice is go get the biggest & tallest cage you can afford. This is my personal preference because I like them to have a lot of space because they spend a lot of time in the cage during weekday.

One thing I don't like about cat cage is that there is no space for water & food bowls. Since the cage is huge I just DIY it. The cage was made by KWZONE (C10 cage). I use cardboard to cover the bottom section because that is where their litter box located. 2 in 1 actually, the cardboard also their scratching post. I need to change it later. The cdrom drive, wireless modem & a block of wood - I use double tape to hold them in place - they are for holding the bowls in place. It just temporary. Lily - the orange+black cat - is very naughty. The other two is mixed of Siamese & domestic cats. I also put the cage near the window because they like to hangout near the window. As you can see no bedding because of the hot weather lately & they like it this way.

Her name is Puteh. I'm very bad in identifying cat breeds. So I need help in identifying this cat breed. I thought she is Siamese but she doesn't show common Siamese cat behaviour. One example, she is not vocal. Even when breakfast or dinner time, she just sit there calmly staring at me without "saying" anything, just waiting for me to give her food. My other cats will already vocal even if I'm late just a couple of minutes.

Hope he is ok now. Is the monitor lizard is similar to biawak? Over here we have biawak. Whenever biawak sees a cat, i.e. a cat stalking biawak, the biawak will raised the body, possibly to scare the cat. I don't know how your cat can go fight a monitor lizard but I'm not surprise. A year or two years ago I saw my cat trying to capture a snake. Of course the snake got away. I was actually panicking at the time because the snake try to "patuk" my cat but my cat "elak" like it was nothing.

There is a recent incident, like last week. My oldest cat got out of the house through the roof ceiling. It was at night. She got a fight with musang. She is actually chasing the musang after that. I was able to tracked my cat at my neighbour house around 5.30 - 6.00 a.m. Minor injury on her feet & trauma.

She is white & it was pitch black because my neighbour not at home. This is kampung house. Imagine that I'm chasing a white object in the dark. Sound like I'm looking for trouble chasing a white object in the dark, scary! I don't really care at the time though. The only thing in my mind at the time was my cat safety. Hehe.

to be honest i dun expect a cat to beat a monitor lizard. they are in fact one of the most dangerous foes to a cat... your cat is lucky... i guess a hard lesson learnt...

glad he is alive...  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif  thumbup.gif

I don't think so too. My cats & the cats in my neighbourhood don't go near to monitor lizard. They (cats) keep their distance when they see monitor lizard & monitor lizard also avoid them. A couple of times I saw monitor lizard raised their body when it realized a cat nearby. In all occurrence cats kept their distance or back away.

My other cat is sick, he seems listless and been lethargic for the whole day. He seems to have also lost his voice, nothing comes out when he opens his mouth to call. I'm taking him to the vet first thing in the morning.
Any of you experienced such symptoms with your cats before?

*
That's too vague. How old is he? Is this one of the cats that you exiled out of the house? He probably ate something that he should not eat. Hopefully he get better soon. Let us know.

A quick update, sent my sick cat to the vet this morning and he's feeling better now after a shot and some antibiotics. Still no idea what's causing it though.
And the other cat's gone back into confinement, since he did his thing again this morning. Perhaps will have to keep him in the room for 2 weeks or so until he's learned again.
Thanks to kizwan and spunkberry, and whoever else might help for the tips. It's quite a steep learning curve, since my previous indoor/outdoor cat has never caused me much grief before.

*
I know. I have no problem with my cats & kitten live indoor & outdoor before but lately (started earlier this year) kitten easily get cat flu. The first cat got the flu was my outdoor cat but he recover quickly. Because he stayed in the house after he got sick & not long after he got well, my two indoor cats got flu too. One of them pretty bad, got blood came out with saliva. Antibiotics given by vet helps in fighting the infections fortunately. A few of my tenant's kitten died because of this. Right now I put my tenant's kitten, 3 kitten at least 3 months old, in my house. One of them free of cat flue & the other two doing well recovering from flu. I don't let them go outside until they fully recover from flu. Total of 5 kitten of my tenant's kitten died recently because of flu. I wish I brought all of them come stay inside the house but it's difficult because the're not my kitten.

That's sad to hear.
Cat flu usually got physical symptoms like watery eyes and snot from the nose right? Strangely my cat didn't have those, so not really sure what it is. Or maybe the vet did tell me but I was too busy trying to restrain my cat to listen, he really hates going to the vet.  sweat.gif

*
Yup. Also eyes are swollen & red. On kitten, usually with a discharge that is often filled with pus caused by bacteria infection. One of the eyes will be closed all the time because it's swollen & most of the time it's the left eye. If the kitten remain outside the house, they will not survive. 99% chance they will die, especially the kitten who no longer active, just sit there & refused to eat/drink. I tried nursing around 3 - 4 kitten that already in this condition. It always the same; kitten lose appetite around 1 to 2 days, then suddenly resume eating like very hungry & then on the next day or the day after, it will eat a little, loose appetite again, look tired & then few hours later it died. All I can do is make them comfortable.

how much does the golden cat food BTW? also, which aeon?

i used to feed my cat prodiet, and then a mixture of prodiet and tesco cat food, and am thinking of changing to a different brand. is there any decent cat food that costs less than RM100 for a 6/7kg pack? can't afford any premium brand so if there's no other suggestion, i'm going back to prodiet/tesco mixture for my cat.
*
I can't recommend any brand because some brands not available everywhere. I'm pretty sure you can find cheaper cat food at your local pet shop & make sure the main protein source is not corn. If the main protein source is fish meal and/or poultry meal and/or meat, then it's good cat food. I like to mixed kibbles with Friskies can food (fish) once everyday for additional protein source.

I recently adopted a stray kitten probably about 6 months old. I'm keeping her as outdoor cat. I've provided a cage with litter box, carpet and food and drink bowls. She will get into the cage for meal and to pee/poo. She sleep mostly at the porch but never in the cage. I'm trying to train her to sleep in the cage in case I need to go outstation but also for her safety at night as there are other stray toms sometime visiting at night. Last night is first time I lock her up. She complaint a bit but the problem is she slept at her litter box instead of her bed. It kind of gross. I've triad moving her to her bed several times last night but she hop over to the litter box right after. Is there a way to train her to sleep at her bed? Thanks.
*
It's first time you locked her up in the cage. Give her time to adjust to new routine. She will stop sleeping in the litter box. What kind of cage you have there? Double or triple storey?

Yes, first time locked up. After 2 days, I let her out already and made the cage entrance just enough for her to get in to prevent other stray cats from having a buffet at her expense. Just chased one out yesterday but he already finished her special weekend dinner. Now she is back to sleeping under the car. It is a single level cage about 2.5ft. I plan to get a condo and auto feeder for her by year end to lock her up for a week and see what happen. That is how long she will get locked-up during CNY.

I also bought her a hammock but she does not seem to have any interest in it  sad.gif

Thanks for all the suggestion.
*
I did used to put litter box outside for stray cats & the first night I put the litter box, they sleep in it. The sands litter feels cosier to them probably. So I brought out another clean litter box, filled it with sands litter & put a towel on top of it & it worked in preventing them from sleeping in the actual litter box.

Probably it's hot/warm day/night. Probably that is the reason why your cat like to sleep in the litter box.

Try put a cardboard box in the cage. Find one small enough to fit in the cage & big enough for the cat to sleep in it. Boxes are like magnet for cats. Good chance your cat will sleep in the box instead of litter box.

One of my cat like to sleep in the hammock when she was a kitten. Out of three, only one.

I've read that Friskies and Whiskas are bad cat food. Any feedback on 1st Choice from Canada? It has DL-Methionine but not Brewer yeast. Price about double of Friskies and kind of affordable to me without breaking my bank with RC or Blackwood. Thanks.

Look good to me. It use chicken as main protein source.

Any reason to why you're switching? I'm still evaluating various types of cat litter myself. What are pellets like, don't they clump as well or are they like hybrid between silica and clay?
I was using clay exclusively before this, Cat-san brand. Decided it was nonsense after a while as it doesn't clump well making cleaning process a hassle. So I switched to another cheaper brand, Twinkle Star or something. Excellent clumping so far. Also using silica which seems to be the best as to maintenance.

*
Wood-based litter don't clump. Pellets usually look like this:-
user posted image

When the cat peed on the wood pellets, it will break down to dust which you can discard later. I use pine wood cat litter & I use self-cleaning litter box like this:-
user posted image

Much easier to discard the dust using self-cleaning litter box. Of course you can use regular litter box & discard the entire content after all pellets turn to dust. You will need to discard the excrement when you see them though since it sit on top of the litter. Surprisingly they cover the smell quite well IMO. Tips: put the litter box in well ventilated area.

Wood-based litter is economical, especially if you have many cats. If you discard the wood dust regularly, there will be no problem with dust.

I think I saw another form of wood-based litter. They in form of wood dust instead of in cylindrical compressed pellets.

Would your cat cover his stool with the litter? Is yes, how he do it as it is in pallet form or mostly become dust when wet? My cat would cover his with litter sand. Thanks.
*
Depends on the cats. Most of my cats (that are using pine wood litter) like to cover the stool. Mostly because they used clumping sand litter before. The smaller the wood pellets, the easier they can cover the stool.

I already made mistake by buying the Feline Fresh pallet type instead of clumping type, it is cheaper. Now no choice but to use it, mixing with my Pura clay sand.  cry.gif Result is not so good as the clay is not clumping as good anymore but smell is good though. Will continue to use until finish and revert back to clumping type later  doh.gif

I'm also feeding dried mealworm to my kitten since my hamster not eating it, mix them with kibbles. Rich in protein, fat and phosphorus. Is it okay to feed live mealworm as I'll not buying anymore dried mealworm?
*
Yeah, the wood dust prevent the sand from clumping but like you said the wood dust cover the smell pretty good. Why don't you keep using the Feline Fresh pallet. Just try it out for a while. I've used Feline Fresh before. It's RM20 per bag right? Feline Fresh does not available at my local pet shop but they have Paw Mark. It's bigger pellets than Feline Fresh & only RM30 per bag (9kg bag).

Here is my kitten, Lucky, probably about 7-8 months old. Was a stray that came to my house looking for food and affection more than 3 weeks ago. In the first week he still wandered around after lunch and came home during dinner time. Now he is always at home, somewhere within my house compound.

My kitten like to cover his stool and I suspect he would not able to do that with pallet type. I'll see what happened later. If he found no problem, I might continue with it. Aeon selling it for rm20.90 per bag of 3.18kg. Or I might try the clumping type of Feline Fresh at rm26.90 for 2.7kg bag but promised to be more efficient equivalent to 6.4kg of clay type  hmm.gif
*
Feline Fresh pine wood pellets small enough. Should be no problem. But yeah, since you're comfortable with clumping sands, you should stick with it though. The Feline Fresh Clumping Pine Litter sound interesting.

Ya, I'm doing the transition. Not sure whether he pee less or not since pallet type broke down into powder but there were less clumps than before. He also pee or spray in my wife's car yesterday when she left the door open unattended. Not sure is because of the new litter or he is just marked his territory but my wife was mad and that is for sure  rclxub.gif

Even though we don't allow him to enter our house but he took opportunity to explore whenever possible, went to different room each time he entered and now starts going straight to upstairs  sweat.gif
*
He is marking his territory, also a calling card saying "Hey ladies! Lucky was here!". biggrin.gif It's time to neuter the cat. He will live happily & healthy after. Also you won't need to worry he spraying in the house.

I was thinking about it but I decided not to neuter him. Don't want to make him pondan for his own sake. Two days ago he fight off an adult cat almost twice his size from encroaching into his territory (my house compound lah). Of course we intervene as well. This black cat came to my house several times in the past, looking for food. I post once that it finish off my cat's special weekend dinner couple of weeks ago. Before this, my cat just look at him and avoid his path. if neutered, how he is going to defend himself in future.
*
Where you get that info? Neutered cat doesn't prevent him from protecting himself or his territory. He doesn't turn to pondan. shocking.gif

I've seen un-neutered cats died on the road because he is crossing the road to find female cats to mates. Have your cat go "jalan-jalan" during daytime & come back home before meals? Before you know it, his "jalan-jalan" time will be longer, only come back at night, later come back the next morning, later missing for a day or two or a week & later possibly doesn't come back at all. Neutered cat is less likely to roam.
