Hi All,

Looking for a band to jam with is tough. It's even tougher to find one that does it purely for fun (not a full-time job) and even if you did find one, the schedules don't fit with all the members, especially those who have a day job like me.

Most often than not, we give up looking for one and just play/practice with the comfort of our homes. What if you can change that? What if you would be able to jam with your fellow musicians without gathering them in one place, that you could learn and play at your own pace? What if you will be given a chance to improve yourself, would you take it?

If you would take that chance, please read on.

So I am wondering if any of you here are interested working on a collaboration project covering songs of our choice. I am a noob rhythm guitarist myself and I have cover some songs for practice biggrin.gif . Might as well be serious about it and if I can't join/get some people in a band, then why not do it in our own leisure time, wherever and whenever.

Basically, this is what we would need to start the project:

1. Choice of songs to cover, or any original songs would do too
2. Able to use Ableton (i.e. Live 8) or any DAW that would suit you best, this including your choice of VST (i.e. Guitar Rig 4, Amplitube) through an audio interface (i.e. Line6, Behringer, etc.). Why need a DAW and VST? Because this will standardize our recordings and editing the final work should be easier, aside from the better quality of recordings.
3. Able to use Sony Vegas for video recording and editing. If we choose to do purely audio, then this is not necessary. But if you're not shy to show-off your skills and put on youtube, this will be handy. For more on this: Youtube Collaboration

And this is what we would do:
1. Using the choice of song, we would build the parts one by one.
2. You record your part and send to each members.
3. Each will have their own turn to put up their ideas into the song (more improvisation is better).
4. Each work will be collated and final editing will be done. Final copy will be sent to each for approval or if changes will be done if needed.

This is for fun purposes only and as a way to learn from fellow musicians. So any of you who have a spare time, kindly PM me and start this.
Imagine if we do a full band cover, that should be epic!

This is our first collaboration cover:

Next Cover: NONE. On hiatus due to work commitments

Note:
1. This is for fun purposes only (non-commercial).
2. No copyright infringement is intended for the songs that are chosen for covers.

Thank you for your time. Rock on! cool.gif

Not really br0, as long as you can record cleanly, should be no problem.
You can directly plug your guitar on your pc (with the adaptor of course). Have you tried to use any , like Amplitube 3, Guitar Rig 4, Audacity, FL Studio or Ableton Live?

- Jar Of Hearts (rock version) by Christina Perri
- Secrets (rock version) by One Republic
- Famous Last Words by My Chemical Romance
- Mama Mia (rock version) by Abba

Now we got a bassist, rhythm g, lead g.. now any drummer and vocalist interested?

Deadfrog, I have practice 'Secrets' today. But havent uploaded to youtube (ayam shy) haha.

Check this out, some solo improvisations on the middle and last part, and I've added the rhythm guitar too.

the song begin with cello (violin for me) part, but i'll add in the violin once the whole structure is firm, just a guitar track will do. i don't want to be the core person of the project, just want to add violin track for fun. leave the bars necessary for the violin will do.

Hey bro, good job!

If you are using amplitube, you can choose the built-in presets in there. You can see at the bottom there are 1 to 4 tracks. Usually I load the song (or backing track) at the first slot (numbered 1), for this you need to turn off the amplitube effects so it wont get messed up (theres an icon at the very bottom, farthest right). And for the guitar, you can use slot number 2, turn on the effects icon and choose a preset. You can also just record straight away using clean channel, and at playback you can experiment with the presets. Once the choose the desired preset you can export the tracks. Oh btw, if you have time, download also Ableton. This is easier to use during recording. You will need the Amplitube as a plugin instead (me, i refer guitar rig 4 as plugin). Il take screenshots later and show it to you.

You can also check the tutorial at youtube:

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

For our first collaboration, we will cover 'Secrets' as this is an easy song to play with.

Song details:
Tempo: 148 bpm (as per original), ensure to use metronome always when recording.

Key: D Major, with chords progression D-F#m-Bm-G

Length: 3:55 with proper ending (no fading)

Intro: Violin solo (by 'little ice) will go on for 8 measures followed by vocals (violin plays for another 8 measures.

Guitars:

Rhythm (Dist) and Solo (2 parts) - Me and Deadfrog will work on this, need to discuss the improvisation parts
Bass - More on this later.

Drummer - More on this later. I'm not sure if a drummer can record a clean one using acoustic drum, else we resort to electronic drums since it has a midi output that can be recorded directly to pc. If we can't find one, then we do it using drum software like cakewalk, etc. (prefers acoustic drum). Anyone please?

Vocals - We currently don't have a vocalist, though I can find one. It will be epic if a female will sing this song (note: need to change the song key if ever). Something like this:

i'm not sure soundcloud allows copyrighted material to be published publicly. i guess if it's private it's ok. i found another site worth exploring, it's an online DAW application. you can record directly via the web but the effects are pretty limited for free accounts. the site is http://www.indabamusic.com. i would think it is easier to work in an online DAW app as compared to soundcloud. we can add multiple tracks i.e. guitars, bass, drums, vox etc in a project and we can control the timing of the song as well a lot more easier. just like your regular DAW.

^Depends on the disclaimer type. Anyway, that online DAW looks nice. I'm still waiting reply from my friend whether he can do the drum tracks. I assume the drum and bass lines goes first, then guitar tracks and the vocals last.

Hi Bro,
You're welcome to join as we currently don't have any vocalist. I was also thinking maybe you can fill in the drums too. Would you be able to have a clean track sample for the drums just like in this drum cover:

Oh i mean can you re-record it and share to me? Maybe you can play around with other settings too (i.e. compression, etc) so I only need to adjust the volume thresholds only to make room for the vocals to stand a bit.

We don't have any drummer yet ;(

Do you mean you wanna digitally do beats? If so then my best bet would be FL Studio i guess?
But if you wanna record drums Ableton shouldn't be a problem.

LOL... i too was baffled by it initially when i 1st installed it. it's basically quite simple. u get the plug-in from the plug-in browser (click the little icon that says "plug-in" to view your plug-ins), which is at the left and drag it into a box which says Drop Audio Effects Here, which is at the bottom.

oh.. in order for ableton to find where are ur plug-ins. goto option -> preference -> file folder. there u can specify where ur plug-ins r located in ur harddrive.

i strongly suggest u read the manual. setting up for recording is quite challenging. playback is another challenging task, i don't recall reading it specifically in the manual on how to playback your recorded track. it's designed such to avoid accidental recording during playback. which imo, is a good feature.

Hm... This is very interesting. Can't wait for the final product biggrin.gif
Famous Last Words is really hard to sing. The singer need to hit high notes constantly. Besides, I think most songs by My Chemical Romance need to have a little 'attitude' or 'character' to it while delivering them. But then again, a cover shouldn't sound like the ori hehe.
I'm gonna keep on stalking this thread. brows.gif

Good luck guys. rclxms.gif

EDIT: Okay so I missed the part where it says that the song will be Grenade by Bruno Mars and not Famous Last Words by MCR sweat.gif
But it's even a more tricky song!
Okay Ima shut it. Bubbyes and goodluck.

think we drop 'jar of hearts' and 'grenade'. jar's too delicate to be spoiled. i don't like grenade's lyrics, if we play it loud it will sound like a loser venting off steam from a recent breakup with his girlfriend.

i propose something more cheerful like 'Big In Japan' by Alphaville

we'll keep Mama Mia and continue to work on Secrets

we'll keep Mama Mia and continue to work on Secrets

Since u guys haven't really decide to which songs to play, may I suggest one? laugh.gif
The song is called "Your Mistake" by Sister Hazel. Mind you, the title may be misleading, but give it a listen. And yeah, it's a happy song thumbup.gif

Bro, You're on the wrong thread!! vmad.gif

Deadfrog, listening to Big in Japan - dafuq its a retro! We would need a keyboardist to pull that off, unless you have a great idea if it can be done by guitar. let me know ok?
Unless we make it rock version, totally our own then should be ok. I'll ponder on this more.

wow this is a great idea. if you need a female vocalist for collab, do inform me ne. I'm more into Japanese songs, but would love to try English songs too.

Something like this, or maybe if you have any songs in mind that I'm able to work on:

Finally! Yes bro we need a drummer, can you do the drum part of 'Secrets' by One Republic?
It's an easy song to start with. We will be covering some challenging ones eventually.

Hi Kaoru,

This is a sample female cover of the song (its acoustic though), well, we are doing a rock cover so its up to you really how you make it your own.

OK. Just to share how I'd played the song the 2nd time. This time I'm not improvising. I've put/played the solo towards the end of the song. I've also leave a space where initial there was a guitar solo in the middle of the song.

So sorry for the crappy cover, 'terbabas' here and there....not accustomed to the song yet.

Busted around the line "Don't care if critics never jump in line", will always left the "never"...and I terbabas on the final part too, so please excuse me.

Since you guys seem to like to make rock versions of a song, check this out. Hands down, this is the best cover of Adele's song that exists.

This is a nice cover, it's definitely your own style rclxms.gif
Anyway, can you record the vocal track alone, without the backing track?

I agree with you bro.
Hmm, have you record the vocal part of Secrets? Im thinking maybe you and Kaoru can make a duet on this (i.e. 1st verse Male, 2nd verse female..)

I have been discussing with Wintersun and he's coming up with the sample drum tracks. I need to check whether his recording can be done cleanly or not.

For the others, we already have the guitar parts and all. I'll discuss with nablitz and you for your parts, I have already msg him to record the vocal track sample of his so I can evaluate where the duet would be.

Hope by next weekend we have all the samples, and proceed to re-record the final individual tracks.

Anyway, I've received Deadfrogs guitar riffs and your vocal sample.
Thank you guys!

Thats very nice of you, thank you so much smile.gif
I'm ok with it, but I do have some suggestions. Since is a duet, maybe we can try out this simple partitions. I'm imagining A is me (since intially the suggestion is for me to take the chorus part), and B is nabzblitz

I suggested this to create some sort of...balance so that the duet arrangement got a little exciting smile.gif Again, I leave it all to you guys to decide.

Secrets : One Republic
------------------------

A: I need another story
Something to get off my chest
My life gets kinda boring
Need something that I can confess

B : Til’ all my sleeves are stained red
From all the truth that I’ve said
Come by it honestly I swear
Thought you saw me wink, no
I’ve been on the brink, so

A :Tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away
This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

A: My god, amazing how we got this far
It’s like we’re chasing all those stars
Who’s driving shiny big black cars

B : And everyday I see the news
All the problems that we could solve
And when a situation rises
Just write it into an album
Singing straight, too cold
I don’t really like my flow, no, so

A : Tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away
This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

B : Oh, got no reason, got not shame
Got no family I can blame
Just don’t let me disappear
I’mma tell you everything

A : So tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away
This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away

A&B: So tell me what you want to hear
Something that were like those years
Sick of all the insincere
So I’m gonna give all my secrets away
This time, don’t need another perfect line
Don’t care if critics never jump in line
I’m gonna give all my secrets away
All my secrets away, All my secrets away

@Kaoru I like the balance idea but i personally think that my voice is better suited for the verse and yours for the chorus. hahaha. I THINK what we could do though is harmonize this part:
"And everyday I see the news
All the problems that we could solve
And when a situation rises
Just write it into an album
Singing straight, too cold
I don’t really like my flow, no, so"

"Oh, got no reason, got not shame
Got no family I can blame
Just don’t let me disappear
I’mma tell you everything"

And i can do the backing vox for chorus as well. What do you think? smile.gif

Oh that, you have to export the track (at File menu), Ableton will collate all the tracks into one. You have to tweak the settings though according to your requirement. Basically AVI format will give you the highest quality (high bitrate) but the file size is huuuugggeee. I usually save the track in WMV (ver. 11) format, cause this has good enough quality to upload in youtube or fb.

On part of this audio mastering, I also tweak the volume/peaks of the audio, including whether i want it on L or R channel alone (particularly those song parts that has 2 guitars, I will set each guitar playing on L or R). Hope this helps. smile.gif

I already got the sample track from Wintersun today, but not very sure If I'd be able to fully clean it up, will let you know guys this weekend. Worse thing that can happen, we resort to a drum track instead =(

Deadfrog, maybe you can help me on this too, I'll share with you the sample track he gave me on your soundcloud account

nabzblitz >> hmm I think just vocal will do rite killerkamote7? And if possible, can I send my vocals after nabzblitz? since I will sing the chorus only, I think its better for me to listen to his ver first, so maybe I have an idea to insert the harmonies on the suggested part we mentioned previously?

Do we need to wait for the complete assemble instrumental from our official musicians (proud of u guys XD) then we record our vocals, or we can just send our vocals now?

Yes you can send the vocals to me already, but send me the backing track that you used also so that we can baseline the songs' bpm.

I just returned from outstation and will continue to work on this for the weekend..

Update 20 November 2011

Testing the sample work given by DeadFrog and Kaoru and remixed the 3 tracks including mine.
This is just a preview/sample of what it looks like:

Attached Image

Secrets - Draft Version

My suggestions:

For Deadfrog,
1. maybe I'll take care of guitar part on 1:00 to 1:13, I'll use the coil tap on this one (you may provide the same licks as your 0:35-0:48) and Middle solo part, you may take care of the rest.
2. You take the Ending Solo also (I'll provide backing guitar and muted rhythm at left channel)

For Kaoru,
1. You can take the chorus part and duet vocals on the last 2 repeated chorus.

For Wintersun,
I'm working on your drum sample, will let you know today the outcome..

For Nabzblitz,
Please send me your vocal track sample.

For Rarap and Little Ice,
Kindly do the same.

I'm hoping for everyone's cooperation to provide their sample work latest by 27th November (just parts only, no need to complete the whole song, as I will try to check which part we can improve, and so that all can share their opinions and suggestions too.

Thanks all!

Noted guys, should be no problem. Just share it in my soundcloud account when it's available already.

Anyway, here's the sample drum + guitar track (WinterSun + Deadfrog). Let me know if this is OK or not, I need your suggestions/opinions:
Drum Track Sample for SECRETS

For WinterSun,
Can the kick drum be tuned a littler lower? I can't hear it clearly on every 4 measures, and it lacks 'bass'. Not sure if you can enhance it a bit during your recording. We will need a better drum sound than this, would you be able to do it?

The 8th note drum pattern that you made is OK, this should be the correct pattern to play it. I have cutoff both the lower and higher frequencies a bit because there's too much reverb and high-pitched echoes, including scratches.

It sounds great to me.. although more like a low quality production haha..

I think i can make the bass drum a little more bassy because during recording its kinda mute to prevent neighbours from complaining.

One thing im curious is that, me and deadfrog are not playing to the same tempo how did u manage to sync both?? hmm.gif

So do i still continue practice to the song or u will use a drum track?

It will sound great if we can record nicely. Maybe you can try give me another drum sample better than this and i'll see what else I can do. The drum track is the last option, honestly, I don't wanna use a drum backing track because it defeats the purpose of going a full band collaboration cover.

Oh that, I adjusted both of your tempo. Your's was around 100bpm while his is around 120bpm i think lol. Actually, all have different bpm (including Kauoru). hmm.gif Which makes me think it would be better if we use only one base track (yup, that's the drum part to be used as bpm baseline)

So yeah, give me another one to work on before we can conclude anything, and do share it with Deadfrog as well. thanks.

I cant play at 144.1 bpm lol.. the metronome i have is on a single digit either 144 or 145. Earlier i asked killerkamote bro and he said i can play at my own tempo so i didnt use a metronome actually.

Im not sure wat i can change anymore to make the sound better since i recorded with my digi cam and the room is fix.. so the sound is recorded as it is.. hmm.gif

If record again i think will be same quality

how r? if u think drum sample will be better then u can use a drum sample for this project first. Im cool with that. Maybe during that i can try to slowly find my way to let it sound better by sending u sample for the next project. I dont wanna slow down the whole project.

Eh? I thought the original is 148? Ableton shows it at 148.79bpm to be exact.
info: http://www.karaoke-version.com/custombacki...ic/secrets.html

Well, I don't mind changing the tempo as long as it's uniform. If we resort to a backing track, not sure if there's one available. The only one I found is here: Secrets - Backing Track

A little off-tempo should be OK, I can always adjust it during final editing. Anyway bro, I thank you for trying. Let me ask the others if they are cool with that for the time being.

Hey man, I'd say its a great recording! Nice last note harmonic on the ending btw. rclxms.gif

We could use your track as the baseline instead of the drums, I can actually fill in my part while waiting for the others. Do send me your final work whenever it's ready. Hopefully we can finish this cover by 3rd week December. Thanks.

Killer, can you give me your email so i can send it to you?
and can i just send the whole ableton folder? (with vocal tracks, backing track, .als file)? should be easier right?

OH ALSO, the track i have of the song is 135.02 bpm. is that gonna be a problem? :/

EDIT: NVM i'll just set it at 148 bpm.

It has more features than mediafire, just think of it as youtube minus the videos, and then everything else have the same features (i.e. sharing, your own channel, comments, followers, etc).

Anyway, I will work on the tracks that I received from our guys this weekend.

Progress Updates:

03-Dec:
Received final bass track, verse vocals and backing vocals. Trying to resynch them together using the original track as baseline (at 148.79bpm). Screenshots!

Oops, what to do with the spaces? If I don't add those, the whole song will be out of synch haha

ok, I give up on the resynching the verse vocals, and jumped to resynching the backing vocals at chorus and applied compression and LCF at those:

Just experimenting on this verse 2nd voice part (make it sub-mixed/stereo), looks OK but if i changed my mind I'll remove the effects:

Yeah i think it's better if you do. Just send it to my email nabz_blitz@hotmail.com.

I just have to re-record the verse right? Backing tracks are fine?

EDIT: New vocal track done. It's in Killer's email because Soundcloud won't let me upload due to copyright stuff. (i don't even know how they know). This time set at 148.79 bpm. if STILL out of sync then i think me and Kaoru should do the vocal tracks last, after all the other instruments are done. haha.

Received and checked the file "Secrets Cover Verse & Bridge Vocals (Re-Done)", good job! they are in synch. Now can you send me the whole individual tracks (1 for Verse, 1 for Bridge) without the the backing track.

lol ez.

eh... you can't really call it a cover for drums since it's a looping pattern. It's probably time and effort friendly to just repeat one drum pattern and copy-pasta-pasta-pasta-pasta. I thought your other drummer is already playing for that one?

Edit: Is there a specific genre of music you guys like? How is this all working out? Does everyone have experience, recording gear, etc?

Eh? I didn't said send me another one. LOL
I mean send me the individual audio tracks before you export them (1 for verse, 1 for bridge). Don't tell me that you recorded it all in one track including the backing track? If so, how would I be able to filter out your vocals from that? LOL

I think you can just record it over the original track? as long as the bpm is at 148.79 then i don't think there'll be a problem. (Just guessing)

thanks. cause i lost track of the progress since i was busy during the last 3 weeks. if you guys are doing exactly the same tempo, and same key, then i'm all set. i just transcribe the original cello track and record accordingly.

by the way, the cello track always reminds me this...

Its true that's its a looping pattern and its easy to just copy-pasta the selected track. piece of cake to do via ableton. But if its repetitive, then there's meager room for improvisations right? Well, this guy nailed it btw:

Anyway, there has been some problems recording using acoustic drums so yeah, we need someone else who can. I spoke with WinterSun and he's Ok with that.

Genre? We have not discussed on that yet. All of us plays different genres (Alternative, Rock, Jrock, Acoustic, Metal, etc) so we might not stick to just one. The aim currently is to finish this song cover and we will see what goes further down the road. Suggestions are welcome anytime. smile.gif

I think everyone have their own recording gears i.e. audio interface + DAW.

ok, using the audio track from the official music video found on youtube, the result of perfectly sync'ed tempo is 148.15bpm, and perfectly tuned to 440.

i downloaded one mp3 version and the tuning is off, higher than 440 tuning, and it's slower tempo which sync nicely with 148bpm. there seems to have some funny versions floating around.

so before i start to record, please check if we're working with the correct *official* version.

Sorry I must have missed reading your post sweat.gif

So far I only have the bass and backing vocal tracks. Here is the track that I completed to edit (I included the orig song as backing track so you can use this)

This track contains the following:
1.Backing track - Orig song
2.Bass track - by rarap
3.Verse/Chorus/Bridge backing vocals - by nablitz

i think i better follow the work in progress. i extracted the audio track from the official MV and the tempo 148.79 does not sync, it's 148.15 instead.

checked the WIP track, yes, 148.79 sync, but not 100% of the whole song. i don't know what happened to the WIP track, something wasn't right to begin with.

i'd like to check a few things:

1. killer, when you edit the recorded track, did you cut the original track to accommodate? because the WIP track sounds like it's edited, pretty unnatural especially the pre-chorus to chorus. DAW nowadays are very advanced, you may had activated the time stretch by accident when you edit it, which you shouldn't. just want to double check.

2. anyone who started to record the first track, did you provide the mp3 that you referenced? it's dangerous that everyone has a reference track that's slightly different from each other.

as mentioned in my previous post, i extracted the audio file from the official MV and it sync perfectly with 148.15bpm, from beginning until the very end. you have to adjust the track so that it sync right from the very first note until the last one. easiest way to sync the tempo is to make sure you find the very first drum hit, in this case, the first chorus. percussive tracks like drums are easy to sync because you can see the hits on the waveform view. then adjust the tempo until everything sync.

i can probably record over the current WIP track but i can guarantee you that it'll never sound in sync, or tight.

Actually I didn't touch anything on the original track. Not sure if I accidentally activated the time stretch (warping), will check later. What do you mean by unnatural, you mean the bpm changes on the pre and chorus? or you mean the bass and vocals? I've put on some effects on the backing vocals just for experimenting, if it's ugly, I will remove the effects. Anyway, the difference on the bpm should be no issue as DAWs can modify all tracks to follow 1 common pacing (bpm)

2. anyone who started to record the first track, did you provide the mp3 that you referenced? it's dangerous that everyone has a reference track that's slightly different from each other.

As long as the reference song is within 148bpm (the .xx doesn't matter) can be used.
Please take note we used this approach (to have the orig track as reference) because we didn't have the reference track (drum or bass).

Later on, we will utilize online collaboration websites, i.e. IndabaMusic and Kompoz so that our recording will be organized and have a common dashboard to work on. If everyone agrees, we can start using this.
For info, you may check on this:

no the bpm changes didn't happen on the pre-chorus, but it sounds like the very first bass hit/main vocal part has been shifted slightly late, then the first pickup vocal of the chorus sounds like it pick up earlier (due to the shifted pre-chorus). i'm not aware of any effect used though, but whichever you did, you can reverse it as long as you have backups.

by the way, i THINK you might have applied destructive effect processing, which introduce delay (latency) and resulting the whole pre-chorus delayed. usually this shouldn't happen since all DAW can compensate the latency, but there should be some setting that resulted the delay.

this is not the correct approach, regardless of being professional or amateur works. if you work on 148bpm and i work on 148.79bpm, the song will start to sound out of sync as soon as the first chorus. not very badly out of sync, but obvious enough to think "why the band not in sync?".

yes, live players can't play like midi which every note can be quantized perfectly. and it's natural to have the best player in the world still play a little loose. but recording in different tempo is going to be a much worse issue. you'll have a nightmare to sync the whole thing, and especially when you bring in the drum track, even if you can somehow sync everything, you'll most probably get a clumsy sounding drum track.

a common practice in the professional world, drums will usually be the first one to record first but as long as there's a midi mockup, any instrument/vocal can be recorded first but recording the drums first will have the advantage of playing in very tight sync with the drummer for other live instruments. even before the digital recording was popular, musicians still use metronome as a guidance to record. if there's no metronome track, rarely the band will record separately, they'll have to record together to ensure the whole playing is tight. not to say we should practice the professional way, but at least we try to avoid disasters.

can we like do a basic form of the song in midi? it's easier to adjust the tempo in midi form. we can use the cello parts to indicate which is the verse and chorus. we can use a steady drum pattern preferably in midi too as some sort of metronome. then everyone will reference the same midi with the same tempo.

actually i quite agree on the idea of using midi track.or if we want to use the original background, then warping function is the only way(which i use in making my bass track).btw i really need to warp everytime i use ableton since if i just put in the song by default,it will b in bizzare tempo(early part will b superfast and towards d end itll bcome super slow).dunno y this happens.by warping only the problem solved.dats y i just warp the ori track to 148bpm,and check the track so dat it sync with ableton metronome and start recording my bass track

actually, if you want to do a cover and record your bass track directly over the original track, you shouldn't just warp the track *before* finding the correct tempo and sync it. there'll be some inconsistency in the tempo and if you record your bass over the warped track, you'll find your bass track isn't consistent to the 148bpm metronome when you solo your bass track or mute the original track.

making a midi mockup means someone has to sequence the midi notes/tracks from ground up. there might be someone already done it, but you have to make sure that it's a usable midi track.

i'm going to upload the audio track from the MV, the beginning of the audio track is trimmed to match exactly the very beginning of the track. you guys try to import it into DAW and set the tempo to 148.15bpm, and you'll know why it's important to set the correct tempo first before recording anything. Will edit this post later when upload is done.

Oh yes, thanks for highlighting that. It's not that rarap played that totally out of synch but It was my mistake when I tried to shift the bass lines to synch with the original song, need tedious work on that (by moving/inserting space/lengthen the notes). Let me re-adjust the bass track.

WOW i missed a lot these few days. I think it's clear that the song's bpm is definitely not constant.
I noticed when i was recording the vocal track that the original song gets faster around the first chorus.

So i guess now we'll wait for the drum track before going further?

bpm issue is more pronounced than you can imagine.

100bpm vs 100.1bpm = 100km/h vs 100.1km/h

imagine 2 cars running constantly at 100km/h and another at 100.1km/h, you'll soon see 1 car running ahead of the slower one pretty soon, even just a difference of 0.1km/h.

if everyone is following the same tempo, everybody's track can be synced right away without the need to edit or warp *anything* at all. all you can expect is a little loose performance due to being a live player's track, but you won't hear some tracks getting faster and faster, or slower.

EDIT: ok since rarap confirm that his warped track sync correctly to the 148bpm, i suggest rarap to upload his warped track to killer and everyone else as the main reference track, and everyone else should record based on rarap's bass track and warped original track to avoid syncing problem.

yeah, I figured. But it's not the answer I'm looking for. hmm.gif

It's not that hard. Just record video and rip up audacity at the same time and it's all good.

Or is this one the problem?

(I understand that a lot of YT videos have some flaws in its BPM because of so many people reuploading/recycling etc.) Just decide on which specific video to follow so we can all follow the same tempo.

I think Little Ice meant to synch all our tracks together. There might be some latencies when we collate all instruments onto a single track (even if we record at the same exact tempo). When we have the final track we can proceed with synching it to the video track that you guys prepared (up to you whether you recorded the audio first then video later, or do it altogether). Both will be edited anyway for the final AMV.

if you want to check the original track, i've already done it, and uploaded a version in my previous post which you can simply import to DAW, set tempo to 148.15bpm (with warping totally disabled), and it'll sync perfectly to the metronome. i used the audio track extracted from official MV, at least i know it is the official version. unless you have the original CD track, downloading any versions off google won't guarantee the mp3 wasn't being tampered, at least for this song which appear to have some versions edited by God knows who. i downloaded a version found via google and it was a disaster. if you have original CD track, you can try check if it's synced to 148.15bpm.

or, the best way is simply use your current recorded track, and we'll all record based on 148bpm. there has to be only one version, and everybody will follow that one and only version. we can't have 2 leaders in a team or else it'll only make us all confuse.

here's a midi http://www.mediafire.com/?u37p2v7t3ma1035 it is set to 148bpm, no decimals
*

There seems to be alot of confusion on which track that will be used as baseline. Since Little Ice, Deadfrog and Me agreed on 148bpm, we will use the midi version as our reference track.

The midi can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?u37p2v7t3ma1035

or If you are having trouble using the midi file, I have converted the same file into a wav file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?lrxvxj70vv7l486

Please re-record your respective tracks ASAP (preferably over the long weekend). And send me the final track (only your track minus the midi, plus the video track if you have done it) latest by Wednesday, Dec. 14. Hoping for your utmost cooperation. Thanks guys.

in YT, sound isn't always everything. Sound is a great factor as well but visual appeal is the other huge fraction. I can't recall how many times i've seen comments lol @ videos with 240p.

I'm still encouraging you to invest in a better camera... if thinking about continuing to do future covers of course.

have you assign VSTs into those MIDI tracks i.e. EZDrummer for the drums? Cello / Strings vst?

have fun, mine crashed 9 times each time i tried to record. memory used to the max. what i did was, export the midi into wav, use the wav instead of the midi and start recording my part.

put all the midi into the arranger view. set up all vst for each track then export like you'd normally export your recording to wav.

Here's a quick hack, no need to import the midi file to wav nor assign a VST to individual midi track:

When you import midi file to Ableton, you must assign a MIDI output port. Using output to the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth SHOULD make sound.
Here are are screenshots on how you output the sound from the midi track that you imported:

Import the midi track by drag and drop (arrangement view)
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

At Options -> Preferences -> Midi synch tab:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Select output type in the midi track:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Do the same for the rest of the midi track
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

To start recording, you should create an AUDIO TRACK, arm the record button and play.
When you want to export the file (your track alone, without the midi), you can just discard the whole midi track (we wont need it anyway).
Hope this helps.

------------------------------------------

Edit: For some very stupid reasons, I can't freeze the track and export the thing (no sound whatsoever)
So I just convert the midi file into a wav file using a midi to wav converter.
This is the converted file:

Hush people, no need to argue here. icon_rolleyes.gif
I'll do my best to make the final video as nice as possible. I myself do not own a nice video recorder but I will borrow a decent point and shoot camera with video function from my friends.
No issue for me if Deadfrog can't provide a better video, I'll just crop the sides, put some effects maybe. Let's see when I have all the individual completed work in my hands.

Thanks.

LOL of course it will. There's also another solution, where you select all the midi track, play it and freeze the track and copy the freezed track to audio track (so this method is converting midi track to audio track)

Depends on the outcome of this project. We will cross the bridge when we get there. And guys, we need a frikin BAND NAMEE!! thumbup.gif

OK, I need everyone's instant messaging IDs (whether it's MSN live or YM) so we can discuss about this quickly.

So far I have received Bass Track (rarap) and Guitar tracks (me and Deadfrog). How about the others?

As for the Band Name, I need your suggestions too.

Here's my crappy suggestions:

1) 148 Afterthought - because of the confusion made over what will be the baseline bpm for the song. Actually I have some very funny names too to share with haha, here it goes: 148 Bpm Pickle Of The Universe Tuesday, 148 Bpm Against Stare, 148 Bpm Into Blender. LOL

2) Six Instincts (we are 6 people!)
3) Autumn of the Misguided
4) Improvise Trail Of The Junkyard Focus (LOL)
5) Hardly Fiction
6) Potato Major 7th ('Potato' quoted from CDGmaboroshi)

Audio: 96 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo, WMA
Video: 30 fps, 640x480 Progressive, WMV, 3.1 Mbps

Finally got the Violin, Guitar and Bass Tracks. I admit I got a little excited so I proceeded to resynch the 3 tracks with the baseline track and look at what we have now:

http://soundcloud.com/marksherman/secrets-raw_draft

Little Ice/Rarap, very solid playing thumbup.gif
Deadfrog, nice job at 2:00-11, 2:50-3:52 thumbup.gif

Note: Have not fully cleaned up all the noises and such, and synch is still a bit off by 3%, but hey at least the sound is good rclxms.gif

Deadfrog, nice job at 2:00-11, 2:50-3:52  thumbup.gif

Note: Have not fully cleaned up all the noises and such, and synch is still a bit off by 3%, but hey at least the sound is good  rclxms.gif

sounds good.

guys, wanna try Rolling In The Deep by Adele? we'll put in some violins. guitars gonna be tricky but i'll try a few ideas. here's the initial idea i have. the bass will start off until the pre-chorus, nothing else, just the bass and vocals at this point then the rest will come in and build up the intensity.

anyway, here are some YT covers i found:

actually, there's some weird sync going on, it sounds like my violin track is a little early. for my track, it's synced precisely to 148bpm, begin at bar 2, just put the audio track right at the beginning, and make sure you don't warp or cut anything, if any out of sync places are just my playing a bit off. laugh.gif

going to upload the video to you. it's going to be cropped, since i'm playing violin so very difficult for me to take a video without my face...you know how to put a mask on my face? i can upload the original video to you if you can do it. sweat.gif

Actually I put the violin track right at the very beginning (same as the base track) but somehow they do not synch at all =/ (note I disabled all warping from all the tracks, and input 148 as the general tempo). No worries, as I will remove the base track (the original) after I have all the tracks edited.

Just send me the original video, if you don't want to show your face its OK, I can crop something or put some blur effect LOL. Why would you wanna hide it anyway? hmm.gif
You should have put on a cap or something (like towel -- in case of CDG maboroshi haha).
Well, IMO you should be proud of yourself lah thumbup.gif

i sent you a version, you can hear the metronome picking up for 3 bars, so you can sync it. biggrin.gif

if you think it's too cropped, i'll upload the original version, but you need to trim the beginning and end. yeah, put something on my face lol! i don't want to reveal who i am here, hence i'm not going to show my face. sweat.gif

Hello ! Just wondering if I can join this thing as a backup ? I used to do these kinds of things on LowYat but I stopped as I've gone rogue for a while. I am back to playing bass now .

I have an audio interface for my recordings.

This is the stuff that I did last year with absolute no knowledge in editing or recording. Managed to pull it through somehow but I think you will do a better job in this !

*Forgot how to embed videos on Lyn*
Have to mind the quality of the rhythm guitarist and pianist as they recorded using just camera and microphone whereas the lead guitarist and I used audio interface, so that's why its a mess.

I do have my own videos , probably much more clean and better than the collaborations.

i asked killer to simply blur the face can liao lol

if the background midi track out or sync, that's strange cause i use the bounced midi track and record with it, the bounced track sync correctly to metronome/grid.

killer, if you want to sync tracks, always refer to metronome or check with the grid lines visually. from what i saw the screenshot of the tracks, my violin seems to start earlier than the grid line, so is the bass track.

im suggesting it only.u may look cuter with anime on ur face tongue.gif and actually 3 of us dont reveal our face(u,me and maboroshi).i also give a no face video tongue.gif

regarding the bass,he is doing it correctly.my track dont start on the grid.thats the correct position.even when i played with the midi its sync only as i start there.maybe he misplaced ur violin track then.

Added on December 18, 2011, 7:22 amow, regarding Thalmes,u can replace me if we plan for another collab between mid january to early march.i need to take a break during this time since im having a final exam.i got no prob if u want to join smile.gif

OK so I've put the tracks together, it should be synched better than before. Note, it still does not have the vocal parts from Kaoru and my guitar (been occupied with so many things).
Hope I can finish before New Year LOL.

Yup I'm using headphones during mixing, that's why I've noticed some hum on 0:15 on the first verse.

Well, it synch better than before. I'll do some fine tuning later on when all tracks are complete. I'm still experimenting with alot of things in Ableton haha.

How weird? Is it a bad or a good thing? After all, this is a cover, we're not supposed to follow exactly like the original haha

download reaper from http://www.reaper.fm , then try to import all the audio files to check if they're in sync.

it's simply too weird to be off sync if you simply import the audio files and do nothing.

also, remember to set the tempo first before you import anything, you may not realize some DAW will stretch or shrink the audio file when you adjust the tempo. great feature for "beat making" geared DAW like Ableton but a disaster for mixing.

by the way, i can probably record my violin for some bass notes by pitch shifting them down so the intro won't sound so "floating" due to lack of bass notes. or you can do something with the guitar? laugh.gif

Will check on Reaper later.

Actually here's what I did. I make sure when I select the audio track, the 'warp' function is always turned off. In Ableton, if you turn off this feature, it will always follow the general tempo that you keyed-in at upper right corner near the menu. After I've done that, I mark where the first beat should be and i zo0m to that area and drag the entire audio track to where it should be. For example, the violin track and bass track I know exactly where the first bass note should hit, so I drag the bass track to coincide or synch with the violin track.

If there were out of synch portions later in the track do you think it's probably because of human error during playing/recording? If so, then I may need to cut portions of the track to compensate on the general tempo.

No need to re-record the violin track. It's supposed to sound like that anyway, unless you have a cello to record with.

there seems to be no problem with what you did. i believe you're well aware of the warp setting or beat detecting or something like that and keep it off so i try to look into the problems on other area. like you said, it could be human playing error. i'm trying to download the tracks just to double confirm though it'll take a while since those are big files.

by the way, another common practice is to align the beginning of the audio track so that it starts precisely from zero. in other words, when bouncing the track, leave exactly one bar at the beginning so no need to drag the audio track and re-sync by aligning to the graph/grid, much like what you did with the midi mockup track - i just import it, set grid "snap" on, and snap it right on the 2nd bar, then i start record. the midi mockup followed tightly with the metronome.

by the way, another common practice is to align the beginning of the audio track so that it starts precisely from zero. in other words, when bouncing the track, leave exactly one bar at the beginning so no need to drag the audio track and re-sync by aligning to the graph/grid, much like what you did with the midi mockup track - i just import it, set grid "snap" on, and snap it right on the 2nd bar, then i start record. the midi mockup followed tightly with the metronome.
*
Actually you can immediately notice that all tracks were not in their proper tempo setting when imported to Ableton. You can see the native tempo right below the Warp button were different for all tracks. I'm not sure why, but probably its a wild guess from Ableton. Read something about Reaper that you can put beat markers and convert it to tempo markers hmm.gif

actually you don't need to stick with reaper but it's the easiest way to grab a DAW and install for a quick trial. there isn't any of the warping thing by default, which is what i used to record the violin track for this project. audio imported just fine and sticked to the tempo. i just tried opening the reaper project again and adjusted the tempo to 149 and the audio track left untouched and obviously the metronome is now off sync.

sad touhou for the dead

Added on December 28, 2011, 10:51 amare you sure we had a pianist? I don't see pianist on the first page of this thread.

Added on December 30, 2011, 10:41 amThis thread has very low activity...

If we're going to be this laggy, I'm afraid this will be the first and last cover I may provide. Good luck with the other drummer and other participants in the future.

I might as well take my leave if there's no flight.

Understand that it's the holidays bro. Am sure once the holidays are over we can go back to the usual pace.
I'm currently looking for other female vocalists as there's no response from Kaoru. sad.gif

For the next cover, I shall look for committed members that can deliver on time as promised. When we give a word that we will provide the track by this date, I think we should be responsible enough not to break promises.

I hope you would stick around. We'll have the gears running again after the holidays, actually I'm thinking what's the next cover would be. Deadfrog suggested 'Rolling in The Deep'. To be able to pull that off, we need a nice female vocalist. Any other suggestions anyone?

P.S. I found a Keyboardist/Pianist, problem is she doesn't have any recording equipment. I'm still looking for others..

I don't know... Holidays usually last only one day.

Already tired of checking this thread back and forth with little to no updates.. Pardon my impatience but I'm going to just stop looking back at this thread, OK?
I understand that this is a new band with quite a fresh concept here on the forum but we're starting off with no "spark." We lack the number of interested people with proper recording gear, have few devotees who are committed and even have some that don't show enough concern to improve the quality of their works. Though I'll NEVER understand the reason why some people will continue to "play for fun" in front of a camera without intention or concern of reaching the bigger audience pool on the net, I won't criticize any further even if it's for the sake of improvement.

I'm done here.

I hope our first collab is a success. Please let me know when the collab finishes by email or MSN chat at cdgmaboroshi@hotmail.com so I can take a look... and if you're in too desperate need of a drummer, I could maybe consider participating as a guest drummer. Good luck all. unsure.gif

Done! Updated in the first post. Looks like it won't be completed before I go. I will be out of the country for 2 weeks, hopefully by that time we already found a female vocalist. Planning to start the next collab in early February. Not sure if I will create another thread but most likely it will be privately communicated between members only.

I have learned alot doing this with you guys and I hope you will all stick around for more biggrin.gif

Hi mate smile.gif Interested in participating in your next project (if any), so just hit me up if you need a guitarist!

I run an ESP Mirage w/Bare Knuckle pickups through a Line 6 POD HD500 into Audacity (tongue.gif still no money for proper interface, saving up for ProTools)
I'm a very effects based guitarist (meaning that I like to add my own spin on to things with different effects to make it sound just that little bit crazier).

Anyway, I'd love to get involved in a project like this with forumers, so just let me know if you'd like me on guitars! If you still need some spice for this song, also let me know! smile.gif

Happy Chinese New Years guys. My gift to you? Complete recording of the vocals for chorus! WE'RE DONE!

Audio Tracks:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

EDIT: VIDEOS DONE!
Videos:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Chorus 1 is the all the choruses, Chorus 2 is for the very last chorus, where it repeats once but overlaps, so i recorded another 1 which can put on top of each other.

Killer, these tracks start from 0.00 so all you have to do is just insert them and the timing should be fine.

Video for chorus 1 is slightly low quality, but still in HD 720p.

Also, the chorus was A BIT of a stretch for my voice, so SORRY if it doesn't sound good. If you guys think it's not good enough, feel free to wait for another vocalist to pop up. smile.gif

Will check it out later bro, thanks!

I agree Key of D is a bit of a stretched. I sang this song live (acoustic) at Key of C instead and I still suck:

Anyway, I've finished editing all the videos and included my additional guitar track too.
I think I can finish the final work this weekend rclxms.gif

dont have any idea for another cover.maybe pump up kicks?remake to rock/metal tongue.gif anyway, for next cover i prefer to have a drum track 1st prior to recording.i think it was not nicely arranged in secrets cover towards the end bcoz i didnt expect the double bass drum to come there.it sounds like less harmony in the bass n drums.i can come up with better cover if i can get a drum track first imo

Hi there!

Yes, you can join as backup to Kaoru, as the seat is given to her as our main female vocalist.
We don't know yet what song to cover after this. Will keep you posted. Thanks!

Guys,

I was bored tonite so I did some additional guitar riffs on 00:30-00:39 (clean), 1:18-1:33; 1:58-2:12;2:49-3:55, I think it's too much doh.gif
Anyway, I'll redo my parts that i dont like after I have the female vocals. Here's the spoilt version:

Yup, original by New Order, but its acoustic and kinda boring. The female vocal was fantastic though.

SOME UPDATES:

ALMOST Final AUDIO track completed. Based on the feedback from our guys, I have re-edited some parts, though its far from perfect:

http://soundcloud.com/marksherman/secrets-...ration-cover-by

This should be it [including the vocals]:
http://soundcloud.com/marksherman/secrets-by-one-republic

and this is the Instruments only [backing track]
http://soundcloud.com/marksherman/secrets-...umental-backing

I will let Nabz and Kaoru decide whether they want to redo the vocals or not.

think we have vocal syncing problem.nabz and kaoru voices doesnt seem to sync with each other.especially on parts where they try to make harmony...

1:21=kaoru make mistake.to obvious tongue.gif

1:31-1:58,2:23-2:50=kaoru vocal entering a bit early compared to whole instrument

2:11-2:22=this part nicely done

2:49=better to keep only 1vocal here,or alternate singing between nabz and kaoru.they dont sync+dont sing together.they sing in different styles totally, hence cant be harmonize.

instrumental parts are ok.the one that u posted before this sound nicer

Yup, the last part is totally way off synch. I wanted to make only one vocal towards the end but both vocals have some lyrics/pitches wrong, maybe both of them should redo that part. One to sing the chorus and one to provide backup vocal.

Or maybe I should delete all the vocal parts and send to them both the instrumental portion only and then re-record theirs. Well, if they got time, else I can't do anything much.

vocal parts are difficult.people will hear them 1st.small mistakes can screw the whole song...

Added on February 5, 2012, 5:39 pmmy suggestion is to not make double vocal.try make them alternate between each other on the 2paragraphs of the last chorus.should save much more trouble than to record back.and hope u can resync kaoru vocals on the 2nd and 3rd chorus.the mistake part can be discarded IMO

OK, I have removed the double vocals, and alternate only. I made nabz sing the last part only, except the last '..all my secrets away'.
Resynch kaoru's 2nd and 4rd chorus too and discarded the female rap parts.

Here it is, at least abit better haha

I know both of them aren't Robbie Williams or Avril Lavigne, but yes we can still improve. I've posted the Instruments only track without all the vocals. I will let the two of them decide if they want to redo the vocals or not. Else, its pretty much the final one.

my suggestion to vocals, sing your own way, don't try to sound like One Republic. the music we played is a lot more aggressive than the original, try to follow the mood.

you don't sound so bad, it's just that i think you're a bit shy. there are places where you should just let it out, scream whatever. listen to Robbie Williams or Keith Urban for example, they're both great in expressing the song.

Passing by here every now and then.
Had just listened to this version http://soundcloud.com/marksherman/secrets-by-one-republic

If you're looking for perfection, I think the first thing is to get Kaoru to rerecord using tools like nabz did. Either Kaoru's voice does not suit the song, or her recording tools made her sound like she has a blocked nose.

Then those vocal syncing problems, imho should be tweaked during mixing. In this version, Kaoru's vocal track came in a tad bit too fast. It always starts slightly faster than it supposed to.

Instrumental sounds pretty awesome if you ask me. biggrin.gif

Sure you can join, you're welcome.
Have not decided yet on the next cover song, I'm still looking for something that will fit Kaoru's and Nabz voice, and to include violin track as well.
Planning to start as soon as this first cover is done, hopefully by end of month.

Meantime, here's something to put smile on your face icon_idea.gif

O.O my timing was so obviously off most of the chorus....sorry....
and the part that sound like singing in toilet....maybe my voice dun really fit or...my crappy mic XD

I use SonicGear DM200 mic and Cool Edit Pro to record. I do realise that some of the 'feeling' was lost when I record my covers... coz ppl who heard my singing always said my real voice and recording are so different...i guess i need better equipment.

will re record...this weekend I'm SO FREE~!! XD gonna do all my pending projects.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to inform you that I failed to re record my part, as well as the video. I'm been spending my 4 days off looking for a new job...

I'm sure the you guys can't wait for any more delays, there fore I suggest to keep the one I recorded previously as the finalised one from me. You can also remove me from the team as I have been the main source of delay for this project. I heard that that there are ppl who volunteered as a singer, you can consider them to replace me.

I'm sorry to disappoint you. As much as I want to do this, I am not able to focus on my singing hobby until my job problem is solved.

Again, I deeply apologise for the inconvenience caused.

I totally understand your situation, therefore there is no need to apologize. I have removed the female vocals for this song just to get it done. We all have to move on anyway.
In any case, I wish you luck in job hunting.

Sure you can use it to record yourself, just don't forget to ask permission later if you wanna publish it.
Thanks.

BTW, guys I've decided for the next song to cover. I want this song to be a rock version, with male vocals (that said, must be a powerful male vocal). This have only 4 chords throughout the whole song, we can transposed it from G to E to suit the male vocals (or D, whatever). I'm thinking this time, violin will do the solo. So anyone up for the challenge?

Guys, start throwing your ideas on this. First of all, I notice pop songs are mostly in Cmajor, just like in the songs used in tv/soap operas. For rock, we have in D or E. So it depends on the vocal range, we can use key of C, D or E. Maybe genyou90 can try this song and see?

Also, we need to do the drum part first so that the bass parts can fit in perfectly. BTw, I saw there are some rock covers already done for this song.

You guys definitely need a good audio engineer. As far as I can see, there is absolutely no problem with the audio tracks, it's just that you probably need to EQ the mix a little, probably make the tracks a little more uniform by using capable sound equipment at least, and try to bring out the tracks which sound muddy and under powered here.

But anyways, I'm part of a cover band too, and I was thinking of starting my own little cover project since we're waiting for music college to start and stuff. You interested? We already have quite a few capable people in our circle of band mates already and we're not averse to bringing our equipment to any willing collaborators house to record them personally.

This drum track is good, how did you record it? Were you using multiple mic or just one?
Yes, better to record it as separate track and f you can do some tweaking on the EQ too, please do so so we can refine the muddy areas. Once done, send us the drum track only. Please specify what BPM were you using too (was it around 80bpm?

Everyone please experiment on your parts using the original key first (at E major), later the vocalist can choose what key he's comfortable to sing with.

And oh, I will finish our first cover this weekend.
Thanks.

I record this using an electronic XM-drum with the sound output to audition program and added some EQ effects.

There is hiss even before I start to record. will try to tweak some of the EQ to remove that.

I'm not sure of the BPM. have u find out?
will send you guys the drum track once i've record it using ableton.

Question, do individual drum have their own output or is it just one? I reckon it's just one mono output.
To remove the hiss, I think there's a noise gate somewhere in your DAW. (i.e. Acoustica Mixcraft 5 got, can set noise suppression from 0 to 100% automatically).

If you import the song to Ableton, it automatically shows the native BPM, we can use that.

Each individual drum component connects to the sound module and output sound as one single channel. (if that's what you mean by mono)

This outputs connects to the line-in stereo of my PC.
I will try out Ableton tonight and let you know the outcome of it.

Hey rathead, good drum cover! I think your problem mostly lies with distortion. Make sure to adjust your drum levels so that it doesn't clip and distort! (The volume is too high for the computer to handle, causing distortion)

Good luck on the next cover guys! Sounds pretty good so far. I'll try to find some time to contribute in the near future.

Thanks bro, you are right it sounded noisy and hissy.
I've purposely bump up the EQ effects after recording it, if not the drums would sound "flat" as in it wouldn't blend into the song.

Will re-record it once I found out how to remove the hiss while recording it in a separate track.

Guys, the BPM is 83.

BPM: 83

The song will start with a bang, not like the original song which starts which 2 bar measures of acoustic guitar. I suggest we do extra 4 bars of instrumental (all instruments) on top of the original song.

1. Intro(all) -4 bars
2. Verse 1 - acoustic
3. And I remember...[drum beats enter here]
4. Chorus...[all]
5. Verse 2..[all]
6. For the second 'All those crazy things'..[note to drummer, make the bass drum in quarter notes, the snare rolls in 16th notes in ascending volume]
7. Chorus
8. Bridge 1 - This is a violin solo
9. Bridge 2 - This is guitar riff
10. Chorus x 2.
11. End

Isit me or there are 8th notes crashes when chorus? Or was it open hi-hats...sounds so similar laugh.gif (On your cover)

I do agree most of it,

For item:
1: doable, example intro something like paramore's - For A Pessmist I'm Pretty Optimistic.
2 - 5: agreed.
6: doable, i'll see what i can do to blend in.
7. is it all?
8 - 9: agreed. drum beat remain.
10: Chorus 1: All
10: Chorus 2: Maybe some guitar riff according to the drums beat
11: ok

1. Yes, something like that. Just improvise accordingly, you may do different drum beat style (against drum beats in the verses) on this part. However, since we started with this style, the last chorus (#11) should have the same pattern as this.

For the last 2 chorus, this is the most important part, the climax. Am sure Deadfrog will enjoy soloing on this part, and I will only back him up (read as: Im not as good as him tongue.gif ).

I will try to contact Little Ice for his solo.

As for the key of the song, I'll leave it to you genyou90 since you will sing this part right? Just try to practice in the key that you're comfortable with and then let us know.

hey guys,

here is the original + 1st draft-drum track
http://www.mediafire.com/?xr043ede4mh1nu0
open the Ableton live set file.

not really perfect, few mistakes because was in a hurry to record.
still haven't record the 4 measures intro. left a blank there.
Please experiment it with your own ideas to fill in some grooves.

and here is the MP3 drum-only track with added EQ from Adobe Audition.

Hey nabz, I wasn't able to contact you lately. Yes you are still part of the group. If its alright with you, let's give the vocal part to genyou90 for this cover as he was keen on joining. We can do a separate cover (I'm thinking Foster the People) but that would be later. Thanks.

Btw, this is a rock cover, I'm quite OK with these drum riffs but I think we need a more aggressive drum playing like this:

And oh, Little Ice can't make it this round so yeah we have to revise the arrangement. Open for discussion.

P.S. I was out of town last weekend, just got back from holidays.

Cool Stuff! So what do you suggest we do? Key changing is cool, especially at the last 2 chorus. We can do double time on the choruses too. We can change the riffs styles (both drums and guitars) on some parts of the song too.

Yup, I know that it is quite a "soft" drum beat and the verse is pretty much almost the same as the original ones.
I'll work out something to add more 16th notes and some ideas from that cover.

Sure go ahead, there are other SIMILAR threads like this. Perhaps those that we are unable to accommodate should join with another collab with Deadfrog, but he needs a few ones only:

Not sure if this sounds rock enough. need to listen to your guitar riffs to improvise and make some adjustment.

Yeah i know, there is some sync problem.

what you can do is insert avril's original track first. then Ableton will auto-set tempo to 83 BPM. Make sure you leave some 4 bar for the intro.
1. Then go to Create > Insert Audio Track
2. Insert the Drum track in 2-Audio clip view. (You can drag-and-drop the file from your folder into Ableton)
3. Note: the drum track is not sync to the original track tempo yet and Ableton auto-set the BPM of the drum track to 110.44
4. In the "Sample" box for the drum track, change the Start point to 0 (only the first one)<enter>. Note: it will auto change to -1.
5. Then click "wrap" twice, the track will be auto set to 83 BPM, and start counter at 1.

user posted image

This will make the track play on count number 1 and sync with the original song. below is screenshot of the sync track.
user posted image

IF you don't do the step above the drum track will be out of sync.
I'm not sure why so much hassle once the individual track is exported out.

And also if you are recording your track, please reduce the avril's original track volume, because u might get confused with the original drum beat and mine.
the original ones uses lots of off beats and ghost notes and its hard to focus. rclxub.gif

Let me know if you guys want to change some part so it fits into your bass/guitar riffs.

both of my E strings on my guitar gave way... i'll replace them this weekend and put in some riffs. got some ideas.

i think the 4 bars intro will have to sound something acoustic to blend in with the 1st verse if that's what killer wants. something spacey type of melody, y'know something like the start of Don't Wanna Close My Eyes by Aerosmith.

I've replaced the strings of my acoustic guitar to Martin's custom light, the frikin high E string broke when I was tuning it ;(

Have to run to Woh Fatt this weekend haiyoo. Tomorrow I'll replace my electric guitar strings to Slinkies.

Anyway, the 4 bars intro should be loud. The acoustic guitar together with the vocals will come on the 3rd beat of the 4th bar (it's an upbeat). Will try to improvise more on the intro this weekend.

Rathead, thanks for the explanation on the synching. I've heard the drum cover, I'm glad it was better than before.

Any comment from the vocalist? where is he btw? lol

Sorry to say this but, I think vocalist should have an advantage to practise anywhere and anytime. (eg, driving / in shower etc)
compared to us where we need our instruments in hand to experiment with stuffs.
we are still in an early stage, so you still have time.. wink.gif

EDIT:ok after all the trouble i went to sync the track,i was right that my avril original track is the main cause.my original mp3 downloaded was not the same as rathead's.if u all try to see in the internet, there are mp3s of duration 3:44,3:45,3:46,3:47.the one rathead is using is the 3:47,while mine is 3:45.hence the track not syncing.now that ive found this out,the problem has been solved sweat.gif

ohh. i didnt know that there are multiple duration of avril's original track that can cause syncing issues.
mine, i took it from youtube and converted it into mp3.

but if you guys want, you can download the mp3 I used to record with the drum track. duration 3:47.
just to make sure that everyone is using the same track without syncing issues.

Sure no problem. I think we can handle it for the meantime.

Updates:

Finally changed strings of my 2 guitars. Downloaded the drum track and was able to synch to the original one. If we are using Key of D, then I will retune my acoustic to Open D5 (D A D A D D).

Still figuring out the solo parts and the intro that will suit with the drums ;/

Project on-hold due to some other priorities.
