on a side note for people who didn't read the LN, that as to why Kirito can one-hit KO a veteran, Just as Egil said, ALO remove one of the most important thing in MMORPG(or rather, everything in the name of RPG), that is the level system. All battles depends on the personal athletic skill in real life(pretty ironic for people who went there to escape reality), meaning even a newbie like Kirito(lol) have a chance to win against a veteran(so no more imba like situation like unscratched when getting surrounded by PK-ers during Scilica-chan's chapter)

as for the one-hit KO, the damage system is based on a few things:
1) skill mastery
2) slash speed
3) weapon's rank
4)enemy's armor's rank

in the game, even if u raise your defensive skill, your HP wont raise all that much like in level system game, so a fair fight is ensues
as for Kirito, his weapon's rank is the lowest beginner class, while the enemy's armor rank is one of the highest(Salamander can use heavy armor, not to mention they're from the battle type)

so Kirito's damage is solely depends on his skill mastery and slash speed, and that speed plays the most important role resulting in really high damage output
still imba like hell if u ask me, having a battle freak who got trapped in a death game for 2 year enter a game where people's penalty for dying is reduced skill mastery

after SAO event, Argus company went bankrupt and Recto buy it, giving them all the possession of SAO related thing, then they make a copy of it and start manufacturing a new type of NerveGear, which is the AmuSphere, which is released along with ALO(if im not mistaken, around 6-12 month after SAO incident)

so kirito get to have all his stats...which is alredi pretty imba to start with...mehhh...

But for their fight scene not really exciting . Things should move fast , but they strike like slowpoke . Slow ~

Look at the Salamander charging on ? Straight like easy to dodge . Feel like wth ? so easy to dodge ?

Is it just me or people dont use shield becoz they need to fly and hold the joy stick on the left hand which was suppose to be fitted with shield ?

note that there's no Sword Skill in ALO, not to mention most of them are just nerd high schooler who spend most of their time in front of PC, so even in battles, its usually just hack and slash and some random moves with the hope that it hit. Its even said in the LN that u can rarely see a very beautiful style of duel fight. but most of this is covered with the addition of magic abilities

as for the left hand, actually the controller is only for beginner who cant really get used to the wings.
As ALO is a VR environment, u can make them feel anything, even to the feeling of having a wing bone on your back. so if they can control it properly, they don't need the controller anymore(notice how Lyfa use both of her hand in the air holding her long sword)

so for why they don't equip shield, one reason might really be because of the joystick as even if they're veteran, the flight system is still hard to get used to(the leader of those lancers have shield though, meaning he can fly pretty well).
another reason might be because shield will slow them down if they focused on speed
