For large capacity hard disk, it might easily spoilt if get too hot. I remember that I read a report regarding hard disk on cnets news, it have say that for a large capacity hard disk, because they make the point very small, so it could have something happen to those point. I am not familier with those technical word and forget where the report now.

Anyway, I and my brother currently have 3 spoilt seagate 30GB hardisk now, but all are use for around 5 - 6 years liao. Now have another 200GB Seagate hard disk, awaiting another WD 120GB hard disk to come tomorrow which I buy from a seller in this forum. biggrin.gif

i got a 20G Quantum hdd..using it untill now...
it has been using for 5 years+
no bad sectors and error...
quite stable...

unlike the WD hdd i bought last year, not more than a year has SMART error.  shakehead.gif

that's why i said it was good!  thumbup.gif  blush.gif

I think it is depend on your luck. My sister Quamtum 30GB hard disk just nearly die this year after arounf 5 years using it. It become very slow and when I check it at my PC, it have SMART error. Hard to access the file. I spend more than 10 hours to recover the data inside it via a software, nearly draging my PC to die. sweat.gif

40'C is normal for your Hitachi, mine hovers around that range without any cooling.

So far, used Maxtor and IBM no problems for 6 years. But got problem with Western Digital, probably due to external use (others are internal).

What's your temp for Seagate HDD?
Throughout my experience, Seagate HDDs temp is higher than of WDs

Currently my 80GB WD is 38c and my 320GB Seagate is already at 44c sweat.gif

I'm using the older version, very handy if you want to format your computer often. Just create an image of your existing HDD and restore it at a later time biggrin.gif

I think so. My WD 2500JD died recently (SMART error) and my Maxtor 200GB is starting to make strange noise. Both have been running hot at 45-50C for 2 yrs.
