wah... all these posts about maxtor dying make me worried cos i just bought a brand new maxtor sataII 160gb. it says it's manufactured in august in china. am weary about these china mari goods. but my hdd is cool, only around 32-35C. also have an older seagate 40GB 5400rpm which is 38C. i bought a brand new hitachi deskstar 80GB which can hit 40C!

i really hope my drive will last at least its full warranty period.

my bro's three disks all died recently, really weird, all about the same time... seagate 2.5" and samsung and then the maxtor also showing signs of going out.

IMO, all hdds give out, just donno sooner or later... maybe depend on luck also huh? like buying car... just keep fingers crossed we get a good one.

my 80GB Sata2 hitachi's temp is around 32~35 in air-con room, 39 in non-aircon room. maybe u need a small fan to blow the heat away. as for the 3 disks knocked out in the same time i think its not something to do with luck but something to do with the motherboard eh. BTW, Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB is the strongest now flex.gif  (compared with the same level HDD by D.I.Y zone)
*
My old seagate goes up to about 38c in the daytime, no aircond. the maxtor is in the same computer and hits 35 on a hot day and rarely goes above. right now, both drives are below 30c cos it's quite cool.

i mounted a small fan below the maxtor after reading all the stuff about them overheating but when I touch it, it feels quite cool. The new hitachi deskstar on my sister's pc is really hot, when u touch it it just feels a bit too hot for a hdd, the temp reading is about 40c or so. i had a quantum 7200rpm before that died quickly because it felt real hot too. so i was surprised to find very good comments by users on hitachi deskstars.

anyway,
another horror story on maxtors, my brother's 1 year old maxtor 7200rpm just died. he said it was the circuit board that konked out as he slipped in a different circuit board and it worked. said it was very hot all the time even with hdd fan. i donno if i am lucky or the latest maxtors run much cooler but my 160GB Sata really runs very cool. it's only 29c right now and no aircond on. i am keeping my fingers crossed, hope it lasts a few years.

his other two hdds that died, one in his Mac is a toshiba and the other is a 2.5" portable samsung. both mechanical faults.

very mafan and "sway" ah! to have all three go out about the same time!

but one thing good i have to say about maxtor is their maxblast4 software so damn easy to use. i just download it and then copy from my old boot drive (seagate) to the new 160 maxtor and do everything with just a few clicks (partition to 80GB each and then format and copy about 20GB of data) and then I just reboot and finish, my new maxtor has same stuff as old seagate and is now my boot drive. very easy to use.

sotong, it's used to setup new disk, it allows u to clone/copy partitions and also reformat and repartition. i did everything in about 30 minutes (including copying and partitioning etc). but u have to uninstall the horrendously troublesome Norton Systemsworks if u have it before u clone or u cannot uninstall it anymore later. Also if u have activation required products like Photoshop CS2, u need to reinstall/reactivate those as well.

I think so. My WD 2500JD died recently (SMART error) and my Maxtor 200GB is starting to make strange noise. Both have been running hot at 45-50C for 2 yrs.

wah that's hot! maybe the newer ones run cool now cos my new maxtor doesn't go anything over 36C and usually stays around 33C. however, I am getting a hdd fan just in case.

OMG! 50+ C is really HOT! be careful or you might lose your data at any moment due to hdd failure.

@6GDominator

my maxtor paling hot also 38C only when a lot of activity. when none it just sits there at 31C. the circuit board can fail if too hot, that not so bad cos can recover data if replace circuit board but if mechanical fault, then finish liaw.

sp i suggest u get hdd fans quickly but even then there is no guarantee (my brother's disk also failed even with fan, circuit board burnt or something, but can recover data thankfully!) but at least cool it down a bit. just always monitor your hard disk temps using HD Tune or HDD Thermometer (both free downloads, google them).

About the fans, I bought two for only RM12 and came with screws and other necessary stuff. i haven't installed them though.

then also can add a cheap but quiet pc fan in the casing. cost only RM2++ at two ringgit shop haha.

but the problem is that my front of the casing don have air coming in. just put the fan there and it is ok?
*
no ventilation holes what so ever? maybe that's why no air flow in your casing. maybe you can try and leave a bit of the casing cover open so air can flow in. if i leave mine open, the temps drop by a few degrees but then i also have to vacuum the inside more often as dust settles quickly.

what software you using the detect the degrees of your HDD? i am using speedfan. any other software can detect temp for your HDD?
*
HD Tune or HDD Thermometer. Also use speedfan but the other two also free. my hdd temp right now is 38C. it's the highest it goes and today is quite hot. at night it goes right down to 31C.

i've installed my two hdd cooler fans. now my seagate temp has dropped from 38C to 32C. My maxtor (master) dropped only 2C but still below 40C, around 35-37C. Today's very hot so it's around 37C right now. the two fans are generic cheapo china mari coolers but perfectly silent. i don't notice any noise increase at all.
