Sorry for asking may be the obvious to you people.

It's now time for me to chuck away my decade old DVD player and get myself a Bluray player instead. I mainly use it to watch 'ahem' DVDs from Pasar Malam on my 50" HDTV. So I suppose the Bluray player I am looking for would be:
1. Relatively cheap.
2. Good upscaling to 1080(?)
3. Tolerance to all sort of 'ahem' DVDs and Bluray(?)

Can someone please show me the way by giving me some advise? I hope to pick one up in the forthcoming KLAV shows next month. Thanks

If you have the $$ to buy an entry level why not??
First few days when i had my BDP S380, i played ahem DVDs, BDs, CDs, genuine US & UK BDs, all worked out fine. Tolerance lvl for me was worth every cent i spent.
Upscaling for DVDs was a significent imporvement to the PQ even for those ahem DVD 9 dual layer copies.
Would advice u bring your fav DVD or BD and do some test run on a demo set on KLIAV or audio shops u prefered to go.
Do look up for Cinavia free units to prevent any dissapoiment from ahem discs playback errors. jMHO!

Thanks a lot. So is this S380 a Sony? And what's the street price nowadays?

And what is this Cinavia you are talking about?

Ya is from Sony. Is 2011 model. Street price from 299-399 depends on location, limited stocks left.
Cinavia issue please read 2-3 pages back from this thread to get your answer. Thx

It is really sinful to watch DVDs on a 50" HDTV. cry.gif Advice? Check the threads here on Blu-ray Players or you can refer to my Blog below on BD player for an overview. It has not been updated but apart from the Cinavia thingy, it is still largely applicable.

Try looking at Sen Heng whether they still carry the older s380 batches...with M06.R.0415 firmware...or older Samsung D5300 with 1022 firmware...

I am sure there some shops still carry some old batch stocks.

How do you know what firmware just by looking at the box/player without it hooked up to TV?

My apologies about the sinful part! Like teaching grandmother (or is it grandfather?) to suck eggs! blush.gif
About the firmware. Some brands of BD player have their production/manufacture date on the box. I believe any player produced before February 2012 should be free from the Cinavia curse. Just my guess.

U could ask the sales person to show u the firmware on their available stocks or google on how to read the manufacture date on diff brands of the BDP.

S380. I need to know how to check firmware. Is there any code or something on the box sticker telling us which firmware? The staff genuinely don't know anything.

Dont worry on the sales person, just tell them to hook up the S380 and from the menu go to System Settings --> system info.
Make sure the firmware is M06.R.0415 or older so is confirmed a Cinavia free unit, if the firmware is beyond what i just stated then is a Cinavia effected unit which will have error playing ahem discs.
That was what i did when i got mine and the sales person also don't know much except hooking up the BDP to the TV, LOL!!

up until today there is still no way to hack this stupid CINAVIA thing? I am sure there will be some experts out there to bypass/crack this.....just like the Apple IOS jailbreak....

yes? no ?

Cinavia has very low entropy, they may have incorperated some very strong error correction. So far its still unbroken.

The ONLY option available is to make the sets to not detect cinavia, like hacked PS3 sets. So far CINAVIA is UNREMOVABLE.

Another plus for S380 is its also capable of 1080i analog component output. All other brands don't offer component out other than 480p composite.

Can I know what is your player serial number? I looking for non-Cinavia S380; at least a guideline for me. Since worry buy a Cinavia effected S380 to replace my current PS3.
