I'm planning to buy either asus 1215b or hp dm1-4000au this month, but I have some concern regarding the windows 7 starter edition.

Do I need to upgrade it to home premium, or is it ok already? I know the limitation, like no aero and cant change wallpaper (changeable using other software tho), so I'm not sure whether it's worth upgrading it. Besides, upgrading it to home premium might make it a bit sluggish? hmm.gif

I'm not really sure about that. How many ram does windows 7 starter need to run on idle anyway? I just need the netbook for web browsing, making powerpoint slides, mp3, flash games, document editing, pdf and stuff. Is 2gb enough? No photo or video editing, and I think the most ram extensive program i'll use is chrome or firefox...

I took the plunge yesterday. Went to LYP and bought it. They have black and silver color only. Bought the black one, but I wanted red mad.gif
Didn't play much with it yesterday coz I charged the battery overnight. I'll play with it if I have time today. Anyone have any ideas what kind of stress tests should i do with the laptop? In the meantime, I'm just gonna open up a lot of tabs in chrome and see how it does.

Cant really comment on the build quality. It's okay, i guess. I dont really like the glossy cover though. No problems with touchpad and keyboard so far. I've heard there are some issues with the 1215b (with amd e-350), but im not really sure what the problems are. Mind telling me more so i can check?

And i chose this purely because there's a usb 3.0 port, and because of the availability. Need to order the HP online, and I really want the pc now.
Also I'm planning to change the hdd to SSD later, and buy a hdd enclosure with usb 3.0 so i can use the hdd as external storage. So the usb 3.0 is quite important to me.

Thanks for the pics, dude. I guess I'll be heading over to lowyat tomorrow to get some hands-on time with it before i decide. I've been leaning slightly towards the 1215b mainly because of the 12.1in screen and the usb3.0, and planned to do exactly what you're thinking - get an SSD, and dump the 500GB HD into an external HD enclosure. But there were issues with the 1215b with the keyboard (prominent flexing) and the touchpad (erratic behavior, forcing some users to disassemble their units to "modify" the touchpad) which had me a bit worried. You can read more about it here : http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=89461

38mm thickness is correct, as least per official specs. So far, I've found no retailer in lowyat who is carrying the new DM1. In fact, most don't even know that the base price for the DM1 is RM1,099. Kept telling me I was lying until i should him the HP page.

LOL. The 1215B thread is suddenly turning into a DM1 thread. Anyway, to try to bring this thread back to topic... after much mulling around, I have decided that the 1215B is the right choice for me, beating out the DM1, the S205 and the e120.

I considered the S205 (RM1299) and the e120 (RM17XX) largely because I'm a big thinkpad fan, and i love the build quality, especially the keyboards. I would have gone for the e120 with its i3 2nd gen cpu if the notebook is to be my primary pc/notebook, but since it is not, i saw no reason to spend the RM400-500 premium on the e120. Frankly, this was the hardest choice to make - the e450 vs the i3 2nd gen.

Once I narrowed it down to the e450, it was easier to eliminate to other contenders. I liked the S205 for its keyboard as well, but it had a slightly shorter battery life, small touchpad, and no usb3. As for the DM1, it really is a good value at RM1099 and free backpack, but didn't like the keyboard layout as much and do I really need another backpack? In the end I chose to pay a slight premium for the slightly large 12.1in screen, the usb3, a better (to me) keyboard layout, and the fact that i can get it sooner rather than wait for 2 weeks for delivery. Oh yeah, I did consider the MSI u270? that another members suggested. Good price, good features, but didn't particularly like the look of it.

What I do like about the 1215B is that there's already a lot of info on the web about how to mod / improve the 1215B, especially the keyboard flex and the quirky touchpads.

Anyway, I've pm'ed one of the members for my order. Hopefully, I will be able to COD it soon. The first thing to do will be to slap in another 4GB of ram, a 64bit OS, and a lcd protector to cut down on the glare. Eventually, the plan will be to swap out the HD into a USB3 external HD, and pop in a small SSD to speed things along, but that will be a little later when SSD prices come down a bit.

If you can replace the HDD with an SSD, do share a guide with us. AFAIK, replacing it would involve dismantling the unit and also voiding the warranty. tongue.gif

Replacing the HDD does involve removing quite a number of screws. Thankfully, there are a few videos on youtube that walk you through the process. Also, the issue of voiding warranty is not as straight forward. Yes, you will have to cut through warranty stickers, but apparently, as long as you are not doing actual damage to your unit, your warranty is still intact. Or so it seems... hmm.gif

Pretty misleading in a way. Which reminds me I better fire off and email to Asus Malaysia and see if they have anything to say about it.

Then again, US and Europe do have better consumer protection laws than we do. Hopefully, this warranty issue applies globally, as opposed to only in countries where they have to, and not applied to wherever they can get away with it. But the reality is that eeepc users have been modding their netbook for years, though.

Wait a minute... does your avatar image mean that u work for asus??

he is Asus big fan, laugh.gif wink.gif , I think so,

Europe has the 2 years warranty,
US has liberated the memory upgrade thing, jailbreak,

Locally, I found Acer laptop sticks most stick on the screw, but service centre here don't really care if you not claiming the part you replace with them,

Dell, Lenovo, HP don't have stickers.

Nah, I don't work for Asus, I wish I did. laugh.gif

I'm just quite the Asus fan.

The problem with Malaysia is that the warranty might not be as easy as that as stated in the website as the people working in the service center are rather particular with that little warranty sticker.

Was thinking about installing Ubuntu, but right now Linux Mint looks pretty good. I'll probably dual boot between Win7 Starter32 and Linux Mint64 until I feel comfortable enough to ditch Windows altogether. Personally, I'd rather spend the RM350 bucks for a Home Premium64 on a SSD.

Right now, the lowest priced DM1 is on the HP website for RM1,099. You have to buy it from HP and wait for them to deliver to you (7-14 days) since no one at Low Yat have any stock yet. Not even the HP shop there has a unit to show off.

The closest thing i found to a review was a quick hands-on video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0YHbVsrQrw
I suspect it will be another week or two before it shows up in low yat.

Oooppps. I may have spoken too soon. Jayacom is selling the DM1-4010 now for RM1299...or so it seems. Better call them first to see if they got stock for you to fondle: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1831685/+300#

I thought about installing ubuntu on it as well. Maybe i will once i know whether the programs i have to use for work can be installed in linux or not. If not, maybe I'll stick with starter, and wait for windows 8 to release next year. Gonna be a looong wait though.... cry.gif

Ordered the notebook from forum member Devour yesterday afternoon. Manage to COD with him today around lunch time. First off, many thanks to Devour for a very smooth transaction. Very nice guy, professional, even willing to come to my area to do the COD. Plus, got a little discount from the standard RM1299 list price.

So on to my impressions. First off, i have to say that right now, a few hours after receiving the 1215B, I am both happy... and annoyed. I'll explain as i go along. (sorry, no pics)

First off, received from Devour the sealed box. Proceeded to break the seal, made sure everything was in the box, and started to boot up the notebook. Confirmed the specs (e450, Radeon HD6320, 500GB HDD, 2GB ram, etc). Wasn't able to confirm whether the ram was 1066 or 1333mhz, or whether it come in 1x2GB sodimm, or 2x1GB sodimm, but will do that later. Build quality is good. No flex on keyboard. Very firm. Mousepad is working fine, and quite big compared to ones I've had to play with. Had to move my thumb further down to reach the mouse buttons. The power brick is TINY. So, that part... happy. The annoyed part... well, after i did the once-over with Devour, we parted ways and I headed off to do some errands. Got home. Unpacked everything, started charging... and then I noticed it.... doh.gif

The black top lid is GLOSSY. I wanted a MATTE lid. I kicked myself, cause I forgot to specify to devour that I wanted to black MATTE. Called him to try to see if I can do a quick trade, but found out that his supplier provided him with only 3 1215B options - Red, silver, and Black. No Black glossy or Black matte, just black. Anyway, went online to check his supplier's website, and true enough, only 3SKUs, and only 1 sku for black. Sigh... cry.gif

So there you have it... for now. Great transaction with Devour. Happy with the product overall, but annoyed that there was no black matte option from Devour's supplier (and I suspect, most if not all the other suppliers locally). In fact, I checked with Asus Royal Club, and found out from them that the decision to bring glossy, matte or both, comes from the vendors / suppliers themselves. So, the short story is... if you wanted to get a 1215B but were worried about the keyboard flex and mouse issues, those things seem to have been resolved... as least on my unit. If you really wanted to get a black Matte one, make sure you specify (I forgot), but you may have to wait a while. But if do manage you find a matte black 1215B in the next few days, don't tell me. sweat.gif

rclxm9.gif cry.gif

PS: One more thing - there seem to be some discrepancies in the specs. Some vendors have their units specified as being e450s paired with Radeon 6310, which I suspect is a typo. But I wasn't going to make a deposit without being sure of what I was getting, so unfortunately for those vendors I decided to not deal with them. It did cross my mind that they could be old e350 sets overclocked to become e450s, but still paired with the old Radeon 6310s. In any case, ASUS should make sure that ALL their distributors have the correct specs. In case you were wondering... yes, Devour's specs were correct (Radeon 6320).

Checked my specs with CPU-Z before. The specs for the new 1215B are
AMD E-450 with radeon HD 6320
2GBx1 PC3-10700 RAM (means it's a DDR3-1333), samsung brand

And yeah, the only thing I didn't like with the 1215B is the glossy lid. But I intend to put a skin over it, so it's not really a biggie to me

Same problem here. I guess I'll need to look for a decent laptop skin that will make the fingerprint smudges look less obvious.

Matte silver, but no matte black?? blink.gif

Well, I have had the 1215B for almost a week. Haven't had a chance to play with it much cause of work, though I had the notebook with me in a small messenger bag throughout the whole day, and would occasionally pop it out to surf on the free hotel wifi. Overall, I have to say that I am quite happy with the purchase. Bought it for a little over RM1250, with a freebie cleaning kit(which is getting used regularly). Not the cheapest, but Devour was willing to come to my area to COD, so the extra bit was worth it. There were a few lowyat members pricing it at RM1229, who after a few PMs, stopped communicating. Mmmm.. Anyway, decided to deal with Devour who seemed more reliable. Also, bought a relatively cheap vztec slim vertical messenger bag (12in) to keep it in. Nice fit, but not too much space for anything else, which is OK with me.

External build quality:
Yes, the damn glossy lid is a finger print magnet, and for the life of me I don't know why companies like Asus just luurve to make these things glossy. I was thinking about it before, but now I'll definitely be looking to invest in a decent set of laptop and screen protectors. External build quality overall is quite good, with a few little niggles. The biggest annoyance is the LAN port - internally, it's not aligned exactly with the plastic hard shell. The first time I plugged in an ethernet jack, I thought the laptop would forever have a tail cause I couldn't get it out for quite a while. (Found out later that there was a similar complaint from a reviewer on Amazon)

Keyboard:
Keyboard is good. No flex issues at all. Liked the layout of this much better than the DM1, since I am a pageup/pagedown kinda guy. But lately, I've been doing the two-finger scroll though.

Screen:
My initial impression of the screen was pretty 'meh'. I think the screen is a side-lit led screen, since there is a slight light bleed along the edges. The biggest "turn-off" for me initially was that the screen looked like it was a low contrast screen and the colors not very saturated, especially on battery. Fiddling with the screen brightness either made it too bright or too "grey". It's only when I found some settings in the Catalyst control center and adjusted them (powerplay>varibright settings) that the screens look better. Mind you, putting the varibright settings on high will affect the battery. So overall, the screen is better the 'meh', pretty good overall, but not excellent. But i do like the not-so-thick bezel compared to the DM1 with its 11.6in screen

Haven't had to deal with the reflective screen issue much, since I've been mainly using it indoors. A few times, the reflectiveness was visible and a little annoying. I'm hoping a good lcd screen protector with a matte effect will improve it. I know there's armourone, and then there's the pricey one used for apple phones and ipads (which I have to order online). Haven't decided which one yet.

Audio:
Ok. No issues, though sometimes it does seem a little low. Had to gain / normalize the sound settings on media player classic to get the sound levels to what I want. Maybe I'm just a little deaf.... Haven't played music on it, so I can't say too much on overall sound quality.

Touchpad:
I gotta say, the synaptic touchpad is nice and big, much bigger that a lot of other bigger laptops. Quite usable, especially the multitouch side of things.

Bloatware:
Unfortunately, got quite a bit of bloatware to get rid off. I dumped express gate, and pretty much all of the installed Asus software, and slimmed downed Windows even further. I also dumped the eeepc boot screen. I have to say, the Eee PC logo is pretty damn ugly. I have learned to ignore the eeepc logo on the top-left corner cause I haven't figured out a way to get rid of it.

Heat / sound (loudness):
I don't find the 1215B loud at all, and haven't heard the loud fan issue that others in the past complained about. Nor is it particular hot, though there is more heat when the HDD is being used aggressively. An SSD would solve that issue I think.

Actual Use:
So far, I don't have any complaints at all. I haven't played any games, or done heavy work like photoshop or animation to really test the apu, but for everyday word processing, surfing, etc., the AMD e450 is more than up to the task. No stuttering issues in playing HD videos, though make sure you have the correct amd driver installed. The Broadcom wi-fi is fine, and I haven't had any issues with dropped connections or poor coverage. Haven't used the bluetooth or the usb 3.0 yet. What i particularly like is that i can hit Fn-Spacebar to cycle between power saving, auto power saving, and high performance to adjust cpu performance.

Next steps:
I plan to eventually upgrade to an SSD, and pop in 4GB of ram for 6GB total. Also, need to get a set of laptop and screen protectors.

My Windows Experience Index:

Processor: 3.9
Memory (Ram): 5.5
Graphics: 4.5
Gaming graphics: 5.9
Primary HD: 5.8

-----------
As I said earlier, I am happy overall with my purchase of the 1215B. With its charger and the Vztec bag i bought, the whole bag weighs just under 3kg, which makes it easier to carry the bag through the whole day. However, I think I would certainly have considered the 1015B if it came with the e350/e450 instead of the c50. The 1215B is more like an ultraportable and less of a netbook in terms of size. But then again, it does have a pretty nice almost full size keyboard.

Hope this review helps. cool2.gif

PS - On a side note, if you guys plan to install Windows 7 64bit, make sure you do plenty of research first. Another friend of mine also bought a 1215B and installed a 64bit windows. Although eventually he made it work, it took a while since some of the default 64bit drivers on the Asus website don't work. I do plan to install mint 64bit at some point in time, but I plan to research all the driver issues thoroughly beforehand.

Don't know why the DM1 desktop Graphics rating is only 3.8, since it's 4.5 on mine. Also, their memory and 3D graphics ratings are a little lower than my 1215B.

Thanks for the suggestion. The Vikuiti screen protector looks promising, but a little pricey i expect.

AO522 would be a great choice, if the price is right. Otherwise the 1015B still beats it flat in terms of price/performance.

FYI, Since there's been so much back and forth and conflicting info on this... For those of you considering the upgrade to an SSD, I contacted ASUS support on the issue of whether the new e450 1215B supports SATA2 or SATA3. According to them, SATA3 is supported.

The Service Tech, with the somewhat intriguing name of "Bubble Liu" wrote this:

"Hi, for this issue, your laptop can support SATA3".

This was in response to my question about SSD upgrades, and whether the 1215B can only support SATA2, or is also able to support SATA3. I get what you saying, and yes - SATA3 is backwards compatible. Anyway, I just sent her a follow-up email, this time asking whether the 1215B can support the full 6GB/sec SATA3 transfer speed, or whether the SATA3 will default down to SATA2 speeds. We will see what Bubble has to say.

I think they filed it under "keyboard filter or KB filter, if I am not mistaken. the ATK driver is 1.0.0.3, the KB Filter Utility is also v1.0.0.3, but does not work properly if I recall my friend correctly. There is another older version in the included files that he installed. YMMV.

The A50M chipset for the E-350 already supports SATA3 natively. Won't be too surprised about the E-450's support.

i do install that and it does not work...the solution is to google 'hotkey service'...already found it but they(asus) never put the software in the 1215B driver list tongue.gif

Right... got itchy fingers today, so went to lowyat and bought an extra 4GB ram (Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333) for my 1215B, bringing the total to 6GB. Booted up, tried to refresh my Windows Experience Index... BSOD. Opened up the covers again. Reseated the damn thing agan. Booted up into bios, and confirmed the bios is registering 6GB ram - check. Boot into windows. Run WEI test again... works...RAM score at 5.8... and then BSOD again. mad.gif

Anyway, after running a few tests (including memtest - no errors, but...), I decided to go back to Lowyat and get it replaced with a Kingston set (Thanks, C-Zone, for letting me swap the corsair with the Kingston! icon_rolleyes.gif )
Got back. Plonked in the ram, booted up, ran WEI... and success! No BSOD... so far. WEI ram score is 4.8, same as the kingston.

My new WEI scores:
Processor: 3.9
Memory (Ram): 5.8
Graphics: 4.6
Gaming graphics: 5.9
Primary HD: 5.9

Can't say for certain that all corsairs will give the same result, but just thought to share so if you do have the same issues, you should consider changing the brand. Having said that, when i checked the corsair ram using HWinfo64, the info highlighted in the image below was missing from the corsair ram, but present for the samsung and the kingston ram. Also, when ram testing using memtest, it could identify 2 dimms totaling 6GB, but it could identify 1 as being 2GB (samsung), but the other (corsair) as 0GB. Mmmm... Anyway, YMMV.

Home Premium 64-bit would be the best. I find it hard to recommend any other version since most people would never use most of the features in Professional and Ultimate.

BREAKING NEWS!!!
Anyway, got an updated email from Bubble Liew from ASUS support. Apparently, she made a mistake - ASUS 1216B DOES NOT support SATA3. So there you have it. I hope nobody ran out and bought a SATA3 SSD based on the earlier and incorrect announcement.

I just got my 1215B yesterday, I bought it instead of HP DM1Z
I planned to get this coz it has USB 3.0, also the screen is slightly bigger
unfortunately today I tried it and I got keyboard flexing problem when putting on a table to type
in fact, the keyboard is bouncy when u just use 1 finger to type, i feel so good
but when I used 2 hands to type I got bad feeling with it....its like on foam, FLOATING
should I send it back to ASUS for solving the keyboard flexing problem ?
or just let it ? some said the keyboard is default like that +_+ , is that true ?

My only disappointment is the keyboard flex, else very nice!

Hi guys,

I work from home 90% and used my ever reliable 6 years old desktop which run on Windows XP(SP3) with 1.5G DDR Ram only.I just need a simple netbook when I'm not at home basically to check email & casual surfing. Bought my 1215B (matte silver) two weeks ago & just got time to fiddle with it now.

Factors for buying - ASUS brandname, screen size (not to small or to big), weight, spec (with HDMI port, USB 3.0, full HD & Direct X 11).

The salesman told me that my unit come with 2X of 1G Ram instead of 1X of 2G Ram as advertised, (he may have conned me by swapping the Ram & keep insisting me to change with 2X 2G Ram for a further RM100.00 which I refused). Checking with CPU-Z reveals that both slot 1 & 2 occupied by 1024MB (10700), manufacturer - no name, max bandwith -PC3-10700 (667Mhz).

My WEI score initially was only 2.6 but after I use my flash drive as speed boost it increase to 3.8.

I find that the performance is quite slow compare to my desktop as I mention above eventhough my desktop runs on older processor, therefore I plan to upgrade to 4G of Ram (2G each slot).

Would upgrading it to 4G of Ram improve the overall performance? Is it worth it? Is Kingston Ram model KVR 1333D3S8S9/2GB 1333MHz DDR3 compatible? If yes how much it will cost?

Also plan to upgrade to Windows 7Home Premium 64 Bit later, which one to upgrade first to increase the overall performance, RAM or OS? coz my budget is a little tight now. By the way Is the upcoming Windows 8 compatible with 1215B?

Appreciate you guys comments, advise & recomendation. Thank You ...

Have you reformat it first ?
Overall performance would be upgrading the HDD..
2GB RAM is sufficient unless your usage are maxing it out currently..

Hi all, I am considering some netbook to buy: asus 1015b/1015px/toshiba NB520

purpose: for gf to carry to school. 12" is too heavy for her. we have laptop at home, so just need mobility.

my question: AMD or Atom better? I worry about the durability of AMD processor as I have a AMD laptop and spoiled. How about the battery life between 1015b and 1015px? similar? I afraid AMD platform eat battery faster...

Well, if you just need mobility, they all will serve the same purpose.

If you are to consider other factors such as performance, battery life or multimedia, then each of them have their own specialization.

AMD Fusion would be the most balanced and powerful overall. The new Fusion lineup is still leaps and bounds over the last generation AMD procs. Battery life between the 1015B and 1015PX isn't that huge but still noticable. The 1015B might get around 5 hours to the 7 in the 1015PX. The main difference why people prefer the 1015B is that is is more powerful as a whole system (no small part by the HD6250M GPU) and is a lot cheaper at RM800 compared to the 1015PX.

The NB520 would be more suited if you are targeting a more multimedia type netbook since its speakers are amazing for such a tiny thing. But still, Atom would be the weakest link.

SRP for this model is RM1,099 only - RM200 cheaper than 1215B

Spec below:-

Genuine Windows® 7 Starter 32-bit
AMD Dual-Core E-450 (1.65 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache)
2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (1 x 2 GB)

Since it is small, I have one other question.
Is it running cool (like my MSI CR650 on E-350) or is it running hot because of its cramp space and cooling?
Anyone please share info. Thank you in advance.

What you mean within warranty?I registered my product with HP and it's was under warranty.May I know what's problem your colleague facing? So far I check internet and look like no serious issue for this model.
Thanks

Hi all, I am considering some netbook to buy: asus 1015b/1015px/toshiba NB520

purpose: for gf to carry to school. 12" is too heavy for her. we have laptop at home, so just need mobility.

my question: AMD or Atom better? I worry about the durability of AMD processor as I have a AMD laptop and spoiled. How about the battery life between 1015b and 1015px? similar? I afraid AMD platform eat battery faster...

The durability usually got no direct connection with CPU.

*
I think windows 7 starter cannot use more than 2gb ram. So you better upgrade your OS first, and then your ram. CPU-Z showed i got samsung brand ram. So maybe the shop did swap the original ram...

My budget is also tight. Right now i'm wondering if i should upgrade my OS. Windows 8 is gonna get released next year onli. So I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading it to home premium now...

Tq appido, that's what I read & heard also, the system won't read 4G of ram, maybe due to limitation of starter edition, damn that salesman, I'm goin' to confront his boss this weekend, jaga lu. Any recommended place/shop to buy & upgrade the OS to Windows Home Premium64 bit?

Finally, ASUS Malaysia has decided to bring the 1215B with latest Fusion E-450 with SRP of RM1,299...much cheaper than HP DM1z. Below is the spec:-

EEEPC 1215B - 3 colour choices - Red, Black or Silver

AMD E-450 1.65GHz
2GB DDR3 RAM
500GB SATA HDD
12.1" 1366x768 LED
0.3 MP webcam
Windows 7 Starter (thus limited max memory to 2GB only)

1025 is the new line of EeePC. It has a newer, slicker look thanks to its metallic surface and has the newer Ceder Trail Atom processors.

After getting some useful recommendations here this morning and doing some survey on the internet, I have zoomed down into these two options mainly due to the size and light weight which is suitable for portability.

The Asus 1215B was initially looking good but there were several comments about the flimsy keyboard which appears to be flexing/bending when typing. Some reviews on the internet confirmed on the quality of the keyboard.

Then I came across the HP DM1 which seems to be a close competitor to the Asus 1215B. The 11.6" screen of the HP DM1 is slightly smaller than the 12.1" screen of the Asus 1215B, but the performance of the DM1 was said to be better than the Asus, scoring high points mainly on processing speed. Can someone confirm on this ?

The Asus 1215B is about RM1,250 and HP DM1 RM1,100, so price difference is relatively small. The build quality of the DM1 looks more solid than the Asus 1215B. My only gripe with the 1215B is on the keyboard, complaints pouring in from existing users.

Which do you think is a better netbook in terms of performance? Mainly web browsing and videos(720p or HD).

Any advice appreciated .

Added on November 1, 2011, 2:51 pmOne advantage the Asus 1215B has over the HP DM1 is availability of a USB 3.0 socket. Anybody used the USB 3.0 and noticed a vast improvement over the USB 2.0?

in terms of raw performance both are roughly the same... and for HD videos, they re practically the same (hardware Flash acceleration)

so i would say it all boils down to personal preference...

^ Should be the latter...

Asus 1215B (E450) is better because of the USB3.0~
Can consider Dell M102z as well, the HDD is faster

u need to ve a USB 3.0 device in order to take advantage of the USB 3.0 port... else it will still run in USB 2.0 speed...

the current only advantage of USB 3.0 now is that it can supply more current than USB 2.0, thus ur iPod and phones can charge faster...

I worried about the AMD processor. Previously I used one lappy with with AMD processor and it is hot after one year and spoil after 2 years. Thats why I am using intel i3 processor now and i am satisfied with intel processor. One more thing, AMD processor and GPU consume more power and make less battery life than Intel platform. Since my gf need to carry to school and in-out Singapore-Malaysia, so battery life is also a consideration for us. We are not using laptop for playing game. icon_rolleyes.gif

Just received news from a close buddy that HP is crap. So it's Asus. Nonetheless, he recommends the Apple Macbook saying it makes life a lot easier than going with conventional Windows. He is using the Macbook himself.

Anyone knows in what ways the Macbook "makes life easier" compared to Windows?

The Macbook costs almost 3X the Asus 1215B.

laugh.gif You'll get that all the time for Apple fanboys, especially one that's using an Apple product laugh.gif
It all depends on what you need with the laptop... if you're not familiar with Mac OSX and is not really keen on learning it, no point getting a Mac laugh.gif Even so if budget is a problem...

Here's a review on the DM1z, it should be physically similar to the Dm1 nod.gif
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/hp-pavilion-dm1.aspx

The keyboard is comfortable and should be better than that of Asus's 1215b nod.gif
But the touchpad sucks though haha laugh.gif

USB3.0 is significantly better than USB2.0, especially when you're transferring large files

Anyway, no considering the Dell M102z bro?
There's also the Lenovo Ideapad S205, similar specs.

Thanks for the link. I read that yesterday.

Although the DM1 looks good, I am leaning more to the 1215B despite minor complaints on the keyboard since the 11.6" screen on the DM1 may be a bit small. Although the 12.1' screen on the 1215B is just slightly larger, it will still make a difference.

I think I"ve more or less made up my mind.

I was longing for the 1215B but it wasn't out till last April so i hv to settled for 1215P. One thing I like about Asus is the battery life. I dont feel the keyboard is really that bad. No idea abt other netbooks performance and quality coz have not exploring any lately. But USB 3.0 is quite tempting.

had my eyes on dm1-4000au/4010au for sometime mainly because of its finishes.
its different from your pictures above; which i think it was taken from previous dm1 series.

saw this minilaptop/netbook offered by a computer show here, but they said no stock.
called HP and they confirm currently they have none available, but new stock will coming starting next week.
also, on HP online stock got new promotion for dm1-4000; which not as good as the previous promo.

We are not using laptop for playing game.  icon_rolleyes.gif

if you talking about previous genaration of AMD proc...
i do agree that it's consume a bit more power and can easily get hot...
but with the new AMD e-450 it's preety good...
it's only consume 18w and make it battery life last more longer than 35w proc
they definately better than Intel Atom in terms of performance...
but deffinately lost to Intel SB ULV laugh.gif laugh.gif

bought HP dm1 from it online store. rm1399 package with 3 yrs warranty, one usb mouse, and back pack bag. still got rm50 jasco voucher and world of sport 20% discount voucher with online product register. happy with my decision after check out asus 1215b, felt that asus product is filmsy, buttons for touch pad are hard to press, and key board doesn't feel solid.

I recently bought the new HP dm1, btw the pictures posted by fellow forumer on the top is the older version.

IMHO the new HP dm1 looks alot better than the Asus 1215b. I've had the touch and feel of the Asus 1215b, HP dm1 built quality feels much better...the color and design of the dm1 doesn't feel overly designed it suits all type uses whether office or casual, the 1215b has chrome linings for borders of the touch pad, personally I hate chrome linings(feels cheap).

The built in speakers are well placed and nice metal mesh design with a cool "B" logo in the middle (Beats Audio), in comparison to the Asus where its speakers are designed facing the bottom of the laptop with no dedicated design for its speaker cover. Audio quality from the dm1 is really good and sharp for its size and price range.

user posted image

Unlike other designs, the dm1 bottom cover to access RAM and HDD bays can be a pro and con thing, like any other laptop designs the Ram and HDD access have their own separate screw on lid/cover, DM1 has a single piece push and release cover and when removed it exposes the entire innards of the laptop, I personally prefer this design (takes some practice to remove the lid tho) the cover is flat unlike the others with vent holes

The down side dm1 screen size is smaller than the Asus, but hey.. bigger screen means higher power consumption right??

Other than the obvious stated, in my opinion for performance comparison wise there might not be or not in a huge leap be any performance difference between the two models. If ur a fan or keen to try out Fusion processors, either one will do just fine.... but I would certainly recommend HP dm1

12" sized netbooks are ideal for portability since they are small and light. A weight of approx 1.5kg isn't too heavy, especially since the netbook will be in a bag or something. When ladies go shopping you would be amazed how many things they can carry..

so far there is not netbook with N2800 sold in Malaysia. Asus launched 1025CE in Computex 2011 Taiwan with N2800.
Asus 1025CE
N2800 supports HD 1080P video with its better graphic card. Thus, there is a HMDI port in 1025CE which is unusual for old Atom netbook. rclxm9.gif
There is a rumor said that N2800 supports up to 4GB RAM

Right... got itchy fingers today, so went to lowyat and bought an extra 4GB ram (Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333) for my 1215B, bringing the total to 6GB.

May i ask why i had added another extra 2gb ram total is 4gb but in the wei only show that my ram 4gb(2.62 usable)?means only 2.62 gb ram for my laptop out of 4gb?additional im using window home premium x86bit now...

Well, after several months of infrequent but trouble free use, I am now starting to suffer from the dreaded screen flicker. Will now have to spend some time scouring the help forums to figure out what the hell to do to fix this. The screen flickers regardless of whether the laptop is plugged in or not, so it's not due to a faulty adapter or anything.

Some comments to potential buyers of the 1215B. Screen flicker not withstanding (which if I recall correctly is fixable... i hope), I don't have many complaints with the 1215B. The e450 cpu is not as zippy as an i3, and occasionally I do wish for something faster (especially on startup, and running office, especially the java-based Freeoffice), but for my basic use of surfing and occasional word processing, it's more than adequate. I've gamed on it, and it runs most of the older games and some of the newer games (on basic setting) just fine. Great when you want a little de-stressing when you are on the road.

I bought the 1215B for its larger screen, and the e450 cpu / amd graphics combo. I certainly don't have any complaints on these. However, the 1215B plus adapter plus bag, while lighter than a normal laptop, is not as ultralight as say a 10in netbook or one of the newer ultrathin laptops. So those of you who are looking for that eeepc 7in ultraportability, this is not quite it. In retrospect, i think my ideal model would be a 1015B with the e450 / amd 6320.

I have had no problems with either keyboard flex, or wifi connectivity issues. In fact, I am quite happy with the keyboard - solid, comfortable to use. Battery life ranges from 4-5 hrs depending on screen brightness, speed, and usage. This laptop will last 6 hours... if you just sit there and stare at the very dim screen doing nothing.

Well, I am off to find a fix for this stupid screen flicker. Will keep you guys updated on it.

Cheers

Added on November 25, 2011, 11:53 pmmmm... unfortunately, my go-to forum for 1215B issues at eeeuser is down for maintenance. Tried to install a few older drivers, but for some reason, the drivers didn't downgrade. Ended up reinstalling the must current driver, and that seems to resolve the issue for now. We'll see how long this lasts.

hello guys, my sister bought one for herself. recently there has been problem with charging the laptop. the power adapter is on (with blue light at the adapter) yet the laptop is not charging. has anyone had this issue as well?

I suspect there is something wrong at the charging pin, since it is so tiny. tried rotating the pin to several degrees and also applying a bit of pressure to it but it is still not charging ie. the battery indicator light is not charging.

do you guys have any input on this? or should I send for warranty straight away

thanks! smile.gif

Never had this charging problem. Once, I thought that the power adapter wasn't working, but found out that I didn't push the power pin all the way (until you get that click sound). Try that first, and if still doesn't work, send it in for warranty. Do let us know, though, how ASUS warranty support treats you - been hearing a lot of horror stories.

any 1215B users here?
Any commend on the performance?
Battery life?
Can I extended the display to my 24" monitor @ 1920 x 1200 (VGA)?
Can I enable dual screen (extended, not clone) at the same time?
