Yes you can do that.
But than it defeats the purpose of having a backup especially in case your tab crashed and cannot bootup. Than you can easily restore your backup from recovery. Without the backup in the internal sdcard - you will have to reflash the rom first and than only copy back your backup file to restore it

Don't decide based on ui smoothness. I have both and I always say the ipad ui smoothness gives new users a false impression that it is better. In fact I must say the galaxy tab 10.1 outperform the ipad2 in many areas: browser speed, flash support, youtubes viewing ( ipad2 can say is hopeless), email content download, file management
The strength in ipad2 - gaming, podcasts sync with iTunes, multimedia Andits vast amount of apps
Other I would say not much different
So decide based on what you want the tablet to do for you
I use my ipad2 only for viewing my iTunes podcasts, audible . For the rest the galaxy tab 10.1 , mainly browsing, rss, tweeter, Facebook, emails

My Tab could detect my Philip 120gb usb harddisk and with powered on my 500gb WD harddisk too through the USB dock connector

I am using GRIFFIN - it is one of the better ones ; easily obtainable at most Apple outlets. Used to sell for rm90+ but now prices already drop to around RM60
If you are really into sketching and drawing , NONE of the Android tablets will meet your needs except the Galaxy Note ; even the HTC Flyer lose out much to the note.

If writing - your best choice is Galaxy Note. You will be frustrated trying to write on all the android tablets
