My cousins there too. Working at restaurant as he just SPM leaver.

His weekly pay around 700aud and he is glad. Accommodation and meal covered. Which compared to here he earned around RM2k.

So I would said is really depends how much you earn back here in Malaysia to determine worth or not for that kind of salary in AUS.

Hello there, what are the prospects for graduate engineers with a year's experience in Malaysia to get a job in Aussie? I was thinking of applying the graduate skilled visa but don't really know what is the job market like in Aussie? Reading up online the job market doesn't look good as seen here: Link

Should I just apply the visa (hopefully obtain the visa within 3 months) then apply for jobs. Cause I don't really know if the visa validity starts once you obtain the visa or once you step into Aussie? To summarize my questions as follows:

1. Job prospects for graduate engineers in Aussie?
2. Current job market for engineers in Aussie?
3. Visa validity from visa obtained or move to Aussie?
4. Is it possible to convert this temporary visa to PR?

Need a change of scenery from Malaysia. Just want to move to a country that is much more efficient! rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the help icon_question.gif

If anyone's planning to work in Perth ( working visa ) then you can try McD spearwood ( very dodgy area ), but I've worked there for 2 years ( seen a body infront of store, hostage situation, etc-etc ).

If you're over 21 and willing to work from 10pm to 6am, pay is $22, late night rate 4 hours $24.50.
If you're a girl you can work as cashier, guy work at the back.

But it's a bone breaking job, good luck. If you ain't rich and you wanna survive in Australia you gotta work hard then.
Suck it up or go back to where you came from.

That is really high pay considering accommodation (the most expensive thing for anyone by far) is covered and food too. Plus he is not diploma/degree/trade qualified and only working in restaurant business (which, to be fair, you don't need professional qualifications for, so anyone can do it).

How lucky is he and how do the rest of us get that action?

What the fcuk, body and hostage and you're recommending ppl to work there? We barely got over the siege.

Bit sexist right if girl work front only... Aussie girls are attractive but you don't find a lot of them at fast food counters. They got the waitressing and bartending gigs. Or fashion outlets.

Bone breaking? Sounds like fun.

lol thats because all the heavy lifting and machine cleaning are all done by guys of course.
The reason I recommend that place is because they are always hiring new staffs.
I've been there for 2 years, have to survive mate no choice.
The pay was great, job was tiresome but not stressful, I just need to complete everything and off I go ( get free breakfast as well lol ).
But the job really screwed up my lifestyle.

Night shifts 99% you would get it because nobody wanna work there
I mean if you're on a 1 year working visa you could possibly saved up to $10 to 20k easily working there.

My old korean housemate manage to save around $10k just by working at a cafe which pays $18/h, but he gets free food and don't often go out.

But he was paying $140/week rent and only does one job, while my other McD taiwanese workmate was paying $90/week rent from a taiwanese landlord.
She was working 2 jobs and gets free food as well from the other job. I reckon she would have saved a lot !

if not china town and earn $10 per hour, up to those who wish to go there and work.

There are rooms where you can share it with another person, hence the cheap rent smile.gif Utility bills are all included as well ( look up gumtree )
Not within the city of course, you won't get that kind of rate even if you share the room.

over here, share rooms could be like 150-250 near city. slightly away from city (bus) for single room is like 200-250+. before utilities normally but those are very little.

glad I am living in Perth then, I am renting a whole house ( 3 room 1 bathroom ) that cost me $420 per week.
Train to my workplace only takes 15 minutes.
And properties in my suburb are 400-550k which I will be able to afford after next year.
There are a lot of part time jobs in Perth, and rent is not that expensive over here if you live away from the city.

It really depends on what kind of field you're aiming for but I'll answer the questions.

1. If you aren't a local grad. Shit. If you're a local grad, slightly less shit.
2. Good. If you're the type they want. Not just normal engineers but specialized ones like SMP, Structural, Instrumentation, HVAC, Subsea, Controls, Telemetry and so on.
3. Depends on the visa but generally a graduate skilled visa starts upon arrival with an "Arrive by no later than" date
4. Yes, if you meet the requirements of a skill residency visa. If your new permanent visa invitation is not granted by the time your temp visa runs out, you'll have to leave.

Efficiency? Wrong country mate.

Thanks for the heads up @empire23. Well I'm at the "shit" position as mentioned local grad in Msia haha. Currently I'm working for an O&G MNC for about a year or so, I have had some experience in Subsea Manufacturing, Pipeline/Riser Structural, Project Management, etc. But all and all within a years worth experience.

MY preferred option is to move to US but with all the restrictions and the long process, I'd thought Aussie was a not bad option. I had a friend who studied with me locally here in Msia and was able to secure this visa then get a job (however not engineering related). I feel that being too comfortable in a country that is not making things any better comes with frustration! Just want to move out and start a new life before committing my lives worth (car, house) here. I'd rather pay taxes in a more established country then what is going here. Malaysia will still remain a third world country for another century or so, its time to step up the ladder and climb up to a better place. "YOLO" cool2.gif

Australian companies tend not to hire people without residency. Also most of them do not consider most non-Australian experience. Thus with a non-Australian degree you're at a severe disadvantage. Plus a year's experience is very little at best.

In all honesty I'd move back to Malaysia if I were paid the same I was over here, to me it makes no real difference, I'm in it for the money, plain and simple.

I'd rather return to Malaysia under an expatriate package for a short stint. Everyone is in for the money too bro!

Truth to be told foreign passport holds better money / income. Working in your own country you're better off considered as cheap labour.

Not really. I've held an Australian passport for 3 years now.

We've got expert engineers doing FIFO out of Malaysia on commissioning getting paid more than me. But of course they're at the top of their game.

I hope my Canada PR gets approved soon so I can get my feet wet over there.
