If u can get a job, even at 'low end' jobs such as cleaning, hospitality, retail etc. u still can have a pretty decent life.
The AUD stretches further than the RM. AUD 1000 can pay for your car, groceries for 2, pay all utilities for a month. And a low end job earns you 687 ($20 ph * 40 hours less tax) per week. Housing is expensive so must be prepared to commute a longer time if u want affordable accomm.
Still, can't beat the increasing fanaticism, quality of education, quality of life etc.

I really don't see how living near minimum wage can be considered in the same breath as quality of education/life ect laugh.gif

Which was no point anyway since I lompat to Gorgon.

Well at least they pay me to FIFO.

You're damn lucky mate. My faced redundancy and sitting his butt at home for almost 3 months now. The whole 60 over engineers being closed down. No new project.
Everyone here seems waiting for something, expecting this year quickly gone. rclxub.gif

No more new projects after INPEX's Ichthys up north, after the environmentalists smacked Woodside, all new LNG development in Browse is to be via FLNG tech built in Korea like Shell's Prelude.

Coal has stopped due to the success at stopping Adani's Carmichael development in the courts, so the others are spooked and the same goes with Iron ore.

Plus the government is rubbish, how many budget writedowns do we need? That's why I applied for Canadian PR, but for now FIFO out of Malaysia seems to be easiest.

Lets be honest, here are the facts;

1) Coal will become less and less popular but it is our 2nd biggest export
2) LNG will not go up in the mid term and it is a sector that hires only morons like me, specialized. That's our 3rd biggest export.
3) Agriculture is screwed because we have a giant drought that is made worse by climate change.
4) That leaves our largest export, iron ore, which happened to just drop in price. Again.

-Academic employments - I could not think of a better subtitle , but this refers to employment in regards to your unit of study , so in my case It would be employment in the sector of marketing , As of November 2011 , the government has instilled newer visa regulations that has allowed any graduating students from an Australian higher education institute to stay for 2 years in search of employment after graduation , this is a new visa implementation that has taken effect for students applying for they're first student visa after November 2011 , any students or returning students that have applied for their visa before November 2011 (people like me) sadly would not be eligible for this sub  form of the visa, If you are wondering what visa it is to get more information , search up Post Graduate Work Stream visa. My personal reasons for leaving were confined to my personal wants as well as my visa being not eligible for the post graduate work stream which led me to eventually pursue a career back home.

-What happens after the 2 years?
Well after the 2 years, when your visa ends at the end of the postgraduate work stream , there is no leeway or excuse for you to stay in the country , So my advice to all the young upcoming graduates would be  to undertake an internship or a work placement in the final year of your studies , Why? This better your chances for your prospective employer to consider sponsoring you to continue to work in Australia , and with the additional 2 years there would have plenty of time to decide if you are worth their time , and decide to sponsor you accordingly,  When an employer sponsors you, you are bound to the company for up to 2 years (depending on the company) after which you are eligible to apply for a Permanent Resident Visa , In my year of studies we did not have the post-graduate work stream which led to an influx of students picking up skilled courses such as accounting , actuarial studies as these courses are in the skilled visa application group which allows for temporary stay after graduation , lucky current students now do not have to conform themselves to courses that are *safe* and guarantees employment unless you are genuinely interested in accounting , then go for it wink.gif as I mentioned before, POST GRADUATE WORK STREAM.

*
My advice is take an SOL skill, sit for IELTS early and score 8s, then just apply for SkillSelect when you get the results for your finals with your letter of completion. By the time your student visa dies you'd already have received an invitation to apply for PR.

To be honest with you, I feel where I studied didn't really make a difference to me lol.

I'd probably be the same now even if I came out of Caltech, albeit with more bragging rights laugh.gif

I thought OnG should have pretty good work life balance. I know the guys in my company work a roster of 3 on 4 off 3 on 5 off.
*
Project and operations very different. I'm project side so we do fast and furious everyday.

With Gorgon being behind schedule they're pushing hard for results. Most of us are already pulling 12 to 14 hours a day.

27/8 roster plus throwing in the redeye flight it's more like 28/7. We build it then fark off and move onto the next project.

At least u have a job.
Do you get adequately compensated, as opposed to $25 p/hour, go to work and leave on the dot wage slaves?
*
Adequately compensated is debatable considering everything. Sure 100 an hour looks nice but I think it isn't much considering what I have to give up.

Also there's a chance I might get nightshift.
