QUOTE(rexeren @ Sep 23 2011, 04:46 PM)
Today Cottie gave me the shock of my life. It was lunch time and I brought along some dragonfruit, bengkuang and her favourite capsicum.

I gave her small bits of dragonfruit and bengkuang for her, after a few bites she began to act weirdly like vomit act or trying to get something out of her mouth. Didn't seem like she is choking as she can still walk around calmly, so I suspected it could be bengkuang stuck on the roof of her mouth (according to hedgie forums).

So I tried to place her down with her back on my lap and open her mouth but she kept struggling to get up. I can see that she was very uncomfortable and she kept trying to dig it out with her paw for half an hour but to no avail. I thought of inserting my finger into her mouth but was also thinking of her teeth sinking into them.

1 hour passed and I thought that I need to sacrifice my baby finger to free her from the suffering. Then I saw the piece of capsicum which was long, thin and solid enough to insert into her mouth. So I held her still and insert the vege inside her and boy did she clamp on it hard. With a few more tries I managed to shove the bengkuang piece off the roof and .. Yay! She returned to normal, swallowed the bengkuang, chomp down on her saviour capsicum and kept eating as usual ^^

Thanks for reading this far.. XD

Phew! I'm glad she's safe. Chubster choked on a kibble once as well & my heart just stopped.
I posted a link here a while ago about helping choking hedgies.
Here it is: http://chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5280

It just kills you to see her choking, isn't it? D:

QUOTE(Devilene @ Sep 23 2011, 05:16 PM)
ah i see... Coz I'm worried feed her too much and same time worried the worms will die before l even used up half of them... the worms are also freaking my housemate out XP

For natural balance, any of them is fine? Or must it be a specific one?
*
Feed the worms with oatmeal & carrot/potato/apple/whatever veggie/fruit you have.
I guess you can feed them any kind but check the ingredients first. Make sure the fat content is less than 20%.

Anybody tried this before???
just saw in pet store...  ( http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...073&hl=hedgehog )
RM29 250g..

I haven't.
I don't buy commercial hedgehog food because the pros say that it's not recommended.
If you do buy it, I guess you can mix it with RC. smile.gif
Pretty costly though, this hedgehog food.

QUOTE(Devilene @ Sep 24 2011, 05:52 AM)
Interesting, the canned worms and crickets are tempting too (no more taking care of live worms that attracts ants X_x ) and also that nice running wheel they have but rm100 X_x

I've look up on the wheels and running balls at Sunway Pyramid's pet lover shop but most of them are cracked >.>
*
Try not to buy the canned insects. I've read of cases where hedgies get constipated because of the lack of moisture in the insects. If you know Jusco Bukit Tinggi, Klang, there's another branch inside & they sell them in good condition. smile.gif
If you can't, I can buy one for you & pass it over to you in Sunway Pyramid if you go there on a weekday or something since I study nearby. smile.gif

Telileti> Ah i see, well back to taking care of a bunch of worms thn XD (hope my landlord don't chase me out coz of it haha) How much is the wheels sold there?
Your landlord won't even know it if you keep the worms in a tiny container. wink.gif
It should be the same price as the other branches in M'sia.
If I'm not mistaken, it's RM85.90 or around that price range.
More than 80 but less than 90, that's for sure.

I have to buy my female SnP back because the owner had an emergency. I guess I'd have a bit of time left with her before I have to sell her again. unsure.gif

EDIT: I checked the price of the wheel & it's RM85.80. smile.gif I even took a picture of it but I lost the cable for my phone so... blush.gif

Does this plague infect superworms or mealworms?
Or both?

Ah...
I bought my mealworms a few weeks ago & only fed them calcium powder & yeast till today. Too much work to feed them oats because of the clean-up after a week. They're miraculously still alive.
They shouldn't have the disease since they're still alive, I guess.

with your ratio of hogs under your care and quills lodged, count your blessings woman  dry.gif
blush.gif True. I probably shouldn't handle them on the carpet since the quills stick right up on those fabric.

QUOTE(Devilene @ Sep 27 2011, 08:21 AM)
Telileti> ouch, maybe try wearing a in house slipper D: oh and the wheel you mentioned, is it as big as the wodent wheel?
xD I should go buy those bunny house slippers.
Hmm, it's big enough for a hedgehog?
I wouldn't recommend using wodent wheels as well since it makes it difficult for hedgies to exit once they're done running.
I don't see an issue with using a silent spinner (rip-off) since I've never had a case where the hedgie's nails got caught betwen the slit.
If you can DIY, definitely do so.
If you're too lazy like me, buy the RM85.80 one. xD

I wish I had 'greens' for my hedgies to run about. The nearest 'green' that I have is a large field that's overgrown and unused, which makes me rather hesitant in bringing them there since they could all run in different directions. rclxub.gif

your hedgie have problem with wodent wheel?
*
No, I've checked out the largest wodent wheel and the hole for the hedgie to enter through look like a tight squeeze for my fat, little hedgies. blush.gif

Plus, hedgie forums state that they're not recommended so I didn't buy one.

Sierra's going to a new owner on Monday.

I call her Girlie but her former owner called her Sierra. smile.gif

wait ._. why was she given back to you again?
*
I bought her back because the owner couldn't take care of her due to personal reasons.
I guess I can spend more time with her before she goes to another owner again. smile.gif
She's a real sweetheart. Doesn't like to sit still & squirms a lot in my hands.

Thanks lots!

I study in Sunway Uni so I'm pretty free on weekdays.
Hmm, I have an assignment due this week so I'll be really busy this week.
I can COD in Sunway Pyramid for the wheel on Friday or something if you're free.

RM85.80, I think.
Like I said, I'm busy this week so I might not be able to find the time to go buy it. I'll try though & I'll let you know.
Someone else is interested in buying the wheel as well. xD

Don't use Blackwood.
Try Natural Balance.

Refer this page for the food list:
http://www.freewebs.com/thehedgieden/hedgehogcare.htm

Important:
The fat level needs to be HALF of the protein level.

"When choosing a food look for something that has a meat as its first ingredient. Stay away from foods that contain-

*by-products (poultry by-product for example are beaks, feathers, feet etc),
*ethoxyquin, BTA, BHT (all three are used as preservatives, and are linked to cancer),
* soybean meal (only humans and pigs can digest this....but if a food does contain it it isnt a HUGE deal)
* fillers (corn, wheat etc). Fillers simply temperarily fill up an animal, but pass right through the bowles with out providing your animal with any nutrience to speak of. Therefore your animal eats more, and poops more.

Try and go for a food that contains a ________ meal (ie chicken meal, poultry meal, fish meal yadda yadda) vs just pain chicken or fish. The difference between a "meal" and just normal meat... "

Added on October 6, 2011, 7:26 pmI was handling Huffster yesterday & I noticed a white 'thing' on his tongue. It looked like one of his tooth grew out of his tongue. D:

I'm quite sure of it because I paid close attention while he was licking his tongue.

I tried to pry his mouth open by letting him bite on the wooden chopsticks that I use to pick up the mealies but I couldn't tell for sure if it was a tooth or a whitish long thingy because he wouldn't open up after two bites.

Do you think a vet could check him out without putting him under anaesthesia? sad.gif

Finally! A decent documentary about hedgehogs. biggrin.gif

I've been waiting for this documentary ever since I saw the introduction of Pets 101 on Animal Planet.

I asked this here a while ago but no one seemed to notice it.

I noticed an abnormal growth on Huffster's tongue recently & it looked to me like one of his tooth grew out of his tongue.
I don't think it's a tooth but it certainly doesn't look normal.

If I bring him to the vet, do you think he'll be put under anaesthesia for the vet to check his tongue? sad.gif

No picture because I can't (and don't dare) to pry his mouth open.

I see some white finger-like growth sticking out of the bottom of his tongue whenever he licks his nose.

I'm going to monitor it for a week or two first and see if it's growing.
