Yeah it's pretty dusty when you first put it in. What you can do is shake shake the cage like ummmm ... you know like how those "pro uncles" use big wok to cook char quey tiao? When they take up the wok and start pushing it back and forth to stir the quey tiao vigorously. Did you get what I mean? Hahahaha After that it'll be fine already, but of course you may have a different judgement. |

At 1st i was so worried i got the wrong one cos i saw it was quite dusty & my hammie will not like it as he was kept grooming himself minutes after i put the bedding, but i guess it's normal cause he been grooming quite alot lately. It's kinda weird actually.. he never been grooming such frequently at previous. Now it like groom eat, groom sleep.. wake up groom again & it like takes 10 min long. Any hammie owner experience the same situation as mine? Will do what according you teach me when i change their bedding the 2nd time. Thanks alot ya |

QUOTE(starrynight @ Nov 7 2012, 07:34 AM) Hi, sorry I got this info a little too late. I had to ask an experienced owner from hamster forum to help me out. Thank you so much for the information. Thankfully by the end of the week, after seven doses of antibiotic, my hamster bounced back to her healthy form. The infected skin are healed 90%, and her bottom is no longer drenched in urine. Changing the bedding every two days definitely helped. The only bad news is that she was too disturbed to rest well (had to wake her up during the day to feed her the med and clean her butt with water at night) and she's not eating well. Antibiotics will not help with getting rid of the fungal infection. The only reason that I can think of for her hammy being on an antibiotic is because one of the scabs from the fungal infection has become infected. If there is an infection, I would recommend that she stay on the antibiotic. I also hope she is giving her hammy a probiotic as well to keep her gut flora healthy while on the antibiotic, for example plain sugar free vanilla yogurt. I had several of my hamsters contract a fungal infection and with the help of my vet I treated it successfully. Here are some pictures: .... I did looked up on the vets. Thanks for the info (again). I'm pleased to note the female vet - Melissa, in TTDI Damansara in well informed on hamsters. Seems that she herself kept hamster years before. The Indian male doc was the less attentive one. I asked the vet about putting povidone-iodine on hamster since it's used to stop fungal infection for human and there are scrubs prescribed for hamsters for this situation. She advised me not to since hamster's skin are really thin and the solution can be too strong. A good substitute will be salt water. I also bought my hamster a bottle of liquid vitamin, Bengy brand (only RM5!?), but she won't take it. It's blue in color and when it accidentally touched my skin, it felt like detergent. Can anyone suggest a very good vitamin brand that is less strong.I think my hamster is kinda picky over food now. The other brand I saw in Mid Valley was Vitalite but its priced at RM21. Thanks! |

So yeah, probably just wait a little while more and enjoy tomorrow's celebration first! |

Babybb and kitsune,
This is what I got from the skin infection experienced hamster owner It might be worthwhile to switch to a new bedding temporarily. I don't know if they have access to Carefresh bedding, but that is a good bedding to use. They should not be using Pine, Cedar, and Cotton based bedding. These Pine and Cedar can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues and the Cotton based beddings can be accidentally ingested and will end up killing the hamster because it will become blocked in their digestive system. Here are some bedding links that back this up. http://www.hamsterif...eddingguide.cfm http://www.nobodysha...d=116&Itemid=68 If after a couple of weeks on a new hamster safe bedding and the skin issue has not gone away, I would definitely recommend a trip to the vets. ringworm and mites are becoming epidemic in store based hamsters and other exotic mammal pets (ferrets, rabbits, etc.). Especially internationally! Tell your friend that not all mites can be seen, some are only visible under a microscope. If your friend is not in Malaysia and they need help locating a vet, let me know and I can try to do some looking around. Treatment for mites and ringworm should not cost too much in terms of the medicines used, so I hope they will take them to the vets if the situation requires it! As for your other friend, that is great news about the recovery. The only vitamin supplement that I can recommend for small exotic mammals is http://www.exoticdvm...ntGroup_id=125 I know of someone who uses this with his old hammy and he says it helped his skin, fur, and energy levels. It may be worth a shot. Added on November 16, 2012, 9:37 pmMy comment : take this advice as guideline for I know we are not accessible to a lot of things like them. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Thanks starrynight for all the useful information. My hammie bald patches are not big kinda small with black spot on it. It occurs since i changed to his new bedding "Homefriend" bedding within 1 week. Now i have cleaned his cage & put nothing but only soft tissue for him. Hopefully condition will be better without any bedding. I might afraid he allergy with his new bedding. Seriously my hammie already 2 years old by tomolo. I know he left not much time although i'm kinda selfish to wish my hammie to have a longer life to accompany me. He been part my my life, part of my family. I really cant imagine how it feel when someone i really care & love are leaving me soon. I know his condition better than anyone else. He appeared become thinner since last week i saw him. He such a fighter & i know he always wanna be there for me. When i'm sad, when i'm cry, he always there for me. When i held him up & talk with him, he would stare & listen patiently. He would stare at me & sit quietly in my hand when i'm sad & cry. It's like he knew i was unhappy & he really there to cheer me up. I love him more than i love myself. I provide him only the best & i dont mind travel few hours just to get it. I dont want him to suffer, i dont want him to get any sick. I want him to be a healthy little fella when i brought him home that moment. |

I totally understand what you mean. My ham is about 7 or 8 months old, if I'm not mistaken. Sometimes I wish I could turn back time and look at the little ham that I brought home. Whom I took time to tame.
Sadly we can't fight against nature so the best we can did is ensure they have a loved life. My little ham too is always clutched in my hand and lets me stroke him to sleep. I also believe there's something so pure and innocent bout the way a ham eats. Really innocent. Sometimes I do wonder if I'm such a hands on owner, spoiling him .. I think when I'm a mother, the baby will never be out of my sight lol. Anyways the best compliments I got after I showed photos and tell stories about my hamster, 3 different friends told me they want to become my hamster and if they are hamsters, they want to follow me home. For the sake of my little rodent, I research and read a lot from forum before and after I got him. Just to give him the best I could. Happy birthday to your ham ham. Wish I knew when my ham was born XD |

babybb: I've had hamsters who "went home" in my house. What I can do is try to smile when they go because we both given each other the best during this short period. When my hamsters "go", I want them to "go" peacefully. My last hamster breathed her last at her favourite corner, although it was sad, but I smiled because I felt she went away peacefully.
Sorry for the long message haha, just sharing my experiences. |
