KUALA LUMPUR: Twin sisters Aimee Teong Chuin Ai and Charlotte Teong Chuin Yi have been offered seats to study finance and economics from several top universities in Britain, Hong Kong and Singapore.

However, the two top STPM achievers had to decline because all they wanted to do was to study medicine at Universiti Malaya (UM).

The dreams of the 20-year-old twins finally came true when MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong presented them with the offer letters during a ceremony at Wisma MCA yesterday.

Dr Wee said the sisters had selected medicine, dentistry and actuarial science as their top three choices.

Initially, elder sister Aimee obtained the offer to study actuarial science at UM while Charlotte was offered the same course at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

“However, after giving much consideration to the courses available, both of them realised that they wanted to pursue their favourite subject of medicine,” he said after a press conference here yesterday.

Dr Wee said the two approached the MCA education bureau and hoped it could help them obtain places to study medicine at UM.

“The MCA central committee agreed that the party should provide assistance to the sisters as they are the country's top scorers and should remain here.

“It is also in line with the Prime Minister's call to encourage talent to remain and serve in the country,” he said.

He said the party managed to submit their cases through MCA central committee member Datuk Dr Hou Kok Chung, who was also Deputy Higher Education Minister, to minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Noordin.

The ministry agreed to offer both of them places to study medicine at UM.

Aimee said she did not feel sad when she had to decline the offers from overseas universities.

She added that it was her dream to study medicine at UM.

Sister Charlotte said she was thankful for the help rendered to them by MCA.

“I have faith in our education system,” she added.

Even a top scorer can't get first choice of their course, and how about other who their result is slightly less then them.

It show that totally unfair condition during the selection of course by upu to us.

The sisters wanted to study medicine. Only UM gave them this. Of course they went for UM. It's their INTEREST.

Overseas uni gave econs and other courses that the sisters were not interested in.

What a no brainer.

They will regret their decision. There are currently 32 medical schools in Malaysia...producing about 6000 doctors per year. If we include graduates from India, Russia, Indonesia, Egypt....you know what I'm trying to say.

Go study dentistry instead. Too many doctors already in Malaysia.

Do you guys realise that without MCA's intervention they would have only have had actuarial science?

What does that tell you about the system in place now?

Even top students do not get the choice that they want. They are only getting it now after MCA intervened. Why is this so?

My dear UTM lecturer,

You fail to see the big picture. All these 6000 doctors will be absorbed into Ministry of Health to serve their housemanship. You have no idea how serious it is currently with such a big number of doctors flooding the hospitals. One department has up to 60-70 house officers when the number of patients remained much the same. Previously 1-2 house officers is in charge of one whole ward but now one house officer is in charge of 4-5 patients.

With so many procedures to perform, to observe, to learn there is inadequate exposure. The govt is so desperate that small district hospitals e.g. Hospital Tanah Merah in Kelantan is opened up for housemanship. No specialist, no expertise, no facilities, what do you think these doctors will become?

QFT. My bro's gf who is working as a pharmacist in Sungai Buloh Hospital told me that there is a ratio of 10 doctors to 1 patient in the hospital.

QFT. My bro's gf who is working as a pharmacist in Sungai Buloh Hospital told me that there is a ratio of 10 doctors to 1 patient in the hospital.

I mean, seriously? What you think this is - House MD?

Lots of ppl out there have no idea how's the situation in the hospitals right now. To be a good doctor, you need the necessary knowledge and good exposure to all the clinical scenarios, procedures, protocols and the way the hospital runs.

What the current house officers lack is the latter. Of course the situation is even worse for graduates from Russia, Indonesia, etc. With their poor knowledge and poor exposure, these doctors have been given the license to kill.

*
yup yup.........

the head of the doctor that retired told me that there's so many doctors now.......not like last time

and i know from HO and MO that the OT system will be replaced by shift system............so basically this means......there is a lot of doctors....maybe too much for the gov to handle liao

Do you guys realise that without MCA's intervention they would have only have had actuarial science?

What does that tell you about the system in place now?

Even top students do not get the choice that they want.  They are only getting it now after MCA intervened.  Why is this so?
*
actuarial science actually a course that also hard to get..there's alot of top student who choose UM medicine but the place for it is limited..if u think about it almost all top student wan to be a doctor and im sure most of it will apply for UM..so these 2 girls just use backdoor to get in..

That's right...starting Sept with the exception of HUKM (October), all hospitals with house officers will start the shift system. Shorter working hours, no on call allowance.

It's a sad situation. Seriously dentistry is the way to go. Less competitive, not saturated and you get to treat patients as well.

I know actuarial science is difficult to get in.

But my point is they are amongst the top scorers yet they couldn't get the course that they want without intervention from MCA.

Heard on the radio, they were reducing housemen working hours so that the housemen can get adequate rest and would not be stressed out.

Or perhaps the large number of housemen has something to do with this too.

But if there is such a law, means doctors can't dispense drugs. Maybe I am just too used to the way things are now at the moment, you go to the clinic, you go see the doctor and you get the drugs as well.

this.........definitely got to do with it

hospitals always need a certain number of staff........

gov can reduce the hours meaning there is extra staff

Wow. Seems they are reducing housemen working hours from 90 hours/week to 54 hours/week. Huge reduction.

Not for STPM, these twins are 2 of the 8 persons who scored 5A 4.00CGPA in STPM. SPM is nothing compared to STPM.

You are not wrong actually. My company runs a clinic, and previously we have a pharmacy set up in front, so that when the doctor prescribed drugs, the patient will go to the pharmacist to get it.

When we realised later that the doctor can *actually* prescribe drugs WITHOUT going through the pharmacist, the company decided to scrap the pharmacy. Only when the patients require a "refill", the doctor will write a prescription letter for a nearby pharmacy.

Yeah, the irony. The question is why should they depend on MCA to get into UM med in the first place?

They are quite smart in going to MCA. If they went to DAP, DAP will point out why 2 of the 8 top scorers of STPM cannot get into their first choice course, i.e. medicine.

They will regret more after this, when no one can help them in unfair competition in college and career. Should choose country based on merit system not race.
