just a quick thought that lead to a (maybe silly) quick question:
saw a promotional video of monash the other day and in there there was this "courses in monash that are in the world top rankings" or something like that and one of it was History.

so, do people go to monash to do their humanity majors/courses? is it a wise choice or is monash better for their engineering/science/business schools?

History as an area of study is not offered in the Malaysian campus.

To answer your question, yes there are people who do their arts degree in Monash otherwise the arts school wouldn't be existing. Of course, the arts school (frm the number of students) is smaller than other schools except med perhaps.

I don't see why the arts school is any 'lesser' than other schools?

Hello. I applied for Bachelor of Business and Commerce at Monash Sunway for Feb intake.

1. First, I would like to know how are the lecturers for this degree? Are they good (if you transferred to Caulfield/Clayton, are they as good as the lecturers there)?

2. How many students are there in one class usually? Are there like few classes taking the same degree as in like same intake but different class?

3. I was thinking of transferring to Caulfield for either Bachelor of Business or B.Commerce majoring accountancy in the second year. I want to know whether it would be hard? Will my final cert show one degree or Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree?

4. And if anyone transferred, can you tell me your experience? Was it hard blending in? Was the course structured very different? And is the lecturer very hard to understand?

Please reply because I need to make urgent decisions. Thank you very much >_<

I actually got the offer for Bachelor of Business in Monash Berwick campus. But I'm unsure of enrolling there because the degree was just establish this year. There are quite little students there (I heard). I prefer a more friendly environment with loads of people. I have also read a few forums that international students are not really welcome warmly there.

Hi, I'm a 2nd year Business and Commerce student
1. Monash lecturers are highly qualified, with years of experience behind them. They are really helpful, they'd be happy to help you with any problems. All my lecturers so far are PhD holders. Though I have not transferred to Caulfield or Clayton, I would think there is no real way to compare between the lecturers here and there. Of course, some would be better than the others. A few lecturers in the Sunway campus are actually the head examiners for their particular subjects so I guess the lecturers here and there are more or less equal.

2. In lectures, there could be anywhere from about 100-200+ students. There are a few tutorial classes with different time slots to choose from for each subject. Each tutorial class is usually limited to about 20 or so students (choose early for best time ).

Overall, its quite easy to to transfer. Your final cert will show the Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree AND your what you have majored in (Accounting and Finance for example if you're doing a double degree).

4. From what a senior told me, its not hard blending in. There are many Malaysians there, some of which are from the same batch with you. Course structures and subjects available vary for different campuses, so its important to plan your course beforehand. Understanding lecturers would not be a problem, as they do speak English

What if I'm not doing a double degree? Will the cert still show what I've majored in? Or it's just Bachelor of B & C

your major will only be shown in the transcript as specialising in XXX(eg specialising in accounting,banking and finance)
in the cert should be just Bachelor of B&C

1.if you transfer to Caulfield/Clayton, your degree wont be Bachelor of Business/Commerce anymore.it would be either Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Commerce. i agree with what monkey.boy say about comparing lecturer here and there. i personally think lecturer in sunway is better as they are more easier to be approached(some of the lecturer, you can just consult them without making an appointment).on the other hand in australia, they are more systematic (you either consult them during their consultation hours or make an appointment)

2. well in certain classes especially core units (the number can go up to 300-400).one difference between malaysia and australia is some of the lectures there are recorded and posted online,so you download them and listen at your own convenience. that said, its not an ''incentive'' to skip class, as sometimes the lecturers write on transparencies which wont be shown in the lecture video.you never know what you will miss out

3. caulfield offers bachelor of business(accounting), clayton offers bachelor of commerce (accounting).your final cert will show bachelor of business (accounting) if you decide to take that degree.

4. dont worry too much about blending in. there are quite a lot of malaysian/singaporean (asians in general) around. since the degree is different, the material covered could be more than what is covered in sunway. no problem with understanding Australian english slang for me.

B.Comm vs. B.Bus?

Personally I heard B.Comm is harder and more to tests while B.Bus is more to hands on work (maybe like assignment?).

Which one would you recommend to an average student who can get passing/good grades but is always unable to get super great grades? For my SAM results, my assignment help to push up my grades A LOT. For extra info, I got 79.5 ATAR. Furthermore, a Monash (not Sunway) counsellor had told me that I could take the diploma (1 year) for business (either commerce or business) in Clayton. However, for me to continue in the second year of Bachelor degree (either comm/bus) I would have passed a certain (average? I don't remember what she said, sorry) mark.

It is 70 for B.Comm and 60 for B.Bus. Thus, I'm uncertain whether I should overestimate my abilities or underestimate my abilities? Which should I choose? Business or Commerce? I'm planning on majoring accounting the second year if I think can handle it after experience in first year.

Because diploma is considered a foundation after all. At least if I actually immediately started the first year in Bachelor degree, I still have a pathway into the second year. However if I fail to meet the expectation for the diploma, I might not be able to get in the Bachelor degree and have wasted my one year worth of money which is quite a lot. Should I go for diploma in Clayton or bachelor of bus/comm in Sunway? But I would still like to transfer to Caulfield/Clayton after a year in Bachelor degree because my parents really want me to be independent and get some experience.

What do you guys think? I like to hear opinions.

well monash is exam oriented.the weightage for assignment and exam is 20-40% assignment,60-80% exam

i do not know how bad/good would i perform should i choose b.comm instead

the overseas experience is good.i enjoyed it very much (not cooking and washing part haha) and luckily i didnt go over my limits. (there are things that are illegal/uncommon in malaysia,but legal/common in australia)

Hello nice peoples.

I want to know how hard would it be to get average of 70 in the first year of

1. bachelor of commerce
2. bachelor of business
3. bachelor of business and commerce

Is it usually rare for people to get those average?
Is the assignments and test for first year quite hard?
I'm the usual average student whose scores ranges in the middle of the class. Never highest and never lowest.
But since this is uni, not school or college, and uni are mostly self studies, I'm not sure about my ability to scores average of 70.
You can rate it if you can't describe it
Preferably tell me whatever comes in the mind.

I'm majoring in Finance and Economics

I got better results in my second semester than my first semester. (Slacked off during the first sem, studied last minute for finals, I'm a lazy guy )
It's not exactly rare for people to get an average of 70%. I would think about 30~40% of students get an average of 70% or above in their first year. Since you mentioned you are an average student you might have to put in a little more effort than usual to get a 70% average.
Tests are usually easier than assignments (to me at least). Just plan your time properly and you'll be fine

should be there with a digi-camera, now only to find a pc to hook it to for some wierd reason there's not net cafe's in shopping malls, i think net is quite low rate in malaysia.
spoke to some lovely women 2-3 days ago , i should be getting a soft copy of my val end of this month , and a hard copy 2 days later. was afraid if i got the original letter via snail mail i'd be screwed
on a lighter note, @ryan , i did find out that i'd have to go to the international students office and get my medical test and checkup done only after appointment, means on 17th
feb i go to monash, book an appointment , try and hopefully get a student letter for my account and get all things sorted out before orientation. Also i was informed maybank was quite a popular bank , need your thoughts on this

yeah maybank is largest bank in malaysia so you will find their ATM almost everywhere including in monash campus
oh yes, monash use dhl to courier documents to you so not to worry so much
rental in shopping malls is too expensive for net cafe to survive lol
