QUOTE(LittleBear @ Dec 2 2011, 09:20 AM) 71'c is too hot ledi bro... is it actively cooled? if nb is 71'c i wonder how hot it's gonna be for d pwm... i'd say 65'c & below still within my comfort zone, try to put a fan & nb/pwm area so that d temp can be reduced. may i know which board ur using btw? |

QUOTE(LittleBear @ Dec 2 2011, 09:32 AM) I am using Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5... It has a beefy heatsink. Gigabyte tech supports says the northbridge can withstand up to 80C without problems. ic... it's a giga there. hmmm... this is not bashin but giga has been known for havin temp detect issue on amd boards since 7xx series. did u try to put ya hand on d heatsink & check whether it's really that hot? sometimes software monitorin can t be fully trusted. use d right hand rule... Honestly, this is the most hottest NB MOBO I've ever used... if's it's scorchingly hot, then d temp readin is true, if it's just warm to touch, then u can just safely assume it's ok. of course precautionary step like gettin a fan to blow on d heatsink is good but aesthetically wise is another issue. QUOTE(LittleBear @ Dec 2 2011, 09:40 AM) Confirmed its hot... You can't stick your finger on the heatsink for more than 1 second. i think it's more of pwm fault rather than nb causin this. same with my gd80, d pwm + sb heatsink is hot to touch on load even @ stock clock. i think under heavy oc can use to fry egg liao if put a metal plate on it. sadly there's no water block for gd80, else i'd have gladly spend some $$$ on it. wc is so nice that u'll feel good (by jackin up d volt while temp still remain moderately low) w/o realizin that ur actually killin d components softly... QUOTE(LittleBear @ Dec 2 2011, 09:49 AM) Mmmm... This 990FXA UD5 board has got 8+2 power phase & the heatsink is connected to the NB via a heat pipe. Maybe that's the cause for the NB temperature to increase when the processor draws more power. nb doesn't play much role in oc nowadays. power related thingy most/all controlled by pwm. exactly, d heat is more likely generated by d pwm rather than nb. no offence but to oc with ecs low end board is not really a good choice to start with. am no expert so what i do is always follow what d expert use (ofkos of what i can afford lah). back then ta690g was a hit, so i got myself one & still happy with my choice.

actually what matter most is d board. pop a lemon chip onto a decent board, u mite still be able to squeeze some MHz outta it, pop a decent chip onto a crappy board & u get close to nothing...

QUOTE(8tvt @ Dec 28 2011, 10:48 AM) yup bro, unless ur a die hard amd fans. not much improvement still ok, but thuban/deneb pwns fx clock to clock in most tests. but still, fx are fun chips to play with... only concern is power draw & one need a mobo with strong pwm. |

QUOTE(KoYuKii @ Dec 28 2011, 11:39 AM) is asus m5a99x evo a powerful board? any1 unlocked 960t using this board? coz wanna convert to amd soon..hehehe i'd rate it @ above midrange, performed admirably while not burnin holes in ya wallet. d board is capable of core unlockin but whether d chip can be unlocked is diff story already coz it's chip dependent. |

QUOTE(howszat @ Jan 1 2012, 10:00 PM) Caution, I know it's d matter of efforts mate. i wont go to d extend of labellin reply to my inquiry as useless. at least he made an effort to reply. I prefer answers like these rather than useless replies like "your board doesn't support overclocking". If I don't have much choice in overclocking, I will look at upgrading just the CPU to Phenom II x2. I don't need multiple cores, but I want the single-threaded application I'm running to have the highest speed possible. The next step is upgrading the board, but let's see what I can do for now. w/o ram divider options there's really nothing much to play unless u have a chip w/ unlocked multipliers. with a locked chip u only left with 1 option which is to increase htt if u were to oc. look for M.I.T option if u managed to unlock d option by pressing ctrl + f1. |
