TB3 can do it - look at Arous Gaming Box. It's small and portable for it

I once saw an article in reddit using the T480s with TB3 2 lanes pcie to connect with egpu...it works fine. It can be done also with this ?

Can I use this instead? It is cheap. but the PD only deliver 18W. How much powa does my X1 i5 need? If the watage is lower than required, will it charge at all?

eGPU no need buy so high end...
higher end = bottleneck more due to TB3 bandwidth

Some of our THinkpads (like the X1C6) has 4xPCIe lanes... in a way, the MX150 is not very useful if it take up the PCIE lanes for use of eGPU through TB3

This fella uses GTX1070 as his eGPU, both through internal and external monitors and have no issues with it..

I'm not sure what's the minimum wattage to charge the X1C6.
The Aukey that I'm using is rated at 45W when I launched Lenovo Vantage to check the charging status.

As for cable, to be on the safe side, stick to PD cable that can deliver upto 3A power as some USB-C cable is designed for data transfer

45W confirm can charge , anything low it wouldn't work

In my X6E , I need to use minimum for 65W , even that it would be in throttled mode

1070 does work very well , you can pump games in high settings , of course you are not going to get 100fps , but you will get like 60-80% of it

How do I check the current power draw? Can I check it from the vantage? I am not seeing that option.

Vantage wouldn't show , it shows the charge information

Here is what I've observed with 45W charger on my X1E

1 PC will detect but it will refuse to charge , it will still run on battery. You'll get notification that power adapter is not compatible. Unlike Mac and other USB-C laptops , Our Thinkpad does not do SLOW drain. Some laptops , it will do slow drain (aka slowly drains the battery by using power + battery). For our Lenovo , its either it can top up battery or not at all

2. 65W , it can charge the battery but slowly but CPU is throttled , I am using H series , so probably there is not enough power to run at full power.

3. 85W - charges but again charges very slow

4. 100W - haven't tried. Maybe if I get eGPU - I'll test that one

ok follow up q then:

With your X1E, using 45W, can it charge while the PC is off/hibernating?

On my 65W thinkpad original charger, the laptop can be used while charging at the same time. Im assuming if I get the same 65W 3rd party charger, id experience the same thing. What is the power rating for your original X1E charger?

Yes 45W can charge up while the computer is off/hibernate (standby does not count)

Your laptop can support 45W/65W . 65W gives you Quick Charge , 45W gives you normal. So for your case 45/65 is fine. Your laptop uses U series CPU , mine uses H series which is higher power consumption + I have a 1050Ti GPU and its active , and it can kick in when the laptop thinks it needs the extra GPU power like playing games

A great laptop for a great man notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

Thanks for sharing. I will probably just stick with a 45W Ugreen charger. Only RM89. 45W Ugreen So cheap, much cheaper than comparably-rated 45W from Aukey. Both are from the so-called "lazmal", so I assume they are safe

When I charge my X1C6 with the stock charger, launch Lenovo Vantage, and on the power option it will show 65W USB-C charging or something like that.
When I change to Aukey 45W PD, Lenovo Vantage will show 45W USB-C
