Hello guys. It looks like I'll be joining UNMC in September. I have already been informed about my unconditional offer and had the registration dates emailed to me.

My main concern right now is accommodation. Since I'm a foreigner, I usually get along with other people from overseas easily. I would like to start it that way. Does anyone know where most foreigners especially Iranians, Europeans, etc stay at. Is it the on campus or off campus? Where abouts?

Thank you.

That's a strange but sweet mix smile.gif Nope, I'm from Bahrain and I'm going to do foundation in science.
*
that's cool. good to know I won't be the only middle-eastern in foundation. smile.gif

I think the best thing to do for accommodation for me is to get on-campus for a month, meet new people, and see how it goes. I wanted the housing option but I don't want to end up with people who might be annoying.

Exactly what I thought!
Did you apply for the accomodation or not yet?
My first choice was the single ensuite bathroom.
*
not yet. I'll probably do it by this upcoming week.
should probably hurry on that in case it gets filled up. lol

Yeah I want to have the single ensuite bathroom too.

I suggest you do it now lol 'cause I applied early June and no reply from the University yet. I tried calling them but it's always a bad connection.  doh.gif
*
shocking.gif
By the way, it seems quite weird how long it's been they haven't replied to you. I assume you have emailed them about it?

PS: I just emailed it.

Yeah! The thing is I applied for everything through an agent here in Bahrain. I've got everything ready (even my visa letter and if you haven't gotten yours yet I suppose you go ahead and work on that too) except for the accomodation. I hope they reply soon, I don't want to stay out on the roads lol doh.gif
*
Haha I hope not.. tongue.gif

well I'm good with that. I'm already in Malaysia and sent the visa app to them. (living in relatives house atm)
if you continue to have problems with not receiving a reply on your room and difficulties calling them, I could help since I'm already here if you want. lol

That's really nice of you, I could really use some help!  rclxm9.gif  But I have to contact my agent first  smile.gif

So have you seen the University's campus yet? If so what is it like? I only know that it's in the middle of nowhere.
*
No problem.

Yeah I have. lol yeah it really is middle of nowhere. I like the campus. Very modern looking compared to the other universities in Malaysia. It has an okay library and good sporting facilities. There's this nice running track around this mini lake/park. You see it right when you enter the university gate before the buildings. I didn't have much time to check the canteen and other things.

hey guys I just read the front page. thanks for being so helpful thus far.

I have couple questions.
I've never gotten mail by UNMC so far with all my offers being emailed to me. However I called UNMC last week to check the status of my application and they informed me I had an unconditional and I would get it by next week. Am I supposed to get this by MAIL or EMAIL?

Also same thing goes for the on campus accommodation. Will I get the offer by email or mail?

Secondly I'm curious to know if UNMC has a football team? or perhaps even intramural sports where you join teams and play for fun?

Added on August 15, 2011, 6:47 pmOHH PS I almost forgot. How's the internet connection in the on campus rooms? I heard it blocks P2P which is a bummer. how many mbps for dl? cable or wifi?

Also any USB broadband internet you guys would recommend if the on campus internet is shite?

Where the hell do you come from dude lol.
Internet in Malaysia.. the most common you get in households are usually 1Mbps...and 512 kbps of course.
Only this year I see more marketing on faster packages for households.

I believe maxis works best there, right guys?

edit: oh then get yes4g. But take note it's really not for much p2p lol, will cost you a fortune.
*
hehe. I live in Shah Alam currently with unifi 20mbps. I download many files (shows, music, etc) daily which I probably continue to do in uni and make the big downloads when I go back to parent's home biggrin.gif

But yeah I'm aware of the common slow internet in Malaysia especially in Semenyih which is middle of no where. tongue.gif

QUOTE(alexander.ch_1992 @ Aug 15 2011, 07:44 PM)
I'm using Yes4G, three bar signal out of five. Full bar in campus.
*
thanks guys. I will do some research on Yes4g and others before getting it. Digi also has a sweet deal compared to others with a decent coverage area in Semenyih.

PS: I hope there are some social events that UNMC students have with drinks involved. (good stress reliever) I remember when I asked one of UNMC officers about social events and she said "we have bowling." loool

For those Muslims who drink, it's a matter of personal choice and their connection to God.
Drinking, enjoying life, but still being a god fearing and responsible caring person. This I respect!  biggrin.gif
*
Well I don't believe in religion. Consider myself Agnostic for now. But just because of this, it doesn't mean I'm not a responsible caring person who is civilized and aware of moral values.
My parents have given me the free pass to experiment and see if I want to be associated with religion.

This is how the new generation of people are turning up to be in middle east nowadays despite of the Islamic laws especially with the likes of Iranians, Turkish, Lebanese, etc. Not everyone but majority of this young generation I'd say.

Are you Muslim or what?

Not a Muslim. Consider me similar to yourself, but more indulged into the beliefs of Buddhism/Taoism/Hinduism.

So do you eat pork? Or do you have something at the back of your mind reminding you that it's probably not such a good thing to do, though you know that it's allright. I had a non-practicing Muslim friend who was just like that haha.
*
Oh cool.

To be honest, I have had many non-muslim friends in Malaysia. Because of this, there have been times where I have had pork like in Korean bbq restaurants and such but it didn't bother me much because pork is forbidden to be eaten by Muslims because it is unclean but that was a true fact actually BUT from many centuries ago. In today's world however with the right technology and techniques to keep the meat clean, the pork is fine to be consumed by anyone.

But when I'm with Muslim friends or with my family, I try to respect their religion by refraining to eat or talk about pork.
