Anyone here in School of Comp Sci who is acquainted with Dr. Chong Siang Yew (MSc./Ph.D. admissions tutor), or knows anyone from MSc. Management of Information Technology? Just finished my BSc. (Hons) here and now thinking of going to do that course, but wanna know what I'm getting into first, since my background is not really in computing.

Foundation is 2 semesters, so about 1 year; if you pass that you should be able to apply for and progress to the relevant degree program on completion of your foundation, IIRC. Of course please select the right foundation course lah; don't go and do foundation in arts then want to jump to science degree course, not likely that's possible. So make very sure you know what degree you wanna study before you go take up the foundation course.

@BattleBoyz: Ech sorry pal. Myself I came from A levels so I didn't go through foundation courses, and was simply estimating at around 2 sems or so.

Check with admissions; they should have info. The Uni website also has info on scholarships, but I think quite a few are already closed...

Anyone know of people looking for female housemates? I'm looking around for a room off campus within TTS, preferably single room. *sigh* Why all the houseowners are renting out the entire house, troublesome....

TTS5 is quite close, walking distance to the bridge to uni. Lots of students around the area with family homes too. It's why everybody's looking for a room near campus in TTS5... convenience.

Most stealing happen because the owner is putting those stuff in a way that screams "steal me steal me". Who will put a laptop just next to a window?
*
LOL at "steal me steal me". But ya, don't put things next to an opened window. That's just begging for trouble. Besides... one good push and things will fly out of the window. No one wants a pile of textbooks landing on them right?

Still no reply from uni admin-- I hope they haven't lost my supporting documents AGAIN. If I have to send my personal statement to them 3 times, the third time I will print as hard copy and go straight to the admissions tutor for Computer Science myself... Otherwise I takut will be never ending story.

School of Psychology has quite a number of students already-- but not sure about numbers in that specific course. *sigh* Still waiting for an offer letter! Admin says should be today (my dad had to literally yell at them before we got anything >.<), but I am wondering if it's that simple....

P1 is ok around TTS 4, 5 and I think 6, and campus as well (except blue building but all the reception for wireless in there sucks anyway), TTS2 and presumably 3 is ok, but I should warn you P1 tends to drop at weird hours, D/C and then cannot get back without a reboot or worst case, next morning.

Other than p1 which service provider do u recommend?
*
I have Digi Broadband as a backup provider-- you're lucky that if you go now they have 3G speeds-- when I first signed up they only had EDGE, rather slow. I pay for Digi's old student package (3GB quota after which speeds are throttled, but unlimited usage) which is RM58, unfortunately they have now discontinued it. You might want to check out their newer promos. P1 isn't really so bad; works quite well at campus; it's just that D/C can happen at the worst times. Other than those two I have personally experienced, Maxis BB is also a popular choice. Beware oversubscription though.

@weijin and JHL: At this point, cannot wait for them already. Don't bother with email-- your emails will go unanswered because their mail system seems to be a black hole. Keep calling! Best times to call are around 10.30 AM to 11.45 AM, and around 12-1PM, and 3-4 PM onwards, from experience. Also, using a landline to call them seems to work better than calling from a cellphone-- not sure, but I have better luck getting through from my dad's office than with my handphone.

This is what happened to me:

I know they are currently relocating and things presumably will be going missing or easily mislaid, but considering the lateness of the time and how close it is to beginning of term, it is very bad if they can't answer students' urgent queries; this is not a good excuse.

This just goes to show cannot be too nice to them already even if we like to be. Must be firm with these people. Not saying you have to blow up at them, but you gotta insist on an answer already, or it will become a never ending story.

Usually if no landline is available yet they will have to do some things to the house-- and the house not being in our friend's name, he can't simply do stuff like that right? Then again it depends on the contract between him and his landlord...

Hmm, point. Though--Owner can't sue him but he could make his life difficult. So best look over the contract details first LOL.

hey guys.... the application latter says i have to have 2 reference...

is that REALY neccesary???

and i assume the referee to be the previous uni lecturer or high ranking staff since at the end it requires offcial stamp by the uni....

so im asking if its mendatory ....

cause lets say if i studied @ australia ..... how the hell am i gonna get reference?? i have to fly all the way back to australia to get it??
Yep it's mandatory; if you don't have the correct number of reference letters your application will not be processed-- I had that problem and they lost my reference letters which is why I haven't gotten the actual offer letter yet; they just confirmed yesterday I have a place for this sem. doh.gif Email your previous lecturers in Aussie for a reference, and tell them to email it to the Admissions office here, should be good enough. Mostly they want someone who knows you to tell them that you won't simply quit halfway through, or you are a good student, have real enthusiasm for the subject, or otherwise have good personality traits they want in a student.

Anyone here have experience of staying in the downstairs room in TTS 2 terrace houses, the one that's near the kitchen? How is it like?

They want someone to tell them that you won't simply quit halfway through?? can you quit halfway through and still earn your degree one ah??? the degree isn't enough proof that you've completed it??
Not all lecturers are so kind hearted and free to do these stuff especialy towards student that they could hardly remember..... i know that cause the farking lecturers are so lazy that they did not even reply my enquires during my degree years....
Another thing is, how is it possible to get sign or stamp through electronicly??
is there any other way around this reference thing?? cause its not even mandatory to fill the reference part when you are applying for jobs .... and i realy dont want to bother the lecturers...
BTW.... is it just me ... or it seems like only nottingham is the only uni wants references?
*
That, among other things. You finishing your degree is one thing; but did you see what they ask in the postgrad (at least I assume you're doing your postgrad-- or are you going for undergrad?) application forms for reference letters? Command of English, personal experience of their time with you, and yeah-- just finishing the degree apparently isn't enough for them LOL-- basically your referree has to sell you and your application to the admissions tutor; has to explain why letting you in is a good idea. Also just because you didn't quit your first degree doesn't mean you won't stay on in your second... So likely they do want to know how keen you might be in your chosen course. Some people (like me) did a first degree in one thing and now switching to another field for various reasons: the job of the admission tutor is to get those who are coming for the right reasons.

Well if you knew a couple of your lecturers very well I'd think they'd be happy to bang out a short reference for you. Doesn't have to be a novel after all.

And no, Notts is not the only uni that wants references-- if you applied through UCAS, you'll see that just about all the British unis I've heard of need references.

Monash undergrad wanted references as well IIRC. I applied there before for undergrad as well as Notts. And as for changing from one field of study to another: well-- I did my BSc in Applied Psych and Management Studies, and just got into MSc Management of Information Technology, which is rather different from my undergrad field of study. I'm pretty sure however that if my lecturers hadn't said in their references that they thought I could hack this course of study and my own enthusiasm for tech stuff, I doubt they'd have let me in even though I qualify grades wise for the course.
