Hi all -
Just to share some of my experience as some forumers have been asking what is the difference between a university education versus ACCA.... these are just my own opinion and not of anyone else.....
I am an Australian graduate with B.Com (Acctg & Finance) but do not opt to do CPA Australia. Instead, I did the ACCA.
ACCA is quite a tough nut to crack, especially P2 and P4 ~ which is widely recognised as one of the toughest papers amongst all the UK accounting professional bodies. It even topped the toughness threshold expected of the ICAEW.
Having graduated from a 2nd tier Aussie university, i actually got hammered throughout the final 5 papers for ACCA, especially for Paper P2.
What is 2nd tier university?
2nd tier university is a better way of labeling those mickey mouse, money wasting, time wasting university which is more interested in making money, printing degrees, selling degrees off the shelves than imparting quality education ----------an example is .......for final year Advanced Financial Accounting paper..... there are 5 chapters on Accounting AND CULTURE.....Accounting AND Gender...... Accounting and Nationality..... Accounting and Politics .....Accounting and RESEARCH..... what the hell is wrong with that university????? ..........and the syllabus just have 1 chapter that scantly/ briefly mention both consolidation and deferred tax.......just one chapter!!!!! whilst P2 got 8 chapters........ and mind you it is a final year Advanced Accounting Paper........
Lesson to impart here --------->
Be careful when enrolling in Australian Universities.... some of them (NOT ALL OF THEM as there are some good Aussie universities......) is just a front for selling PRs to HongKies/ or anyone who wanna jump boat to Aussieland but in need of the extra points to qualify for migration.........some of the campuses is so full of asean until you felt you are somewhere in Hong Kong/ Jakarta / Manila/ Shanghai...... instead of Australia.......and the HongKies just do not want to speak English...... oh well, the only English word they utter is of the F word.... (profanities)..... even then, their thick cantonese accent make it so funny..... and the university prefers to hire cheaper asean lecturers instead of locals ..... sighhhhh............
On top of wasting mum and dad's hard earn money, you will definitely suffer in the first few years of your career ........because your peers who are from the ACCA route has indirectly kick your butt during each performance appraisals.... what to do arrr? bosses like to compare you with your other peers before cutting the cake......
in the BIG 4, if your performance appraisal sucks relative to your peers and if it happens way too often,. you will be shown the door or rather you will walk through the door yourself...... your employer is not interested or do not give a shit about accounting and CULTURE but is more interested in whether the damn balance sheet that you have just drafted ties ......... or whether you can spot errors in an otherwise seemingly clean account......
Back to the topic, ACCA P2 got none of these crap like accounting and CULTURE..... but just pure and hardcore
technical stuff, things that I find very useful and relevant in my job as an accountant..... doing ACCA it is worth all the sacrifice....... because ACCA delivers a rock solid knowledge base that is extremely relevant to my work..... and it fills up the knowledge gap left by an irresponsible university ........
and i actually suffer during the first few years of my career due to graduating from a dumb ass university.......For this, I am proud for choosing the harder route of doing ACCA.
If you still want a university education, please please please please...... i cannot emphasis this enough......go for the good ones..... like University of Melbourne, University of New South Wales, Australian National university, Macquarie University.... those universities where the cut off point for your Pre-U is pretty high to gain admittance for your course..........and importantly, make sure a huge portion of the student population is made up of local white Australians...... why? because the locals know the real deal.............
Even then, if you ask any university graduates to do P2 and P4, i bet they will find it extremely challenging......
Thank you for sharing. Its very informative to understand the issues more clearly but can i ask you a couple of questions ie
1. In order to migrate and work in Australia, is having ACCA qualification enough or one has to do CPA Australia too?
2. Have you heard of Deakin University as i heard one can study tax and audit here and sit for exams?
