got two,
the first one doesn't support screw mount AF if not wrong.
the price gap quite big iirc, 2nd hand LA-EA1 i saw RM499 while LA-EA2 is RM1k

if you are a beginner and dont know what lens to buy, stick with your 18-55mm, it is more than enough

A good beginner A-Mount lens would be the nifty 50, as usual. Cheap as hell (RM300 used, RM500 new) and good introduction for a portrait prime. The other "Easy Choice" primes, as Sony calls it, are great as well: 35/1.8, 85/2.8. 35mm goes for RM690~RM850, while the 85mm is RM800~RM999.

Do note that you will not have image stabilization (Optical Steady Shot) while using the A-Mount adapter, unless the lens itself has it (Only SIGMA lenses have OS for Sony so far).

But like 0168257061 says, stick with the 1855 until you've fully conquered it. It's a great kit. Only reason to go for other lenses? You need faster glass, or longer glass.

Yes, the LA-EA1 and LA-EA2 adapters will fit all E-mount cameras (NEX series, VG series, and FS series)

Sigma to release Digital Neo (DN) line for NEX, which will first include the 30mm F2.8 EX DN and the 19mm F2.8 EX DN. The 19mm will be 28.5mm equivalent on the Nex, 30mm equivalent to 45mm .

Those are slot-in square filters. Normally used with an adapted holder that screws onto the front of the lens. You can use up to 3 filters at  one time. The cheap knock-off brand would be Tian-Ya. Sells for about RM100~180, for the Filter Holder, Screw adapter, and 3pcs of filters. Depending on which filters you pick up, the price will be different. Better one would be Cokin, but they're quite hard to find nowadays, and way more expensive. About RM50~100 per filter.

The ND filters for the Tian-Ya is not a pure grey, and will have a purplish / magenta color cast.

Main advantage of the NEX series are the interchangeable lenses, and the quality and low-light ability that comes from the APS-C large sensor.

However, since your parents will be using it, do you think they will swap lenses around often? If not, they will only be limited to either the SEL1855 zoom, or the SEL16F28 pancake. Since size is an issue, I will not talk about the SEL18200. If they are not swapping lenses, they will only ever use one lens, and if so, please consider a super zoom instead.

With a prosumer super zoom, you can easily get 28~600mm+ depending on which model you go for, which will be really convenient. Super zooms nowadays are not that large, and heavy, as compared to DSLRs. If you were to pack the SEL18200 with the NEX, it would be much larger length wise.

In short:

NEX
===
+ Quality
+ Low Light
+ Interchangeable Lenses
- Lens /Sensor Maintenance Required
- Learning Curve, ease of use
- Lack of pancake / collapsible zoom
- Longest telephoto zoom is only 300mm (35mm equiv.)

Super Zoom
+ Long zoom (up to 720mm [35mm equiv.])
+ Compact size with telephoto zoom
+ Easy to use
- Fixed Lens

Thanks for breaking down the information for me. Does the 16mm f2.8 pancake prime has shallow dof compare with, let say the A mount 50mm? Worth getting it along with the 18-55mm? Main reason I ask is because I dont think they prefer 18-200mm due to small aperture for longer range.

Mind sharing how much you guys got your NEX-5n with 1855 and 16f28? Any freebies?

Very vague graph. Looking forward to the X-Pro 1, but this is just trolling from Fuji to place it all the way up there (Fuji - "LOL! f*** you guys! Some people will believe this graph means everything!") Style points are also very subjective... some people like the retro look, some like the new-age look.

Wouldn't a retro look be more conservative?

No, the SEL16F28 will not produce as much shallow depth of field as the 50/1.8DT, due to lens design constraints.

From what you are saying, it seems like your parents are looking for a large aperture lens that produces shallow depth of field. If that is the case, the SEL50F18 would be a good choice if you can wait for it (estimated March for Malaysia, other Asian countries have it already). Native E-mount, fast 1.8, good bokeh quality. A lot of samples are floating around the net already and it won't take you too long to find them.

If you can't, your choices for fast lenses will be limited to either the A-mount lenses with adapter, or legacy lenses using manual focus. If you want to play it safe, LA-EA2 + A-Mount lenses would be the way to go. Legacy lenses is a hornets nest you're better off not stepping into.

Current prices for NEX-5ND ranges from RM2500~2700. Standard freebies depending on shop: cam bag, cheap tripod, screen protector, class 4 mem card.

Hi all,

Would it be any negative impact to camera or image quality on NEX 5N if enable lens compensation in the setting? By default the setting is off.

Please advise.

Thanks

Lens Compensation does fantastic stuff if you are shooting in JPG. It corrects for CA and Distortion. Leave it on, you'll be fine. The settings do not apply if you are shooting in RAW.

Out of focus, especially the second one with the bee. Manual focus very critical here...
