QUOTE(zstan @ Jul 10 2011, 10:32 PM) RM20 blower kit + cotton buds and cleaning cloth from Selangor Photo @ Pertama Complex KL, near sogo.By the way, I just registered for the 17th July "Basic Photography Workshop for Sony Alpha". 24th there is a shooting trip to Taiping, but I feel intimidated not to join with just Nex and Kit/canon lens, when others have big black dslrs with all sorts of extensions and equipment. Anyone here planning to go? |

Am glad I attended the Basic Alpha course today at Sony Center @ the Curve. Michael Chee was the instructor and it feels that he generously shared his tips and experiences with us. What we learned were practical and applicable. I came in to class with a NEX,
Overall, recommended to attend as the concepts are the same, but you might want to choose the NEX specific classes. This post has been edited by nlik: Jul 17 2011, 10:23 PM |

QUOTE(rx330 @ Jul 23 2011, 01:47 PM) dun understand y the nex 5 needs a seperate button for on n off, y kenot share with the shutter release button? When I was in a country with below 10 degrees temperature and having thick gloves on, was thankful that the NEX-5 power switch can be flicked on. However, I had issues trying to press the 2 other flat softkey buttons . Imagine if the power switch was a tiny recessed button, then nobody in countries with winter seasons would buy it, because they won't be able to switch it on wearing gloves. Here's a picture from that country, taken with the Nex Kitlens This post has been edited by nlik: Jul 23 2011, 11:22 PM Attached thumbnail(s) |

Not sure, but from the online pics, I think should be no problems turning on the 3's with gloves. It's the 3 soft buttons that give trouble. |

QUOTE(idoblu @ Aug 13 2011, 11:16 AM) 3. this is my biggest complain. it doesnt show what ISO the Auto ISO has chosen IS that a valid complaint? Basically Nex only decides the ISO at the moment it starts to capture the image, so logically it can't tell you exactly, until itself has decided what ISO value to use. maybe at that moment, if the subject is suddenly moves then probably it will instantly turn up the iso value.4. goto Camera menu and select Autofocus Mode to Single Shot AF not Continuos AF QUOTE(firefly3x @ Aug 13 2011, 11:36 AM) It's simple, if you don't want autofocus, then just select MF Manualfocus on the AF/MF Select option. I recommend turning on the peaking color as it helps me alot. Of course once you select AF Autofocus the camera will always try to autofocus on the subjects. The difference on the Autofocus mode is this: - With Single shot AF (AF-S), it will lock focus once you 1/2 press the shutter button. The focus will remain in that area as long as you keep your fingers still 1/2 pressing the shutter button; even if you move the object around. - With Continuous AF (AF-C), it will assume you are trying to focus on a moving object. So With the 1/2 press of the shutter button, it will always try to keep the moving object in focus. Like if you try to wave a pencil infront of the camera, then you can see how NEX is able to move the focus to follow your pencil. It would be more confusing if you select autofocus and it doesn't.. autofocus. This post has been edited by nlik: Aug 14 2011, 12:56 AM |

QUOTE(firefly3x @ Aug 14 2011, 03:01 AM) Thanks for the replies. I understand what a half press means, and the differences between AF-S and AF-C. As I said, I myself have been using dSLRs for the past 7 years. Yea.. i probably get what you mean, it's like noo... don't go autofocusing when i don't want it to, the extra movements may wear out the internal parts faster. Go autofocus only when i press the shutter. Some will be irked and others are indifferent depending on the individual expectations. Maybe Sony can put in a 2 more option in the next Firmware AF-M and an AF-A? haha .. start autofocus only when 1/2 press. My thing is, the AF still focus eventhough I didnt half press. Well, like Sniper said, its because of the Contrast Detection AutoFocus thingy in the NEX and PnS cameras. So I'll take it this way and I learnt something new this way too. Once in a while this seems to be helpful because it cuts down the waiting time for the cam to focus. Perhaps by the time I lift up the cam and 1/2 press the shutter, something in the scene already changed and the shot was lost. Compared to let's say.. by the time i lift up the cam, it has already somewhat intelligently focused and I get the shot especially for some candid moment which i experienced before. As for the Battery, I usually carry a spare. |

QUOTE(eugenechiuu @ Aug 15 2011, 05:32 PM) I was also thinking about the same question. Especially when on Saturday I tested the Nikkor 50MM f1.8, thoroughly thinking if i wanted it or not. With the NEX-Nikon adapter +Nikkor 50mm (75mm equivalent), the length of that combination is if i remember correctly, was slightly longer than the kitlens.Anyway, NEX 5 and A33 supposedly shares the same 14.2mpx sensor. But Flange on Wiki tells that e-mount flange distance is 18mm, a-mount is 44.50mm. I don't know how to do the optics calculations but I suspect that since they are using the same sized sensor, the optical distance to focus probably is the same? Which is why the lenses have to be longer to fill up/make up for the difference. Maybe someone here who knows Physics can draw some diagrams |X| to calculate?? Back to the Nikon adaptor, it's wishful thinking if it can be just 8mm thick, but then again i guess.... never. |

Took the plunge today.. got the Nikkor 35mm f1.8. Mount it on the NEX-5 with a Coyo Adapter.
Hmm..using this, i actually don't miss the Zoom at all, since 35mm is actually 52.5mm already. Overall in low light, it's brighter so I was able to use faster shutter than the kit. About this COyo adapter, it's frankly slightly loose on the contact with the Nikkor lens and i am thinking to bring this adapter back to the shop, see if other stocks can fit better. However,It's a perfect fit to the body e-mount . Aperture can be controlled, but it is 'smooth' and continuous. err.. no step by step jump as you would get with the other lenses. There is no Aperture window on the lens either, so won't be able to tell exactly the aperture used. So far the images are good, some even sharper than the kit. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « This post has been edited by nlik: Sep 13 2011, 12:02 AM |

Sample shot from the 35mm 1.8
This eerie looking pic (what do the words say!!??) , taken handheld iso1600@1/30, crazily clean where the post processing was just to resize. Size Comparison with Kit Lens QUOTE(0168257061 @ Sep 13 2011, 12:35 PM) Rm 190 for this CoYo brand. From YL photo , Pudu plaza. Today I went again to change the adapter because the contact between lens and adapter was loose. The guy at the shop tried another different Nikon lens and it was still loose. So please avoid this CoYo brand for now, otherwise MUST ask the shop mount a lens on the adapter for you to test the fit. If you happen to get a perfect fit then ok lor. QUOTE(KittyKat @ Sep 13 2011, 01:00 PM) QUOTE(KittyKat @ Sep 13 2011, 04:03 PM) Yes to histogram. Hmm... in M mode, the screen shows 1/15 F-- m.m +0.3 . So I can change the shutter speed, and the m.m automatically moves from -2.0 to 0 to 2.0 depending whether I point the camera to a dark or bright area.QUOTE(shinchan^^ @ Sep 13 2011, 04:16 PM) Yes, control the actual aperture in the Lens, it's not the Kipon proprietary aperture blades.Just on the right of the glass, there is lever than can move up and down that controls the aperture blades. The adapter has a simple tiny rod inside that moves this lever. ![]() img source: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/images1/35mm-f14/DSC_9218-rear.jpg This post has been edited by nlik: Sep 14 2011, 01:24 AM |

I kinda view it differently, as I am stepping up from a compact TZ3. So from this upgrade perspective, the NEX makes sense as a worthy upgrade (tilting screen, 14.2 APS-C Exmor dslr sensor, ability to change lenses, manual controls). The ability to fit other lenses was considered a bonus feature to me. My dad has a 20 yr old Canon 35-80mm MKII and I was estatic to be able to clean it up and mount it on my Nex. It now double as a Macro lens as well with the front element removed.
Image and outlook wise, I feel un-comfortable carrying a big black dslr everywhere. It irks me when people hang the black dslr around their necks without the lens cap on, and stroll around in shopping malls. Groups of people I take photo's of seems to feel more comfortable around the Nex, which means i can get closer up. They also won't mind helping to take pictures with it as when i pass them the Nex; even my mum helps with the family photos when needed. But give these non photographers a Dslr and they go Err.. giving u an unsure look. If it can give me the same great picture results in normal situations, why would I want to carry a heavier and large set instead? From a technical perspective, the facts and figures were already shared by the other forummers here, and are transparent to everyone like on the dpreview website. QUOTE(d@odao @ Sep 30 2011, 10:01 PM) No. some lenses have a M/A, M, A/F switch so I put mine to M and manual focus all the way with the help of Focus Peaking.QUOTE(mickychunnie @ Oct 1 2011, 01:18 AM) hi i've been using nex3 for almost a year...i own the 16mm lens and i getting bored with it..anyone can recommend any better lens? 50mm? with adapter? and also is 50mm consider as zoom lens? i wan some lens that is great for fashion photography shooting.. 50mm will actually become 75mm which is 50x1.5. I currently mount a 35mm nikkor on the Nex and it works as a 52mm normal lens. You can't zoom, so need take a few steps back or forward. by the way.. I solved the loose adapter by sticking a screwdriver into the gaps and widening it.. Now its pretty tight This post has been edited by nlik: Oct 1 2011, 04:34 PM |

QUOTE(mickychunnie @ Oct 1 2011, 08:45 PM) thanks for all the advices Fashion as in Runway shots? I read that they generally use long range zoom lens for that kinda job. Cause the models will pose right after stepping out on stage before her walk, but photographers are on a platform that is at the other end of the runway. When the models reach the end of the runway and are posing again, then need to zoom out. Here's a close up of Miku using canon EF 35-80 mkII on my Nex. Only changed the Hue to get this green tint.
