News update from Thailand:
Some Thailand TV broadcasters are struggling to survive on offering some digital TV channels due to consumer trend of Internet video and OTT platforms. Total of 7 digital TV channels will cease broadcast on 1 Oct 2019, reducing the current 22 to 15 digital TV channels.

Seems that TV3 analogue TV channel in Langkawi island has a squeeze-back reminder, to inform viewers that analogue broadcast will cease on 21 July, urging viewers to switch to myFreeview.

This squeeze back, which makes the picture of the TV channel to become smaller, is the same thing as what Singapore Mediacorp did prior to their analogue switch off.

I'm not sure if this squeeze back message on is only visible to Langkawi's analogue TV viewers, or nationwide at all or times or certain times only...
Anyone here can receive analogue TV signals from Langkawi tower, do share with us some screenshots on other or all analogue TV channels if possible.

When the channels get sorted out, the Group K antenna will be best, channels 21 through 48
Grouped antennas have better gain than a wideband 21-69

Wow... We have antenna expert here. I'll come and ask you if I have questions about the technical stuff on UHF antennas biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
Malaysia got sell Group K type of UHF antenna? I can't find it on online shopping sites.

Hmmm....somehow I don't trust my openbox v8 pro decoder readings, see for yourself, frequency 650mhz;

Both DIY Yagi and Thaisat 5E are showing signal strength 95% and signal quality 85%  shakehead.gif Can't be trusted
Feeling skeptical  hmm.gif  .....I took my laptop and take readings via progdvb and Astrometa USB, *Both mounted at same pole, took off the antenna and remount at exact position, with the strongest reading being snapshot*:

Those China receivers usually like that one. It doesn't show the correct signal reading values.

Btw, where did you buy the USB DVB-T2 tuner? How much did you buy it? I'm thinking of getting one as well.

And also, not directly related, does anyone know where to buy a USB dongle that can receive DAB+ and DRM+ (including DRM30) digital radio?
I know Malaysia don't have those digital radio services officially, but I want to do more research on it by getting one if possible.

If have, share the links here. Thanks.

That was many years ago, I can't recall where I bought it online. I know I asked my sister to buy it for me using her account lelong last time  laugh.gif
I think the price was RM 80 plus something. Should be cheaper by now?

Unfortunately, this one doesn't have DRM+ by default....although in theory it can support DRM+ via SDR (software defined radio)  brows.gif , but I can't test it because there isn't any DRM+ broadcast around. Never tested DAB either.

Here a high resolution picture of my Astrometa USB stick.

RM80+? Wah, looks like quite expensive blink.gif
The SDR, is it like you use a computer software to make it receive and play DRM+ or DRM30 broadcasts?

Well, according to this website, DAB+ has been on trial since many years ago.
https://www.worlddab.org/countries/malaysia...rrent_situation
Yet, you don't see it announce it publicly. Who knows, if anyone has DAB+ radio, can receive it?
If DAB+ trials go unannounced, who knows they've started DRM+ test trials signals without public knowing it? Just my two cents biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Maybe that time the haven't start digital TV broadcast yet? Brunei already shut down their analogue TV, and they've gone fully digital.

Woahhhhh.... That price tag is way expensive than I expected... I thought it's quite affordable to buy, even if it's from other countries.

DAB is not going to happen in Malaysia.
Most radio listening is done in the car while commuting and the advertisers know that.
*

Well yea... I also think that the adoption rate is not going anywhere... But since Malaysia is having trials on that, I'll try it out if I got the chance, provided I don't have to break my bank to buy too expensive (to me) equipment to receive it.

And it's on 200MHz+, so in terms of coverage and wall penetration, it's gonna be a difference compared to FM radio reception.

I'm also interested to see if Malaysia would try out DRM+ radio, especially if they try it on 47-68MHz band I. The coverage wise is expected to be better than standard 87.5-108MHz. Similar like digital TV, if they transmit at lower UHF frequency range (example <600MHz), coverage and indoor reception would be better than higher UHF frequencies >600MHz.

For hobby purposes, I wonder if there's any foreign DRM30 stations that transmits in shortwave, mediumwave (AM radio), or longwave, that can be received in Malaysia via DRM30.

Sorry. Off topic lol.....

Question for sifus

Does myFreeview allow recording of their OTA stream?

I am using an LG OLED65E6, so I receive the DVB-T2 signal directly on my TV without a set top box.

The feature has recording capability via the USB 3.0 ports, but to date I have not been able to do so. I have tested with FAT32 and exFAT formatted disks, to no luck.

So I am wondering if it's a limitation on myFreeview or I am doing something wrong...
*

Recording capability depends on the TV itself, not myFreeview.
As long it is any digital TV channels that is FTA (free to air) and no encryption, you can record it.

If you can't record it on your TV, perhaps you can try on those 3rd party digital TV DVB-T2 box that support recording.

Meanwhile for MYTV boxes, they've disabled the recording feature by default. It seems that they don't allow users to record it, even though it can be recorded by using 3rd party digital TV boxes.

Current DTT frequencies available in Johor Bahru, Singapore and Batam.
user posted image
*as of 25 July 2019

When Malaysia utilises 700MHz for mobile use in another few more years, any Malaysian DTT channels frequencies from 698MHz have to be relocated to other frequencies, and viewers who uses IDTV (TV that has built in DVB-T2 digital TV tuner) or non-MYTV digital TV set-top-box would have to retune their sets by perform "Auto Scan" (in layman terms) again once the frequencies is being relocated.

Singapore is going to have to release some of their spectrum, they don't need the gap channels for a start with digital.
A trade off to get to use the 700MHz block
*

Singapore won't have issue on that, cuz Singapore don't use over 700MHz frequency range for TV broadcasting.
But Malaysia and Indonesia does use over 700MHz on analogue TV channels.

Since Batam transmit 2 new DTT mux, it causes way more cross-border TV signal interference than ever before.

The best solution is not just Malaysia to shut down analogue TV, but Indonesia too, at least start from Batam.
But I can see that those Indonesian digital TV channels are the same as their analogue channels that affects some Malaysian channels as well.
Could that mean, Batam may begin with switching off those analogue channels that is affecting Malaysia first, before their nationwide switch off? hmm.gif

TV1 SD and TV2 SD had been removed from MYTV MUX 1.

Also, on the Mediacorp 570MHz MUX, "okto (HD)" has been relabeled as "Test" and is showing a variant of PM5544 testcard.
*

I thought okto HD was replaced to Channel U HD, after it moves from 586MHz?

So 570MHz has 3 HD channels now? Channel NewsAsia HD, Channel U HD, and Test?

Can screenshot the test card, wanna have a look...

Yup Okto was indeed swapped places with Channel U after its closure. However, Mediacorp did not remove the channel long after its closure and instead swapped with test card and relabeled it as "Test", likely for future purpose.

The test card on the "Test" channel look like this :

The "Test" channel is in SD or HD? It has test card tone too?
The test card is shown 24/7, right?

Malaysia's analogue switch off will be done by October 2019 anyway. So what if it's 1 month ahead of schedule?
Or maybe, that 1 Sept 2019 is ASO being carried out in certain parts of Malaysia...? Similar like Langkawi is the first place to have ASO in Malaysia.

Right now I just hope all Malaysia analogue stations to put the "squeeze back" message nationwide, similar like Langkawi one.
user posted image
Seriously, they shouldn't wait until the last few weeks before ASO, then only notify viewers like this, even if the excuse is not many viewers is watching on analogue TV today.

Government to conduct "pilot test" on analogue switch off in these states

DateRegionStates
21 July 2019 Langkawi Langkawi
19 August 2019 Central + South Klang Valley, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor
2 September 2019 Northern Penang, Kedah, Perlis
17 September 2019 Eastern Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang
30 September 2019 East Malaysia Sabah and Sarawak

The "pilot test" is basically, the actual date of ASO in the region sweat.gif
Just say Analogue Switch Off lah, why use pilot test/test run all those terms? shakehead.gif

It seems to me that because they know that not many analogue TV viewers out there, so they rather do it like this. Because, when viewers who not fully aware of ASO is about, and suddenly can't receive analogue TV signal, automatically they will make noise somewhere. And that is only when MYTV must step out to educate them how to receive digital TV.

Considering the fact that many Malaysians don't bother about analogue TV anymore, this move is somehow smart and might save some costs especially in promoting and advertising part. And, for those who are not aware of what analogue TV or digital TV is about, they might as well don't need to know about it because either they're already consuming online contents and OTT services or watch on Astro/Njoi as their primary source of entertainment and news, and also very very likely that they are not interested to know what digital TV is about. I'm not saying no one will watch Malaysian digital TV, but it is assumable that not many Malaysians will even bother and care about it, considering the majority of Malaysian consumer behaviour.

For instance, try compare how Singapore carry out ASO. They would encourage viewers that they can also watch Mediacorp shows on Toggle across their devices, including Chromecast. You don't see MYTV themselves to encourage Malaysians to use Tonton or RTM Mobile or any other streaming platforms, yet they "recommend" the primary option to buy their set-top-box to you, and they don't put too much emphasis that viewers can receive digital TV directly from their TV set that has built-in digital TV DVB-T2 tuner. I believe you know why they do that.

It's good that government finally announced the confirmed date of ASO. I really hope they really turn it off without any delay, and no U-turn on ASO dates.
