[This proposal was originally directed to DiGi prepaid.]
My suggestion is that Malaysian telcos abolish prepaid validity periods, meaning customers can use their services so long as they are in credit. Such systems already exist in other countries such as UK. It does not mean you can keep your number forever and never use it. There would need to be a minimum use or top up requirement, otherwise line will be terminated as usual. Promotions and subscriptions will still have expiry date.
There are several advantages to this for the users:
1 Convenience, use when you need to, no more line barring even you're in credit. This becomes a true pay-as-you-go system.
2 Lower income users benefit, as they spend less credit but currently have top up regularly to keep line active.
3 Complications such as subscribing to an internet weekly pass today yet having your service cut off say 2 days later due to validity expiry even you already paid for a week of internet will disappear.
4 Overall, telcos have been scared of this kind of offering will affect their revenue. I do not think the concern is well founded, which seems to be confirmed by the success of U Mobile's prepaid plan with 3 x the validity of other telcos. On the other hand, the lower income user will have the line barred and cannot use their credit unless they top up. These poorer users are deprived the service and will not reload until they have to or can afford to.
5 This is a chance for the telcos to offer something better, simpler and more convenient to their prepaid customers and a step forward in modernizing the communication system in Malaysia.

I think Telenor no longer control Digi management. Digi problem start after got 3G license jv with time dot com. The old digi is gone. Digi today is new digi under new management.

one thing DiGi needs to do with its prepaid offerings is to simplify things. there are two easy ways to start that
1. abolish credit expiry (see start of this topic) for majority of plans
2. stop this darn auto renewal of subscriptions, so we users can get back in control of our account and spending

A 3G spectrum for Digi was a strategic move. If digi does not have 3G, do you think they can compete with maxis and celcom today?

I'm not a Digi fanboy or the sort, I'm just curious about the real numbers. Couldn't find any statistics online either.

latest :
Maxis = 14.1m
Celcom = 11.3
DiGi = 8.8m
the same source show DiGi 7.9m for 2010
however, subscriber numbers are not that meaningful, it is how much they spend that counts.

for maxis i think only 11m+ active subscriber... under new calculation of subscriber that spend money in last 50days!..
mean 14m registered only 11m active.
i read it in the sun newspaper last week i think

that's why the numbers are not so meaningful, as they just mean sim cards recorded on the system, including those currently barred, being kept in people's wallet or even thrown in the bin already.
if DiGi removed validity expiry, the active line would go up as anyone in credit could spend it.. that's why i feel, such move would encourage usage and spend..
